Site revision - plans and updates

I can’t seem to work the wordpress for some reason - am trying my login and password and isn’t letting me in. :frowning:

Chris here…

Hey Nick, is your problem perhaps anything to do with this:

Let me know, my friend!

Take care…

I’m planning on working on the Toy section next week and hope to get at least half of the section done by the end of September.

I spoke with Neil in August regarding the Toy section, and will post progress reports on the forum to keep both Neil and MannyC up to date with what I’m doing.

Huh. I go confused with viewing the site and the Wordpress login business.

That’s a fantastic design, Chris. I love it. Thank you for doing that - much appreciated.

Chris here…

No problems, Nick - I’ll post up links to your interview pages as they get completed!

Here’s the page for your documentary as well: http://www.thundercatslair.org/relaunch/?page_id=1012

I’ve done two new pages today that both feature Quicktime (.mov) videos - however, these don’t seem to display the video, only the audio, in WordPress! They only display with both audio and video when downloaded or opened in a new window - is this the same for everyone else?

Here are the pages:

ThunderCats Outtakes - http://www.thundercatslair.org/relaunch/?page_id=1020
Public Service Announcement Video page - http://www.thundercatslair.org/relaunch/?page_id=1001

I’ve also done this page, which also contains a video:

Children’s TV on Trial: The 1980s - http://www.thundercatslair.org/relaunch/?page_id=992

…However, this video file has a .wmv extension, and so seems to play fine in WordPress!

Could you guys take a look and let me know about this? Many thanks!

EDIT: And BTW, I’ve tested the videos out in more than one browser, and it’s the same across the board - i.e., it doesn’t appear to be a browser-specific problem.

Take care…
Merged Post:
Chris here…

Update - the Interviews subsection, including all of Nick’s audio interviews, is completed!

Go to this index page to check out all the pages: http://www.thundercatslair.org/relaunch/?page_id=727 .

Next I intend to finish the Articles & Features section (minus the scripts, for which I will need the new site watermark) and then move on to the Encyclopedia pages. Today I’ve also done some more work on the thumbnail graphics for that section, these should hopefully be online soon!

If MannyF or someone in the know could take a look at those pages with the videos that I linked to above, and LMK how their functionality could be improved, that would be great. Many thanks!

Take care…

Chris here…

Just wondering how everyone is getting on rebuilding the site?

I’m not likely to achieve my goal of getting the Cartoon Section (minus the Episode Guide and Scripts pages) completely done by the end of September, but I’m not ridiculously far off either!

I’ve done too many pages to list them all individually, but if you visit the Cartoon Section home page and have a browse round, you’ll see everything I’ve achieved so far: http://www.thundercatslair.org/relaunch/?page_id=227 .

At the moment I’m focussing almost entirely on Kyle’s Encyclopedia pages, and I hope between now and the end of the week to get more of these completed!

Mark: I sent you a PM containing links to some videos I uploaded that I wondered if you could upload to this site’s YouTube Channel - did it get to you OK? My plan is to embed those videos in a couple of pages where we currently have the files available to download, to protect our content and also provide a better user experience. Please can you LMK if you got my message OK? Many thanks!

Take care…

Hey Chris, sorry for the delay mate. I’m uploading a few tonight it is slow going but I should be done in a couple days.

Cheers,
Mark

EDIT

All done!

Chris here…

Hey Mark, just wanted to say thanks so much for this - you’re a legendary figure, my friend!

Here’s an example of what I was talking about, I think the embedded video improves the page no end: http://www.thundercatslair.org/relaunch/?page_id=1355 .

Take care…

Ive taken yet another step back in my personal life. I had an injury to my wrist 6 weeks ago which hasnt healed and today the doctor put me on a cast for 4 weeks. To top it off Im starting school next week and I will also be having foot surgery in about 3 weeks. Things just dont get any better for me :frowning:

Chris here…

Hey Manny, REALLY sorry to hear that things are so crap for you at the moment - hope things start to look up for you, my friend… :frowning:

Take care…

Wow Manny! Hope it all goes well with your surgery and after that things get better

Get well soon, Manny. I hope you’re alright.

Hey guys, wanted to write and say that I’m sorry I wasn’t able to get to my goal for September. Clearly my life is a little busier than I realize so for October I’m going to scale back my goal somewhat and focus on only a few pages for my conversion. What I plan on doing is moving over the existing Hard Hero pages to the new format, and I aim to do that by the end of this month.

The rest of my work for the month will be on the new prototypes and planning for how that section should fit in, and I’ll be working on getting advertising dollars and support in from the statue makers and others in the toy/statue community.

