It’s 10 years today since the events of 9/11 - just wanted to post up a thread sending out my thoughts and prayers to the friends & family of those who lost their lives on that tragic day.
I still remember exactly where I was when I heard about it - I was posting on the forums at www.he-man.org when somebody posted up a thread titled “Turn on the TV…now!!” with the body text “Can you believe what we’re seeing?!” I turned on my TV to images of complete carnage - so terribly sad and wasteful…
I had just gotten up to go to work/college (I was both student and employee at the time). I was at work maybe 30 minutes before we closed since we had no idea who was behind it and figured a college could be a possible target too.
I was sick that day with bronchitis, and unemployed, so I slept in. I heard a tremendous noise, and all my sleepy brain could think was: Hmmm. Must have been some pothole. That truck lost its axle.
I didn’t get up until some time later. I had breakfast. The phone rang. My sister yelled on the end of the line, "Get out of the house!
“Why?”
“Don’t you know what is going on!”
“No.”
Then I turned on the TV. I got off the phone because I did not want to tie up the line. My husband worked down at the State Department. The phone rang. It was my husband saying he was okay.
And then the line went dead, and CNN put up a bulletin: Bomb goes off at State Department.
I counted to ten, knowing that when I finished, the phone would ring. And it did.
I watched the towers fall, something my mind still has still not processed.
When a jet flew over my house, and the sonic boom rattled the structure, I grabbed a knife and raced out of my house. I stood on my lawn in my pajamas. I remember the clear sky; cool weather, and bees hugging blue flowers.
No Matter your Ethnicity, Religion, Sex, or Sexual Orientation. On days like these we all stand together to remember not only the heros but the lost and all of their friends and families. These are the times we all stand as Americans and say “You may destroy our buildings and tear us from our families but you can never Take Us Down”.
Backpack leaf blower, working behind the office at the cemetery I worked (still work) at. The boss opened the garage door and told me about it. I went home to watch the events unfold, wondering about all the people I know in the States and hoping for the best. It was unreal, and I still can’t fully wrap my mind around it.
I was in high school at the time. We didn’t have the tv on during second period spanish, it was on by the time I got to Biology. It was the only thing we did in any class for the rest of the day. Unfortunatly, by the end of the day most of the other kids were too busy talking among themselves that I couldn’t hear much of the newscast…
I watched news and documentaries all day. 10 years later and I still can’t watch it without crying.
10 years ago I woke up earlier than I normally would on a day that my first college class didn’t start until 11:00. I got on my computer and went to some message board where I saw people posting about the world trade center which I thought odd because I thought they were talking about the 1993 bombing. When I realized that whatever they were talking about was current, I went into the other room and turned on the tv. I didn’t think it would be on the local news channels so I went to the cable national news channels. Of course I was wrong, they were all covering it. I sat glued to the tv, surfing between different channels who were covering it. When I started watching, only one tower was burning. I ended up on a channel that the only thing on the screen was live footage of the towers with the anchors talking over it. As I watched, I saw it live when the second plane hit, but the anchors kept talking like nothing happened so it all started to feel surreal to me as I tried to understand what I had just seen. Finally the anchors stopped and emotionally stated that a plane had just hit the second tower. Up to that point, I was thinking the plane crashing into the one tower was a terrible accident. When the second plane hit, it was a sinking feeling and sudden revelation that this was no accident. The tears started later when they started interviewing people on the streets, frantic to find their loved ones. That’s when the loss of life really hit me and why I still get emotional when I watch footage.
9/11/01 I was working on a cruise ship in the middle of the ocean as it was a sea day for us. My wife was working an early morning shopping talk for the next days port while I was still asleep. We were entertainment techs. During the talk she started to hear things amongst the passengers. After the talk she came down to our room woke me and turned on the news. We watched for about an hour at which point we got a call from our Cruise director telling us to get upstairs for an emergency meeting with the rest of the staff. From there we planned for masses to be held for everyone and we also had to decide what to do as far as regular entertainment. Thankfully like the rest of the world we decided to go on with our regular lives and not let this event stop us. It was horribly hard and not very well attended as most everyone was glued to their TV’s but we were glad we went on.
Today I too spent most of the day watching History Ch and other Documentaries about that horrific day. Not every really knowing exactly how I felt that day the emotions really flowed today. God Bless America!
