Actually, it was used by the Tuska Warrior first, in the photo shoot, then came out as a green gun during production, then a year later, was released as a black gun with the Dune figure;)
Tuska was not released until 1986 But the Catalog photo was taken in 1985. None the less, you are correct, Dune did come out in 1984 making the gun a re-issue with the Tuska, interesting to note: the gun that is pictured is painted black, with silver trim. The dune gun is cast black plastic, with silver trim, an easy way to tell the proto from the production black gun!
Yes I am thinking too that the Black gun proto that I have was originaly conceived for the Dune Rabban figure and Shown later with Tuska on the '85 catalog cause the Tuska’s color gun version was probably not fixed at this time.
Also, it was the same thing with Snowman and the D&DA shield by example, the Snowman’s weapons were not ready when the Snowman figure was advertissed the first times.

[FONT=Verdana]That is indeed a Dune weapon hardcopy you have there, the line was released in 1984 and featured in a 7 page spread in the 1984 LJN catalogue (along with Dungeons and Dragons, Indiana Jones etc), the figures released included Rabban who is pictured with and did indeed ship with the Harkonnen Rifle that was later re-used in the Thundercats line, it appeared with him in all the catalogue photography both in the UK and the US.[/FONT]

As a kid I always love the colors of the Tuska in my little ThunderCats leaflet I got with my Hachiman and it’s great to see that figure with those colors! Pure magic!! If you ever deceide to part with it, please let me know / PM me!!!
