Season 2 revealed at Powercon

The bolded, EXACTLY right. And you are right it didn’t sound like there was any choice at all but the one Tygra made I think everyone would know that but still be unable to help feeling devastated at the choice, for Tygra to bear that burden GEEZ like the guy doesn’t have enough baggage. This would have destroyed them and I am deeply disappointed there was no info on Cheetara but hopefully in the vid that’s coming?

I know that you guys are all interested in the information we’ve just been given and you think they would be good directions for the show to go, but honestly don’t. There are certain things you’d expect from a reboot of an earlier television show; yes certain things are bound to get turned around and/or altered in hopes of making the reboot stand out on its own, but certain aspects still should have the similar feel as the original.

In the OS Pumyra was a good guy through and through. Yes, they gave her an angrier personality in the NS, but they should have still kept her as a good guy, the betrayal would have been something that could be overlooked if they made Pumyra an ally again, but now they’re saying that Pumyra goes down as a villain and was never meant to be a member of the group. That just doesn’t sit well with me, maybe you all think was a good idea, but i really don’t.

The same thing can be said about Lynx-O, he was a survivor in the OS, but now they say that he was supposed to die at some point in the NS? Did they just not want the “New Thundercats” around at all?

But what really bugs me most of all (aside from the Pumyra thing) is the idea of making Slithe a sympathetic character. In the OS, Slithe was a villain through and through and the NS portrayed him as being even more vicious than his counterpart, but now, we’re expected to believe that he’s a sympathetic character who ultimately does something heroic that costs him his own life? That is not the NS General Slithe i’ve been watching.

If there’s more coming our way, i shudder to think what else was in store for this season.

And here I was thinking the obligatory srebak complaining post was a thing of the past. Boy was I wrong.

I think it’s good to have a sympathetic bad guy every now and then. It doesn’t justify the horrible stuff they have done, it just makes it easier to understand why they do bad things. It doesn’t absolve them from anything, just makes it easier to figure them out.

I’m not a fan of dumbing it down for the kids, but I wonder if this would have been too much too soon for those 12 and under. Casualties of war often include the young and defenseless, but can you really explain to a child what it takes for someone to rush in and brutalize the lizards in such a way? What do you say to Jr when he asks why Lynxo would do something like that? I dunno maybe Im thinking too hard about it. Maybe the average kid wouldn’t give it too much thought but if that’s the case do we question the writing or the parents? lol im done. I think.

Fortunately we are all entitled to our own opinions let’s try and remember that. I personally really respect the path they were going to take it was risky and could have paid off or not, it was a route that wasn’t a safe one nor predictable and I have to give them props for such a move. I get bored with people taking a classic I grew up on only to rehash it in a way that is ‘safe’ I don’t like safe, I like risk and costs it makes for better story telling, otherwise you get stuff like Star Trek Into Darkness which is just the same story we’ve seen before in older Trek packaged pretty, I’m never impressed with that, it’s lazy and shows you aren’t confident in your new story idea and if you aren’t then what are you here for? I think homage is important but really if I wanted to watch TC original I’d pop in my DVD set.

The planned second season of the NS would be darker and edgier, and would’ve been better suited to air on Adult Swim.

Exactly right. I think the new season would have put it a step above the rest because so many bad things were happening. If they would focus on the plot and done what they said here, it would have put the first season to shame.

This. There are some concepts pushing the line of comprehension to children under 10 in the ends justifying the means/necessary evil that the cats commit (Lynx-O and Tygra in particular) that I wonder if that age group would get without completely demonizing the cats, as is I’m having a hard time with coming to terms with the cats behaving uncannily similar to settlers pushing violent colonization on natives. Lynx-O’s actions reeked of it and it was grossly uncomfortable and ugly. Invade lands? Check. Mass Genocide? Check. The cats are looking pretty bad here.

Every time, whenever i dislike something about a tv show or a movie, it’s always something that everyone else seems to enjoy and praise. Am i really the only one who doesn’t like what they planning to do in the 2nd season?

I wonder how far into it they would have gone? Would they have tried to make the cats more sympathetic too? Would they write it off as war just being ugly? I know this guy and he’s pretty cool and what not but he slaughters (I’m assuming) defenseless women and children. On the other hand he makes good burritos.

What about Slythe’s revenge and how does it hold up next to Tygra’s choice to kill Pumyra?

Pumyra had to be turned into an ugly bug before she took one to the head?
What about Lynx-O’s head? Not sure if decapitation rolls over as well before 10am.

I honestly don’t know what to think about some of this, and just when I get comfortable with my thoughts, I change my mind.

I think what helps me is being actively uncomfortable and embracing the tugging of my emotions, we are supposed to see clearly the grey shades and how far someone will go to save someone they love or avenge them perhaps children (being full of emotion without much maturity to control them) would have found it easier to understand that first thought. Doesn’t mean I’d let my very young ones, if I had any, see a lot of what the writers had in store! Our expectations are being turned on our heads and I’m okay with the mind blows, I feel like the creators want us to really understand there are really no absolute good guys here nor wholly evil except Mummra playing a sadistic sort of God figure (he did create them after all) using them all for his own purpose, and like a god’s children they are warring animals without guidance all because greed, arrogance and revenge rule them especially the cats.

Well after reading that, all I can say is, Cartoon Network, I hate you.

