thought it was strange that there wasnt a talkback thread yet here on this forum about superman returns which opens this wkend. are people not interested in the man of steel’s new movie or have you just not had the chance to check it out yet? for those of you who have seen it, what did you think?
as for me, i checked it out yesterday and really liked what i saw. im more of a batman fan, than a superman fan, but this was still a great movie. i felt brandon routh did a great job of filling christopher reeve’s boots and the other actors played their parts wuite well, kevin spacey epseically as lex luthor. the speical effects and etc were amazing of course, and the sotry itself was pretty kool. altho i wish theyd stick closer to the comics and depend less on the earlier movies. i dont think they ought to do a total rehaul like batman begins, because we know enough of the origin story, but i think there was room for improvement.
I went with my dad and my two boys today. We all really enjoyed it. The kids kinda squirmed in their seats during the slower parts(as in any movie), but they still loved it. I liked how they payed homage to the old movies, and still updated the characters all at the same time. I can’t wait for the sequel! And how about that airplane scene! Incredible!!!

Just saw it today and I have to say that I was very pleased with it. Im not sure who the actor was that played Superman but there was a lot of resemblances IMO to the old Superman. Very well done and the movie at 2 1/2 hours was superb. There was something missing from the movie but im not quite sure what it is
[I]Yeah I agree, and I’m really really surprised to see so many people like this movie. There were so many things wrong with this movie that I just couldn’t get past it.
The whole time Metropolis was shaking and the Daily Planet was falling apart…no one once mentioned where the heck Clark was. Add to the fact that they made sooo obvious about the similarities that Clark and Superman had that the joke went over my head because it was way too stupid to laugh at.
Superman returns…Clark returns…at the same time…Hmmm.
And don’t get me started on the whole kid thing. I tried to stay away from all the spoilers, and when I first saw the kid, I couldn’t believe they went with this storyline.
The only saving grace this movie had was the amazing cast which acted brilliantly.
Serously, I wanted to like this movie really bad especially with me hating X3.
I know a lot of people in the theatre were groaning and wanted the movie to be over. It was waaay too long and there were too many scenes that dragged on. I went with three friends and two cousins, and only one of us liked it…and sure wasn’t me.[/I]
Yeah, I’ve got to say it looks amazing - the clips I’ve seen just look awesome! I’m still something of a big kid, if I see really cool CGI of Superman zooming around trying to rescue an airplane, I’m totally sold!
I have to say that they did a great job on Superman Returns. It is a very good movie, and I was dissapointed in X-men 3, because 1&2 were so good and 3 didn’t have that X-men feel to it that the others had. Granted, it was a good movie, just not as good as the other two. I believe it’s because Brian Singer left. He did a GREAT job on Superman, though.
Okay well here is a huge counter point. I went to see Superman Returns with some friends and let me say…it sucked. The airplane sequence in question is not that good, Spacey had nothing on Hackman which was very surprising, the whole Su…you haven’t seen it right…okay well a major point minor played sucked, Kryptonite Island…you will laugh at how much that doesn’t make sense in relation to Superman.
Sorry but this had nothing on the original 2. It was a boring story, with some very dogdy acting in places and it was far to predictable.
1/5 (that 1 is for the part on Krypto island…while it makes no sense…what happens to Supes is very entertaining to watch)
Why even compare? I’m not even surprised to see a post like that seeing as how any original property from the 80’s is going to be perceived as “better” by a party who most likely experienced the original films when they were a kid. Anything is going to be quote unquote awsome when they are little. I don’t even want to hear complaints about the story from the new film when the earlier films storylines are as weak as they are. Seriously… weak. I’m sorry but those movies were only immortilized because of Reeves and the crap he went through with his life… his life is a perfect example of irony.
Aside from all this, I would not go into the movie expecting something as great as the resurrection of Jesus Christ. You will be extremely dissapointed. But if you go into the theatre expecting a good rehatching of the characters, a decent story, and beautiful graphics… you will love it.
