I just signed up for a test account on my brother’s recommendation. This thing is very very cool and has some incredible possibilities for the site I think.
One of the neatest features is the ability to add website content effortlessly through your own wave account, which works kind of like an incredible e-mail / collaboration interface.
Manny, have you tried this thing out? I think we should give this a whirl.
I have 8 invitations that I can send out to those interested. Let me know, I think this thing has the potential to kick facebook’s ass.
I have a Google wave account.. So don’t waste an invite on me. Not had chance to play with it yet.. But from everything I have read.. It’s going to be awesome!
I must admit that prior to this thread I had no idea what Google Wave was, and to be honest I’m still not certain - can you hit me with some informative links, Mark?
I would say that I’m always eager to check out any new web developments, so yes please to an invite!
As a side note, Google look to be taking over the Internet as we know it at the moment - as well as being the world’s biggest search engine, Google Chrome has now kicked Safari into 4th place in the battle of the web browsers (behind only IE and Firefox), and didn’t I read that Google were even launching their own computer operating system as a third alternative to Windows or Mac?
Hey Mark, I’ve just been checking out some info about Google Wave online, including the link you just posted up - I must admit I’ve yet to watch the long YouTube video (I guess being Google means that YouTube will let you post up videos that are 80 mins long! ;)), but everything I’ve seen thus far makes this thing look AMAZING to me!
I can definitely see a huge variety of ways that Google Wave could, at the very least, allow us to collaborate more quickly and efficiently as a team on the future development of the site, cutting to the quick and allowing each other to have a direct and valuable input into each other’s work, taking collaboration to the next level. Whilst in the early days of the site this could have thrown up some issues, I think now we’re all comfortable and happy enough with ourselves and our roles in the site, and respectful enough of each other in that regard too, that this could only be a time-saving tool that would enhance the overall quality of the site and really build on the “teamwork” element that has made our team work together so successfully in the past.
All of which is a long-winded way of saying - whoo-hoo, this thing looks awesome!
Did Google Wave ever take off? I must admit I’ve been so busy this year I’ve taken my eye off the ball regarding stuff like this…
I know that Mark, MannyF & I had a play around with it but could never figure out how it was supposed to work - did you guys ever get anywhere with it?
I think most everyone who saw the demo thought… wow this could be cool, then when they played with it they wondered how it can actually work and be used and when they couldn’t figure it out they all gave up on it.
So despite it being pretty cool it only becomes VERY cool if a team of people all get on it, which we never did and because it hasn’t really proven where it can be of help I think we all just left it alone.
I do wonder if it’d help us with the site redesign for collaborating with Manny on files, or if it’d be good for team meetings… Manny may be able to comment on that.
So it looks like Google has stopped developing Wave and probably for good reason, because even a cross-country team like us couldn’t find a reason or a way to properly use it despite it looking so cool.
I think the harsh reality of Google Wave is that it didn’t really achieve anything that a well-organised message board like our team forum couldn’t already achieve - I couldn’t get my hand round the new concepts and terminology. Not surprised to see it fall by the wayside TBH…
