New ThunderCats series in 2011!

Just saw this for the first time, I’m excited about it. My only critique about the promo poster is that Lion-O looks too skinny…But it being ‘anime’ now I could get used to it depending on how smooth the animation is. I want new figs now

Even thought there are plain similarities at their external appearance, more than any other members of the team, because they are both Tigers, i never considered them as Brothers or Cousins, Tygra’s greeting was simply an act of showing affection, at least this is how i took it. But with these unexpected revealetions you never know…
At the episode Mumm-Ra lives Part 2,after the sword has been broken, Lion-o takes it to Bengali to fix it and he says emphatically “a Thunderian blacksmith forged this blade Lion-o, only another smith like me would know the secrets of its alloys”, so i always thought this sentence as a refererence to his father.
Which excludes Lion-o sharing a true familial bond and from what we heard by Lion-o’s (Larry Kenney’s!!) mouth that Tygra is actually a brother to Lion-o can’t be consequently akin to Bengali. Unless… i don’t know!

I LOVE it how complicated the things will be in 2011!! We are in for a lot of surprises:tygra:=:lionomad: ?

I hope the show doesn’t turn into a soap opera with so many family affairs!
LOL!!!

I was thinking, of course I’m just waking up and on my first cup of coffee. Perhaps Tygra isn’t blood related to Claudus, for all we know he could be a step son, or adopted, or Claudus could just be a father figure.

Most likely and it would be very interesting to see Tygra as the lost step son of Claudus

I personally can’t buy Lion-O and Tygra being blood relatives unless Claudus married a female noble of the Tygra clan of ThunderCats, then both sons would be ligers with stripes. However, it would be far more believable if Claudus adopted Tygra to be Lion-O’s younger brother. mcss aerocoupe is correct on that one, as in monarchies and aristocracies the ancient law of primagenitor (“first born”) always says it’s the eldest son who inherits the title of king, duke, earl, baron, or whatever the title is. And here’s the world’s most famous example: The Prince of Wales, the first-born son of the reigning King or Queen of England, is always first in line for the British throne unless he either dies or steps down for some reason, at which time the second-born son, the Duke of York, becomes the designated heir.

But Larry says it’s going to be Lion-O and Tygra in line for the Thunderian throne, so that’s how it’s going to be - heh-heh, whether I like it or not.

But if we’re going to have a soap-opera element to the new ThunderCats series, then why not have Bengali in there as Tygra’s long-lost younger brother? Then Lion-O would have two siblings instead of one, though it makes me wonder where WilyKat and WilyKit would fit in all of this, not to mention Snarf!

G

My hope is that lion-o and tygra are never told they are half bros. Typically in history, a king would marry his half sister to preserve their "divine"genetics, and the first born son of this union would be the heir. If tygra’s mom was not claudus’ half sister, tygra would be lower in the line of succession than lion-o, regardless of age. Since lion-o’s mom must have been the proper princess/half sister, the line of lion-o takes on the lordship. Tygra would be second in line since he was claudus’ son with a female outside of the royal line. I hope tygra doesn’t know who his dad really is, his character even seems like someone who did not have a father figure, hiding when threatened, succeptable to vice, etc.. perhaps claudus has a whole pride of illegitimate cubs all over thundera, spreading that royal seed all over the different clans.

Catspat,
I don’t recall Larry saying Lion-O and Tygra were both in line for the throne, but I may have missed it in the interview as I was so shocked for a couple minutes after heading him say Claudus is Tygra’s dad too.

As for the adopted possibility, why would Tygra be adopted to be a younger brother? He was full grown before Thundera blew up. Maybe Tygra was the child of other ThunderCats, who met an untimly fate, leaving him an orphan. Claudus may have taken it upon himself as Lord of the ThunderCats to “lead by example” and step up and care for this young ThunderCat who had no other family left.

Wow, there are just so many possibilities here.

Berbillion,
I doubt we’d have to worry about that. I seriously doubt a subplot like that would get through the censors, but then again, you wouldn’t have thought the first 5 minutes of Exodus woulda gotten through them back in the 80’s.