SPOILERS

Those sound like some pretty extreme ideas that broke from my expectations, but dang they sound interesting. The Pumyra/Tygra thing really grabbed my attention. Admittedly, I misread it first. For some reason I thought it said that Lion-O refused to fight Pumyra in order to spare her and get her to turn good again, only for her to kill Tygra. Now THAT would be a heck of an angle, huh? But either way, that is still very interesting. And the whole Snarf thing really blows my mind too. Again, I had ideas in my head of where Snarf came from, what he is, and what his ties are to the Thundercats, but I never dreamed up anything like him basically being a Beta Test Thundercat experiment. So does that mean Snarf is Immortal and knows the whole history between Mumm-Ra & The TCats? I guess that sort of makes him like R2-D2 in a sense.

And the Slythe angle? Wow. I never would have imagined that. I never dreamed that Slythe would be a repentant or redeemable character, but again, if you look back to the pilot and then read this, maybe that had that in mind all along. Slythe seems to really hate Claudis on a personal level rather than the typical social/political issues that go hand in hand with warring nations. He seemed to genuinely hate Claudis personally in that pilot, and knowing what they had planned for him, I can picture in my head what the scene with him kneeling infront of his wife’s grave and Mumm-Ra appearing to him to offer the deal. Wow…

Now I have been structuring my own fanfic scripts for season 2 but I never had anything like this in mind. This show definitely would have kept me guessing for sure because again, I didn’t picture any of this, but it is all interesting.

So yeah, this info is just more salt in the wound. WB, CN, just…GAH!

Bolding this out as well.

He probably cared for her but we have no clue at all how long it would take for this to happen. Something tells me Lion-O probably was blinded and Tygra did what had to be done and that he would realise that either by what Tygra did and understood the danger or that Tygra got help from the other cats. I mean with the news we just got Pumyra is done for, he’s evil (Not really mattering right now if it’s Mumm-Ra or her own doing) and dangerous.

My thoughts would be that this maybe was supposed to happen at the end of the season and the parties having a couple of battles, meetings or interactions with each other with Lion-O being 50/50 about the Pumyra situation. He knows she betrayed them but he still thinks there is something left of her old self, trying to get that to work Tygra has to SAVE him with he might not be happy about (Tygra killing here) but he comes to realise later without worries. Tygra did nothing wrong here, she was evil, not on their team, she betrayed them. I support Tygra and i think Lion-O would understand sooner or later.

I’m sorry but i dont even understand your opinion on the show/ second season, why dont you like it? The little i’ve read about your hate for the reboot seems to just be in the line of it being not as the original or “too dark”, is that correct?

With most of the beans spilled i agree with Hammy saying this would put the first season to shame. I still consider the reboot one of the best new shows we got along with Korra and the new TMNT. The backstory for the world and it’s characters were so deep and interesting that when a “story episode” was on the way i had a hard time waiting, the mix of fantasy and sci-fi is great and something i will use in many of my own works in the coming years. It just sucks it had to be one of those “toy commercial shows” and it failed miserably that way. If it just was a show in it’s own that would live based on ratings i would have been the most happy.

LONG LIVE THE THUNDERCATS, HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I know, right?

That is sad that they were going to kill off Pumyra and Lynx-O, and still no mention of Bengali.

I really would liked more info Cheetara and Panthro

I would have liked to see a family reunion for the twins.

Snarf as an experiment is interesting but it still doesn’t explain were and when they found him.

I wonder if Jaga was going to get any background info or at least show up again as a spirit.

Would have liked to see Grune come back as his ghostly version.

If you look more closely there will be a podcast that will give us more info. Obviously you missed it but try to read through the whole article and all comments in the thread before you start typing.

I like some of the ideas revealed, but not all. I pretty much called it on Slythe’s family getting killed, but not by Lynx-O. I kind of like Pumyra getting corrupted, but not getting killed by Tygra.

I don’t think these ideas necessarily would have ended up in the final product. There were ideas from season 1 that didn’t really end up getting used. If season 2 had been made, I would hope that they wouldn’t go quite as dark as this.

This still isn’t the whole picture though. I really want that podcast.

Darker, edgier, whatever I would have taken it. Im not thrilled with the idea of killing off Pumyra and Lynxo but if it ment a second season then so be it.

But in reality these were just story outlines. Cartoon network would ultimately have had a final say on what could air and may have shot down thier ideas. This happens a lot. Writers plan out story lines but are ultimately shot down by studio execs and networks. Money talks, if the figures sold over expectations and let’s say Pumyra’s figure sold like hot cakes there’s no way WB would allow them to kill her off. That would just eliminate the potential for further varients of a popular figure. I realize this is only a possible senario but that’s the way things work. Money makes the world go round.

Money is everything to studios like Cartoon Network.

I know i’m probably going to get torn new one for this, but Gold Lion and Cougar both make good points. Maybe the points that we were shown in the article were only what the writers first had in mind, if said ideas didn’t get passed the approval stage then they’d have to change them somehow, maybe not by much, but still

I repeat though, i shudder to think what else they had planned for the darker and edgier season. Don’t get me wrong, i understand that a lot of great shows are dark and edgy (Batman is “living” proof of that) and i enjoy quite a few of them. But i think the second season of this show was about to cross a line or two somehow.

Just so we’re clear, it was supposed to be revealed that Snarf and his kind were as closely related to the Cats as Chimpanzees are to humans?
