I would doubt that. Cats with tails need their tails for balance. I’d guess he lost his tail in the same way he lost sight in his right eye and Grune lost one of his saber tooths.
He seems to be able to balance himself perfectly well without it now.
Now, but I wonder if he was staggering for a bit after he lost it.
Or maybe he still has it but keeps it tucked down inside his pants.
I like him with the chops but not the samurai ponytail. How would a Thunderan shave anyway? Their faces are already covered in fur…it would look kinda funny to have naked skin where the beard comes in. Or if they cut the beard with scissors, they’d have a perpetual five o’clock shadow. Though it works for Hugh Laurie (House) I guess… 
Threading or tweezing might work, but that’s painful.
Maybe Panthro was just too young to grow facial hair in the flashback.
Or maybe it’s like a Mr. T thing from The A Team movie and once Panthro gets his mojo back or whatever, he’ll shave it all off.
Personally I just figured that Panthro has been out on his own for a number of years as a survivalist. After awhile on your own you just tends to stop giving a toss and end up getting pretty shaggy looking. Ever stayed outdoors for awhile?
Except he had the hair before he left Thundera in the scene with young Tygra and Lion-O.
Oooh I had forgotten about that. 
I would have liked if they had shown how the hell they took down that gigantic warthog. Those 2 were an one man army, I think they could have taken down the entire lizard kingdom by themselves.
For Panthro’s tail I asked about it on the crew blog and they said keep watching so I’m assuming that they’ll show how he lost it in a future episode.

The point to Panthro’s looks was to step away from the pretty cookie cutter hero type. I wanted to convey a bad ass with faults. It’s easy to be a clean cut, good looking guy hero. This Panthro is imperfect, weathered, scared, broken. I like the fact Hulk Hogan has a receding hair line, does that make him weak? Like Hogan, his charm wins over his imperfections. Besides if you look, Panthro’s hair is reminiscent of a Samurai’s cut. This infers a sense of tradition and harbors strong personal values like honor, loyalty, and duty.
Traditionally, in Japanese film you may see hero’s with a toothpick in their mouth, this isn’t just to clean teeth. Often samurai would put it in their mouth to signify they we’re full so people wouldn’t offer food to them. Even if starving, they nobly did this so others who were suffering would eat. This is a round about way to say the haircut was part of that thinking.
Besides, Panthro was steeped in martial arts more than the others in the old version. So, the haircut is very samurai inspired to carry on the Asian influence."

Thanks for the info, balgus! I hadn’t thought of him as a samurai, but then last night I decided to watch the last 3 episodes again and I noticed for the first time he has a weird little ponytail thing in the back. So I just looked at my 6 inch figure and yup, he’s got it too. Makes sense though. They can keep the male pattern baldness, but I would really like them to get rid of the chops. Yikes!
Samurais serve their masters with loyalty to the death. Honor is more than just a concept it is a way of life for them. Panthro exhibits similar qualities for his king.
As far as the chops go, I don’t like them. They look good on hellboy, but he was designed with them. Classic Panthro to me wasn’t broken and didn’t need to be changed (except the upgrade in uniform). I am also not a fan of the scars. (maybe a chestswipe is fine, but he has too much.)
As far as the samurai look goes, he is a martial artist. I could be wrong but do samurais use nunchucks? I thought they were more on swords. I’m not trying to dislike modern panthro, but he is the only update I don’t like. From some of the pictures, he kind of has the shadowy stonefaced look of Frankensteins monster. He is a little too bulky to do any martial arts moves from my perspective. He has the size and looks like he would be more useful as a wrestler. Thundercats already have a Samurai friend. Does this mean we won’t have him?
Back to the topic, he should definetly chop the chops.
The chops are great! They make Panthro look older, wiser, and in charge. Keep them!
