Has anyone seen any previews for this new series premiering tonight on ABC? I think it looks like it’ll be really good. But then I love fantasy. 
I’ve been seeing previews for it the last few months, and banners and billboards for it were everywhere while Ocelli and I were in New York. We’ll definitely check it out, as we also have a bit of a soft spot for fairy tales. It does look both good and interesting…even if the basic premise a little similar to the comic book series Fables. IGN gave it a good write-up, too. It’ll be an interesting counterpoint to The Walking Dead at the very least!
There’s another fairy tale-inpsired series coming to NBC in another few weeks called Grimm. It’s a little like Supernatural. It’s about a detective who’s the latest in a long line of “Grimms”: hunters who defend the world from supernatural creatures. Only here, the cases and monsters are all based on folk and fairy tales.
It was pretty good, although a bit confusing.
I guess you might be referring to the nature of the boy, Henry. I was a little confused, too. At first, he says he’s the son Emma gave up for adoption. Then later he says he’s actually Jiminy Cricket (who we see in the flashback). Then later they say he’s Emma’s son again. Which is it? Is he really Jiminy, and somehow cast a spell on Emma to make her believe he’s her son so she’ll have a reason to want to stay in Storybrooke? That’s the only thing that would make sense.
Anyway, it’s good to see Robert Carlyle in something again, after Stargate Universe got unceremoniously dumped by Syfy. His Rumplestiltskin/Mr. Gold (heh, I saw what they did there) will be a good reason for me to want to tune in again.
The man they met in the street who was walking his dog when they got out of the car when they arrived in town - he was the man who Henry said was Jiminey Cricket.
What confused me:
If Henry knew his adopted mother was the evil queen, why didn’t he warn Emma not to say anything to her about the book?
Expecting all the children in town are under the curse, wouldn’t people notice Henry aging and his peers not?
How did the evil queen find out about Henry? I can’t imagine she wanted a child, she has to know who he really is, so how did she find out? She could only know he was Snow White and the Prince’s grandson by finding Emma - so why didn’t she try to get Emma who could have been adopted as well? Maybe Rumpelstilskin is the only one who knows the truth and kept from the queen Emma’s identity.
I’ll have to go back and look at that scene again. That exchange of dialogue went by pretty quick, so it was a little confusing to understand who they were talking about.
Since it’s only been the first episode, I’m sure that a lot of those questions will be answered eventually. I’m guessing the Queen must have found out about Henry at some point and adopted him in order to keep a close eye on him and maybe also use him as leverage. As for the book, in her arrogance she might believe it’s not even worth her concern. That or its magic is even more powerful than her own, and she can’t do anything with it even if she wanted to.
It was created by a couple of the writers who worked on Lost (Ed Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, who also wrote TRON: Legacy), and it shows in how the show seems to spend half its time in flashbacks to advance the plot. Only difference is unlike Lost, the flashbacks are actually more interesting than what’s going on in the present. Where in Lost the flashbacks just seemed to hold up the main story and unnecessarily pad things out.
You can review it, but the man in the street walking the dog is who the boy said was Jiminey Cricket. Another thing that also supports this is that something that the man walking the dog said, in the flashback where we saw Jiminey Cricket, I think standing on a table in a council session, he said the exact same thing the man in the street said.
The boy never claimed to be Jiminey Cricket or any of the characters, he only said he was her son. He may know that his teacher is Snow White, but I’m guessing he doesn’t know that she’s his grandmother or that he is actually a part of this whole story.
Another thing I wonder - what character is the sheriff supposed to be?

The Woodsman who rescued Little Red Riding Hood from the Big Bad Wolf (Funny how they made Red a Goth chick in this version! Though I think that might have been done before.)

If they’re really hewing close to Fables, he may even be the Big Bad Wolf himself! In the comic, the Wolf (who goes by the name Bigby) takes human form, turns to good and becomes the sheriff of Fabletown. And he and Snow White end up as a couple for the duration of the series.
Seriously, if you like this show, you’ll probably love [I]Fables[/I]. It’s been published for a decade now, and much of it has been collected in trades. Your local comic shop ought to have them. Rumor has it that Fables was actually in development as a TV series a few years ago. But when it got pitched to ABC, they turned it down, as they wanted something that was a bit more family-friendly, so they came up with Once Upon A Time instead.
I’ve just recently watched the pilot and found it quite interesting. I enjoyed it enough to give the next few episodes a chance and see if I’ll follow the show. Seems cool already though.
So far, this series has my interest and I love that both the flashbacks and the story are following an arc. 
Yeah after watching episode 2 and 3 I like how the episodes split into the fairy tale world and the real world but the two coincide(sp?) quite nicely and match up well. I’m enjoying this show so far and will watch the latest episode sometime today 
I didn’t think I was going to like Prince Charming (James) but I have to agree that I have now found him to be entirely charming. I am not impressed at all though with the choice for Cinderella’s prince.
And I could not believe in the last episode that Emma made agreed to Mr. Gold’s proposition that she would give him whatever he asked for without her knowing what he wanted in exchange for him not taking the baby of a young woman she just met. Emma is supposed to be street-wise, how was accepting that deal street-wise? Since Rumpelstilskin seems determined on wanting a child of his own, I can now see him collecting on that deal by asking her to give him Henry. Although as annoying as Henry can be…
