Hey guys, I haven’t seen anyone talk about this here, but at the Annecy film festival it was announced that there will be a Thundercats animated movie coming from Warner Bros animation. It wasn’t announced who was directing, any cast, or if this is the same thing as the Adam Wingard film. But we’ll probably get updates eventually.
Very encouraging news, though a long way off and we’ve heard news of a ThunderCats movie coming for 18 years and still no dice. Not holding my breath but it’s a step in the right direction.

I, as much as any fan, would Love to have more ThunderCats and I hope beyond hope that they pursue a classic ThunderCats animated movie with the original cast. But at this point I have to acknowledge the facts of the matter.
A few social media ‘news’ outlets were over-hyping it and claiming that there was an official announcement that WB was going to make a new ThunderCats movie. That, in fact, is not what happened at all.
The president of Warner Brothers Animation played a reel at the Annecy film convention which contained clips showing several of their IP’s. One of the clips was the intro to the 1985 ThunderCats cartoon. He did not say ‘we are making a new ThunderCats animated movie or show’. He did not say anything at all about ThunderCats. No official announcement was made.
The only thing we know for certain is that WB owns the rights to ThunderCats and that it may be on their radar as a future project.
It’s definitely not the Wingard live action film, since it was Warner Brothers Animation who played the reel. And as to that, Wingard only said ‘I would like to make a ThunderCats movie’. He never said he was officially hired to work on one.

Why not make our own?
Yeas ago (decades?), I wrote to Conan Properties to ask about producing a computer-animated series of movies about the eponymous barbarian. I was told that it was considered to be “animation”, and the rights for it were elsewhere reserved. Though, in the interim I have focused on other projects, this dream of making source-accurate films remained simmering on the back burner. I watched as digital effects took over the industry, yet the techniques remained out of reach for someone of my budget and limited skill. Then, in just a few short years, A.I. changed everything.
I’m neither an enthusiast nor an opponent of A.I., yet I can see how it is quickly evening the playing field, allowing for the layman to bring to screen whatever he can envision. Would you like a ThunderCats film that looks like the '80s cartoon? No problem! How about a TV series with the ThunderCats as opossums? Just as doable!
At the cutting edge, A.I. technology has already surpassed traditional CGI; plus, it advances so rapidly that new methods trickle down almost immediately. The conceptual “drift” that has plagued A.I.-generated visuals is nearly absent in high-end productions, and it’s possible to use storyboarding with inexpensive game models to keep A.I. on the right track otherwise.
As of this writing, the cost for a rough-cut of the Conan short story “The Frost-giant’s Daughter” is in the low thousands of dollars, and the horsepower for A.I. to render the visuals over it is but a fraction on top of that. Also, many assets can be re-used for future projects.
Imagine, a top-notch ThunderCats sort film for under five grand, today! Is there anybody on here with business credentials who can set up a fundraiser to get something like this going?
