I conducted the interview with Stephen Perry last night - a very nice, infomative guy. Great interview, IMO. However, there was an instance where I asked him about Jules Bass and he responded with “he’s a ****in’ tyrant”.
Now.. this sounded awesome. And very impactful - he goes on to describe why and everything. But I’m looking to find out whether I should censor it out or not. IMO, I don’t think it should. It’s one instance of swearing throughout the entire interview and it really takes away if I take it out or bleep it - however, I do understand that we may cater towards a young audience and if it offends and such. That’s why I thought I’d ask you all about what I should do. I think a warning might do on the page it’s at - and just leave it in.
With ThunderCast, we’ve always bleeped out any swear words (not that there have ever been many - I think the only time was when Larry Kenney used a word that, shall we say, questioned someone’s parentage, LOL!). Even though I personally couldn’t care less about bad language, and indeed around the house do swear quite a bit, I know some people are offended by it, in which case I think it’s best to censor it. But, I’m happy to go with a majority ruling!
Great to know you had a good interview - how many of my long list of questions were you able to squeeze in, LOL?!
I got in quite a few - merged some together, edited some down shorter and added some questions of my own. (I asked about the ‘under-CAT’ line because I loved that and was shamed to hear it was cut.. Thundercats was known for cheesy dialogue: course you can stick it in. :P)
I think this should be a single interview, btw. Not something tagged onto ThunderCast - it’s too long for that, anyway. Just put up a page of it’s own, a little blurb of description and so forth.
I’d be fine with something like - Warning: This interview features one use of strong language. That way, your informing people of what’s in it and such instead of editing it out and taking away from it’s impact. Hey, swearing can be impactful too, y’know.
Oh absolutely, I wasn’t suggesting that it should be presented as part of ThunderCast - I was just citing that as an example because that’s the only time we as a team have ever encountered the use of swearing in an audio context and the question of whether or not to censor it…
Hmmmmm, myself personally I think I would still bleep it out - but like I say, I’m happy to go with a majority ruling and would be interested in the opinions of others. In the interests of balance, I would say that we do have the ThunderCats Outtakes available to download on this site, and those are just (obviously) uncensored, with a warning to folks that they do contain profanity - but, I can’t help wondering whether, if there are people who are offended by bad language, leaving the f-word in there you may dissuade people from downloading and listening to the interview who may otherwise do so…
Also, from the perspective of linking to it on the forums, we do also have a rule about linking to any websites, etc., that contain profanity or inappropriate content - to quote:
-We are not prudes here, but we believe there is a time and a place for adult content (whether that be strong language, nudity or violence) and a cartoon forum isn’t the place for it. We do not tolerate any indecent content of any kind on the forum. Basically if it wouldn’t have happened or been said in the Thundercats cartoon, then it doesn’t belong on the forum.
-Please be careful of posting links or content from outside sources such as links to other sites, YouTube videos and myspace pages. A lot of these contain content that isn’t allowed on this site. Please preview anything you want to share with others before posting, to make sure it doesn’t break any of the forum rules.
…which raises the devil’s advocate question of, is it cool for us to ask forum members not to link to anything with strong language, but then do so ourselves? I’m not necessarily taking a stance on this, but it’s all stuff to think through IMO.
It’s entirely up to the majority - I’m fine with bleeping it or taking it out if it’s what everyone wants. It’s very simple to edit and I’ll just upload the new one with the link - but I really think a small warning on the page would suffice. These are interviews and, honestly, I don’t think we’re going to offend anyone if we warn them beforehand - and I mean small, a disclaimer. Not like “WARNING! WARNING! SWEAR-WORD!” or something ridiculous like that. It’s the first time I’ve ever come across an issue like this, really - the whole swearing in an interview thing.