Just imagine someone redoing Star Wars 4,5,6 with new actors and a different director… yea hell would break loose.
Okay firstly, if anything is going to be good to kid then now as an adult I would be able to make a more informed decision. I still like them.
I was not expecting Returns to be great I thought “it should be interesting to see a new generation of people handling the franchise”. I was disappointed, it was boring, far to much ahem ‘love’ and Spacey while I love the man had nothing on Hackman. Routh could not pull of the clumsy Clark, Reeves had it down to a tee. Yes the stories may seem weak by todays standards but they are far better than “kryptonite island”.
Sorry comparisons are going to be made, people comapred Star Wars eps 1,2 and 3 to 4, 5 and 6 and they will compare Superman.
Okay so the effects (for the most part) were obviously far better but what kind of praise is that?
Also the whole American Jesus thing got me angry: see - him falling back to earth.
Superman 1: Little piece of Kryptonite stops him from doing anything, gets saved, stopped missile, Lois is killed (hate the whole reverses time thing grrr), saves Lois and Jimmy. Sorted.
Superman Returns: Manages to fly and feel fine on a kryptonite island and then manages to pick it up and throw it into to space. Give me a break, if a little piece disabled him in 1 that island would have killed as soo as he landed. Nice one Singer :roll:
Aside from all the little quips… you have to admit Superman is a difficult character to develop and write for. It would be so hard to try and humanize him. I dont know how you could take some one like superman and make him relatable… but thats the point… thats what a super hero is… someone who is so much different than us, someone non human. Thats my beef with “heros” in todays age, they arent super, they are just teenagers with powers and egos, not to mention no moral code
Sorry but I prefer heroes who are human and have human problems and I can relate to rather than people like Superman (who I don’t lkike anyway). My favourite Superhero is Spider-Man, he has super powers yet, he got his Uncle Ben killed, killed Gwen Stacy, couldn’t save Captain Stacy, he best friend turns into the second Green Goblin and eventually dies. All these problems he has make his character just so much more interesting.
Also if Superman is hard to write for then Singer shouldn’t have taken on the job. I can’t wait to see what he is going to do for the sequel :roll:

I loved the movie. But then again, I do love cartoon action heroes. I thought how they worked in the whole Lois has a kid thing was interesting. Can’t wait for a sequel.
Ok Guys, first of all may I first of all note that I knew nothing about Superman prior to watching this film. So I can not really contribute to the comparisons between the previous films, comics, cartoons etc.. But it also gives me the ability to provide a non-bias account of Superman Returns as a film.
I went to see it with my two best friends and I have to say that it wasn’t that bad. It kept me intrested, wasn’t too long, had amazing CGI and was well acted.
One of the main problems I had with the film was how obvious the link between Clark and Superman was. There was a scene where is Clark stood directly above a TV screen with Superman on it… there is a room full of his co-workers and Lois’ child…and it was only the child who was like…hmmmm?? :scratching: How stupid must the people who know Clark be!! :banghead: In the world of Superman you can remove your glasses and gel your hair and you are a completely new person. My friends and I found it laugh out loud funny how they failed to spot it.
Other problems which stem from the concept of Superman are the frequently shed clothes that he leaves lying accross the city. It would be unfair to critisize the film for that though.
In terms of the plot, again fueling how obvious the link between Clark and Superman is, they both returned at the same time. :duh: My friends also picked up on the likeness parts of the story had to the story of Christ.
The acting was better than I had anticipated, I had the strangest feeling I wasn’t going to like Brandon Routh but found him to be quite good. I didn’t fancy Lois Lane, but found Kevin Spacey as Lex Luther amazing as usual.
To come to a close, I think my main problem with this film was how soon I watched it after seeing Batman Begins for the first time. One of the reasons I loved Batman Begins is how serious and real they made the film. Superman Returns has a humorous bubbly quality to it.
A good watch, with a few questionable moments…not a patch on Batman Begins… As my friend said about Superman.. “Batman would batter him!”
