Roar = Thundercats (live action)?

I’m sure I mentioned this in the past on these boards or maybe it was elsewhere but it’s back in my head and it’s time I make a thread about it in case someone is interested.

So my wife introduced me to this show called ‘Roar’ starring Heath Ledger. It was from 97, but I guess got repeats in 2000 and only ran for 8 episodes originally. All 13 eventually got aired elsewhere. It released on dvd in 2006 so my wife picked it up which is how I ended up hearing about it and seeing it.

Anyway… It wasn’t until a little into the new series when I started realizing the similarity between Thundercats and this show. So I’m highly recommending it for anyone with an open mind and who’s interested in seeing a sort of live-action Thundercats (without animals and future tech, although there is the threat of gun-powder as sort of a “magical” weapon).

The show takes place in the year 400 AD and centers around Heath ledger as Prince Connor (Lion-O) who finds his father and clan destroyed. He takes up his father’s sword and goes on a quest to unite the Celtic (animal) clans to pose a bigger threat against an imposing king an queen, and an evil wizard (Mumm-Ra) whose body is decrepit except when under a spell to look more youthful.

Along the way, Connor (Lion-O) is aided by three other warriors (Panthro, Tygra, and Cheetara) to take on evil, restore order amongst the clans, and harness the power of “the roar” (sword of omens? sight beyond sight? I forget this part of the show to be honest lol) to take out Longinus (Mumm-Ra), the evil wizard.

Edit: If you’re a fan of those other shows of this type (Xena, Hercules etc) I’m sure you’ll enjoy it just as well.

Well I did debate where to put it but where else? I’m just sharing info for something that fans of the new series may or may not enjoy based on the similar subject matter. Maybe even drum up conversation from others who’ve seen it and draw more parallels. What’s the harm?

I laugh seeing that character line-up because I can’t help but put the T-cats in their place haha. Too bad they didn’t have appropriate weapons.

honestly, this is more or less the basic plot of a lot of shows. if anything, instead of showing how much these shows have in common, your comparison shows just how generic Thundercats is once you get past the “cat people” aspect

main character is a young hero on a quest of some sort
joined by small group of 2-3 people, usually includes 1 female
opposed by an evil figure, usually a sorcerer

pretty much the plot of every straight to dvd fantasy film, and i have seen plenty! Admittingly the new TC did follow the same outline, it did however have good animation to disguise it to an extent.