Could I ask the rest of the team to talk about what they achieved in September, and what you’re now putting in as your goal for October?

So far Chris is putting us all to shame! Well done on all you’ve completed Chris… you da man.

I’m gonna be honest. I’ve always blagged my way through page building. Some of my work has been cool, while other has been borderline acceptable.

Now entering into something new (Wordpress) has not helped my confidence one bit. Infact it’s had the opposite effect. I mean if we have to write the coding by hand, what does WordPress actually do to make things easier?

I was told we could simply input the data on a form and Wordpress would do the rest? Maybe if someone could guide me (live on chat or Skype voice) through making my first page it might help my confidence…

So to answer Mark’s question… until I am able to create pages my progress will be the same every month. Mark how are you managing to do pages as once you admitted page building wasn’t easy for you?

Aside from Nick and I, everyone seems to know what they are doing…:frowning:

Chris here…

Hey Neil, the main selling point about WordPress is that there is a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) visual interface such as you would get working in a program like Dreamweaver, you can use this or the HTML interface…

The reason I use the HTML interface is because I personally find the visual interface quite “buggy” and assumes that you don’t mean to do certain things that you do in fact mean to do (if that makes sense) - so, for example, if I want 6 line breaks between one line of text and another line of text, if I input the line breaks by hitting the return key on my keyboard, the WordPress visual interface assumes that I’ve done that by mistake and deletes the extra lines. :frowning:

However, as I say, it is possible to create and update pages via a visual interface using WordPress, and the advantage of this is that these pages will all validate in terms of the coding that is automatically generated by WordPress to create them.

I’d happily talk you through doing it on Skype or whatever, but to be honest having developed a distinct preference for the HTML interface because of the issues I’ve encountered above, I don’t think I’d be the best person to try and help. :frowning:

Hope you’re able to get to grips with it, Neil!

As to my goals for October, the target that I’ve set for myself is to try and complete the transfer of the entire Cartoon Section (which entails completing the Encyclopedia pages, the episode scripts, and the currently completed Episode Guide pages) by the end of this month. Whether I’ll achieve that is another matter as I have a massive amount happening this month, but that’s the target that I’m working towards!

Take care…

Manny, Chris,

Could one of you help me figure out the best way to do links in wordpress? I’m finding it very confusing.

I skimmed through the “help” article here: http://codex.wordpress.org/Linking_Posts_Pages_and_Categories

This just confused me even more.

What I want to know is… what is the best way for me to setup a number of links as follows:

On this page: http://www.thundercatslair.org/relaunch/?page_id=46

I am showing the five statues that Hard Hero has put order pages up for and I am setting up a page to profile each statue. From this ‘main’ Hard Hero page I want to use the images of each statue as the link to the profile page.

Do I just input the link for individual statues as follows into the images:
http://www.thundercatslair.org/relaunch/?page_id=1428 for Cheetara

Or is there a better way?

When we launch the site will that link URL still work? When using wordpress does it ignore the old site structure that we’ve used… like on the current site the full path to the same Cheetara page is:

http://www.thundercatslair.org/merchandise/statues/cheetara.html

Am I doing this right?

Chris here…

Hey Mark, as far as I’m aware when the site is uploaded all links to anywhere else within the site will automatically become updated, so the /relaunch element of the URL addresses will all disappear…I hope.

I’m working in the HTML interface and to link from one page to another I’m copy-and-pasting the URL address assigned to each page I create and then using that as the link…

It’s another thing I find frustrating about WordPress - whereas working in straight HTML I can save pages with whatever file names I want - so, I could work out beforehand that from …cartoon/encyclopedia/index.html, I would want to link to:

…cartoon/encycloepdia/liono.html
…cartoon/encyclopedia/cheetara.html

…etc., etc., now I have to wait until I’ve built each page and add the link to an index page retrospectively. :frowning:

I always believed that there was a way you could create custom slugs (URLs) for WordPress pages, but I’m blowed if I can find how you do it in the framework I have access to! :frowning:

But yeah, hopefully that helps a little, Mark, and LMK if you need any more help!

Take care…

Here is my September / October goal completed, though I can’t get the damned images level despite using a table to try and do so:

http://www.thundercatslair.org/relaunch/?page_id=46

Chris here…

Hey Mark, they all look level to me - I’m using Safari for Windows!

Just a heads-up, however - you’ve made the same mistake I made in the beginning and not given the Bengali page a “parent”, which has therefore placed it on the navigation bar at the top, for the whole entire site!

This is an easy fix though - just go into the page and select the Hard Hero Statues as the parent from the list on the right hand side!

Take care…

Thanks Chris, I’ll give Bengali the orphan a parent later tonight then… lol
