The Bionic Woman Coming to DVD

Entertainment Weekly has learned that Universal will release the first season of “The Bionic Woman” on DVD in October.

“The Bionic Woman,” which starred Lindsay Wagner, Richard Anderson and Martin E. Brooks, was a spin-off of “The Six Million Dollar Man,” which is also coming to DVD soon. Creator Kenneth Johnson announced on his website that he will be recording commentary for both of his “Ghosthunter” and “Doomsday is Tomorrow” episodes

In the series, Wagner played Jaime Sommers, a tennis professional who was nearly killed in a skydiving accident, and was rebuilt by Oscar Goldman (Anderson) and Dr. Rudy Wells (Brooks), who had also rebuilt The Six Million Dollar Man. As the result of her surgical implantation, Jaime Sommers had amplified hearing, a greatly strengthened right arm, and enhanced legs, enabling her to run faster than a speeding car.

The series ran on ABC for two seasons, from 1976 to 1977, and then it was picked-up for one season by NBC.

Universal Studios announces the release date and cost of the 1st Season of “The Bionic Woman”.

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has just announced that “The Bionic Woman”- Season 1 starring Lindsay Wagner and Richard Anderson will be available to own on October 19. It’s priced at $39.98 SRP. Package art isn’t ready yet nor have a list of extras been included with this morning’s announcement. However, we know bonus material has been recorded as we reported back in April, show creator/producer/writer Kenneth Jonhnson has recorded a commentary track for the first season’s final episode “The Ghosthunter” (as well as recording a commentary for a second season two part episode, but a release date for that se hasn’t been announced yet).

Again, the information is early and we’re going to try to find out more about this for you. But of immediate concern to use is the specs! The show was originally broadcast in 1:33 “full screen” video format, but Universal’s announcement this morning describes a DVD release with a video aspect ratio of “Anamorphic Widescreen (1:78:1)”. If this is true, then it could mean that the original image was cropped, top and bottom, in order to better fit modern television screens. We sincerely hope that Universal didn’t make the mistake of cutting away portions of the image for any reason! This studio releases classic television all the time in the original broadcast aspect ratio of the program, so we hope that this is more likely to a typo than anything else. We promise, we’ll look into it as soon as possible!

Other specs currently seen in the announcement into show an audio track of English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround and subtitles in English SDH. This Comes on 4 single-sides DVDs and while we have no picture of the packaging yet, we do have the description of it as “Slim Snap Cases with (an) Outer Box”. That’s all we have for you at the moment, but stay tuned for updates. And stay tuned for “The Six Million Dollar Man” DVD info from Time-Life, we’ve been given hints to expect that announcement very soon
