I’ve never insulted him in the first place. It’s just such a cliché how american people think about series and/or characters. And yes, it is. You can tell it as non-american everytime how American try to play serious themes down in series/rl-conversations. It’s the same thing with all the “destroy”-phrases in series when somebody is going to die. How should that help that a children when it doesn’t know the consequences? Nobody gets simply destroyed like a toy, you will bite the dust.
Seriously, why do American use these watered-down phrases almost everytime I see something on TV? I never understood it at all, it’s like people want to talk about really important things but are just too afraid to say it directly because their fear the reactions? Of course you can’t put everybody in the same boat but I have my concerns about it. I do can understand some parts of it because the culture. However, you can’t hide the hard facts in life and it shouldn’t be played down for the childrens sake. That’s why I think the Meisaku Series are that well recieved outside of America. It’s a shame that most of the series never made it to you.

You seem to think that gradually teaching kids about the harsh realities of our world is a bad thing? I dunno, I rather have them taught about the hard facts of life in a more gradual manner so as to not be so traumatizing. With the way you say it, you think a 5 to 6 year old should be watching R-rated movies instead of cartoons designed for younger kids.
And so what if the word destroy is used alot in american cartoons, it means the same exact thing as kill for the most part.
Well, I have my roots from a huge message board where people are free to talk a bit off topic in the topics. Perhaps I need to focus more on the animated series because I’m used to my 50/50 writing style. And I don’t think it’s wrong to talk about it. If blackiecats or other admins/mods want me to let it be they will say it withing the next few posts. I don’t see any problem there at the moment.
It depends. It really depends on the stuff you’ll give the kids to watch. The Dog of Flanders, Perrine, Nils Holgersson, Tao Tao and other classics are prime examples how characters deals with deaths and losts. That’s the European/Japan-difference I would say. Perhaps you can add The Animals of Farthing Wood and Alfred J. Kwak to the list too. These are really well-made series which makes the big difference. And for myself, I watched them as child too.
But it’s still strange to hear it. Why not other words like “ending your life”? I think that sounds fair enough.
Kids emulate fictional heroes. Much easier tolerating a child saying “I will destroy you” over “I will kill you”, “I will take your life” etc. Cencors are pretty pathetic and people play it safe. Perhaps what you watch isn’t necessarily geared towards children or on a children’s network?
I’m finding this very amusing taking in to account on another T-C forum how some Europeans were complaining about how the censors over there censored violence out of the OS series. I guess the editting was horrible.
Regarding or North American knack (because our good friends to the North do this too) for keeping stories very simple an then allowing someone to assign a meaning to that said story. It comes from the Native American influences in North American culture. Where stories were kept simple so they were easy to remember around campfires and could be used tweaked to be a teaching tool as the situtation demanded.
Because the show is written for KIDS.
It’s a proven fact children don’t have the same grasp on lanuage that adults do. A 5 year old doesn’t grasp concepts or uses the same wording and context a 30 year old does.

Which annoys me when they try to ignore the word in children’s television. What is so bad about saying dead, die of died? That’s just stupid. You’re treating the kids like morons. ThunderCats is a cartoon whose primary audience is young children. That is something we have to accept, which is why you cannot be too nit picky with the tone and execution of the stories. If I wanted to see strong ‘adult’ themes I’d be watching a show such as ‘True Blood’ for example. I watch cartoons as I want to be entertained in a light hearted simple way. See that was my problem with the 200x He-Man cartoon… I found it aimed at Adult fans too much and it just wasn’t kiddy friendly enough.

Just a FYI, I’m not sure it was censored in Europe. Just the UK as they had a problem with Ninjas :rolleyes: Panthro’s Nunchukus action and TMNT suffered because of this (so it wasn’t the violence per say, but the Ninja content) Looking back now it was absolutely ridiculous what the BBC did!

Kids understand the concept differently at different ages. There’s numerous books written on the subject. But this link gives a quick run down on the different understanding of it by age.
Scroll down to the teenagers and you got to give their writers their due. They did their homework with how they have been writing Lion-o.
