Speculations on Thunderian society....

Again, good ideas all. I’m also wondering if Grune will have taken over thundera after the revolt. That might be his role in the show; oppressively ruling Thundera, and sending lackey after lackey to Third earth to destroy the exiled Nobles, and reclaim the sword of Omens to legitimize his rule.

This is probably 1 of the better theories 've heard on the whole topic…1. No destruction of Thundera 2. Grune starting a revolution and becoming some oppresive dictator (possibly enslaving thundarians if he struck a deal with Mumm-Ra/Mutants) 3. Nobles fleeing to safety at third Earth where ‘lackys’ get sent to assassinate them/steal sword 4. Eventually when Lion-O is ‘ready’ they will mount a counter-attack against Grune and win back Thundera, driving mutants out and freeign the thundarians

Yes, I think a ‘libertation of Thundera’ arc in the fourth or fifth season would be far more dramatic and interesting than having the planet magically re-form itself due to some goofy gyroscope-thing.

I love the thought of Grune being in charge of Thundera, but that would make the Thundercats look like cowards only trying to save themselves if they would run away to Third Earth to come up with a plan. That almost sounds like “Okay, Grune has our planet under his command, let’s save ourselves and let him oppress the entire planet of Thundera…we’ll come back later when we feel we are strong enough to win.”

I don’t think Jaga was ever lord of the ThunderCats in the original. I don’t think the sword of omens was necessarily the sword of the lord of the ThunderCats. It was a shock to the Mutants when they boarded the flagship in Exodus to find the Eye of Thundera embedded in the hilt of the Sword of Omens. I think the Eye of Thundera was always kept by the Lord of the ThunderCats and because Claudus was going to perish and and Lion-O would become lord, he entrusted the Eye of Thundera to Jaga who would be taking charge of getting Lion-O to safety. Jaga then decided he would embed the Eye of Thundera into the hilt of the sword of omens which had been his sword. And perhaps Jaga was some kind of priestly figure in the original series backstory and the keeping of the omen items (sword, book, etc…) were the responsibility of priests. I don’t know. But I don’t believe Jaga was ever lord but I don’t think the sword of omens was ever Claudus’s sword. Just my thoughts.

There are just too many inconsistencies in the show to be honest.
Jaga was the guardian of the sword. But then why was it a rule for Lion-O to have to leave the sword behind in the trials?
You never see Claudus use the sword without Jaga there. Even when he still had his eyesight.

I’m one of the ones who thinks Lion-O inherited a dual role. He didn’t just inherit Claudus’ title as Lord, but Jaga’s role as guardian as well.

Probably because the Eye of Thundera, the source of the ThunderCats power, was embedded in the sword’s hilt and Lion-O had to face the trials without the Eye of Thundera. Perhaps he could have had the sword if the Eye wasn’t in it.

Huh?

Perhaps. That does seem a bit confusing.

Maybe Claudus and Jaga were brothers.

well i know in the toon they did call claudaus the lord of the thundercats then they had also called jag lord and im guessing it was because in the toon lionos father was blinded fighting the mutants so that can be explained by that
i believe liono was defenitly the lord of the thundercats once the annointment trials ended he was there leader savior and whatever else u wanna call him it was that important

I always saw it like that. Sort of what Tygra was to Lion-O, Jaga was to Claudus. Second in command. And when Claudus got ill Jaga took over.

But Jagas new roll seems very interesting. I wonder where he fits in the whole hierarchy now.

In Return to Thundera When Lion-O went to the past the guards called Claudus Lord of the Thundercats. Claudus was blind in that episode. And that part happened right before they escaped Thundera. So that tells me Jaga wasn’t Lord After Claudus was blinded. If he was ever Lord of the Thundercats it had to have been either before Claudus or Directly after the Planet exploded because they Assumed Claudus was dead and Jaga would be there to lead the refugees.

In the original Series we do have one reference of Jaga being the Lord Of the Thundercats.
In the episode-The Jade Gragon, The Ancient Spirits of Evil tell Mumm-Ra a story about Hachiman’s ancestor who gave the Double-headed dragon of doom to his wife as a marriage gift and because her father was against their marriage, he put a curse on the dragon and it engulfed Hachiman’s ancestor. This legend is supposed to have taken place ‘Many centuries ago’ when ‘Jaga the Wise was then Lord of the Thundercats’, according to the Spirits’ narration. Jaga then released the samurai from the dragon’s prison and put the Dragon into the casket which held the treasure of Thundera…

So this is how way back the Lordship of Thundera is taking us..

So with the evidence presented it should be safe to assume that the Title of Lord of the Thundercats was given to Jaga, Claudus, and then Lion-O in that order.

Jaga must be older than Claudus, so i believe this is the right order.
But i assume Jaga was Lord only for a short time

Could be a title to refer to Jaga as Lord Jaga. Ie. lords and ladies. Could merely be a title in a hierarchy style of government. Didn’t Lion-O once meet a greedy Thunderian who either had the title of Duke or Baron?

yes the thundercats did in the ep well of doubts

also i saw earlier were jaga liono and claudous related i beleive so cause why the heck would jaga spend so much time helping liono so much appearing before him in every episode if he didnt care for him like that. im guessing he probably was an uncle or something along those lines cause he and liono seemed really close

I always took it to be like Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobe. Obi-Wan was not related to Luke yet when he died, he reappeared to Luke in the same way Jaga appeared to Lion-O in a ghostly kind of way. They even died similarily, with their bodies vanishing and not leaving a body behind. I have a hard time seeing Jaga actually being related to Lion-O.

Following on that, many of those scenes reminded me of the arenas. Perhaps his anointment trials are done in public. That’s how it looked to me.

I think that Grune was a double agent. I think the scene with him and the slaves is after he’s outed himself as a traitor and he’s actually coming back to Thunderia to attack it and by then he’s down with Mumm-ra

It would kind of bug me to see Thunderian society with slaves. But it wouldn’t be abnormal given it’s a monarchy. They might really believe they’re better than mutants and keep them as slaves without seeing themselves as oppressors ..then again that’s something that to look forward to because it’s definitely not the ThunderCats I grew up with

If you look at the second trailer when Claudus is giving his pre-battle speech, Grune is still beside him. So he doesn’t get outed until after the battle has already started.

However, I don’t think the slavery is something Claudus knows about.

Yeah but they look like they’re pulling some big bomb or something. He could have disappeared during the battle then shown up with the other guys in an “Hahahaha…I am not really your man, I have just been pretending in order to learn the secrets of the sword of Omens” moment /re-entry

I wonder if the Sword of Omens will still be unable to cut things that aren’t a threat? It it’s not a life or death battle to vanquish evil will it just refuse to work. That would make practicing sword fighting a bytch