Larry didn’t mention anything about the throne ascension, as you said aero we can make so many speculations, one thing is starting to get clear though:the story of the original 130 episodes won’t be taken into consideration.
If Tygra is the forgotten or lost step son to Claudus then it makes better sense and can bridge the gap with more reasonable explanations. Like Claudu’s first woman was killed or murdered during Grune’s treason or at the war against the mutants of Plun-Darr when Claudus also lost his sight and before she passed away she gave birth to Tygra, Tygra was considered dead by the royal family and that is why no one searched for him. So after a few years and before the destruction of Thundera, Lord Claudus decides to be married again after assuming dead his first-born child, giving birth to the young Lion-o. Claudus was very old when Thundera was devastated so it stands to reason that Claudus at his early years could have been married more than once.

I like this idea. It takes nothing away from the original and gives the new cartoon an interesting direction. Not too sure about the long lost child thing though… I don’t think that’s needed and I think it’s fine for all to know who Tygra really is.

Aero,

Thanks for your response. What I said above was simply speculation. And, yes, Larry wouldn’t know anything about Lion-O and/or Tygra being heirs to the Thunderian crown; the series is only just out of the starting gate and the writers haven’t probably haven’t written that angle into it yet. What we both agree on here is the possibility of Tygra being an adopted younger son of Claudus for the very reason you gave - Tygra was an orphaned ThunderKitten whose ThunderCat parents died early. Perhaps Claudus, being a friend of those parents, had been named as godfather to Tygra at Tygra’s birth so Claudus could take charge of Tygra’s wellbeing if anything happened to the parents. Which would also explain why WilyKat and WilyKit were present in the first series - as orphaned ThunderKittens adopted by either Claudus or Jaga to give Lion-O a few much-needed siblings. Like you said, the possibilites are endless!

And I agree with you that Berbillion shouldn’t fret about Lion-O and Tygra possbility being half-sibs. I don’t see that happening - unless the writers decide to throw a curveball at the viewers, which has been known to happen in TV scriptwriting.

Also, I just heard some of the interview with Larry. I wonder if he told Peter Newman about the new Lion-O/Tygra angle? Peter would have been just as shocked as Larry, if not more!

all i can think about is all that cat secks going on.

The long lost child sounds a little bit melodramatic,i agree with you. Besides, Tygra was already considered as a “noble” when he was still in Thundera.
My main question is if Claudus was aware of Tygra being his son and rightfully heir to the throne as the older brother.

If there’s going to be a long-lost child aspect to the story, have Bengali as the long-lost kid brother of Tygra. It’ll be a bit more realistic that way, if still a tad soapy.

I think it gels, and nicely explains why Tygra was second in command. Being biological brothers won’t make me loose sleep, but Tygra being taken in by Claudus seems a tad bit more realistic since they are two different cats.

I go away for the weekend and come back to new posts :thumbsup::thumbsup:

Not really sure how this theory of Tygra beiing YOUNGER than Lion-O keeps circulating since by all depictions thus far he’s older. I know the series will be taken in a new direction, but I really highly doubt this is one of those directions. The theory that makes the most logical sense is that Tygra is adopted by Claudus after his parents, who were nobles, were killed. This still allows Lion-O to be the rightful heir to the throne, and weilder of the Eye of Thundera.

Not a chance. Bengali’s father was a blacksmith. So i can’t see this happening at least from the father side…but then again that would be kind of silly if they were half brothers from the mother side. It is a lame idea and besides there is no mention of any mothers in the old cartoon.

I don’t know if this has been mentioned before, but my theory on Tyra being Lion-O’s brother is he could very well be a half-brother.

Lion-O’s biological mother [lioness] could very well have passed away, with Claudus marrying another woman [tigress] and later having Tygra.

Theoretically speaking, this could happen. Though, out of my best recollection i don’t remember mentioning Lion-o’s mother during the 130 episodes or any references to mothers generally!

I don’t think this can happen. Anyone feel free to correct me if I’m wrong as I’m not an expert on this, but if Tygra is a noble, he would have to be so by blood line. I don’t think if Prince Charles adopted a commoner child, that that child would be considered noble or be given any title or right to ascension. Also I believe any blood relation to Claudus would put him (being older than Lion-O) as the next Lord of the Thundercats, especially if that bloodline is through Claudus and not Lion-O’s mother (which I believe to be the case since I don’t think we have proof otherwise). This is why I think the scenario of Tygra being noble by birth, but not of the most royal blood line (Claudus) yet being adopted by Claudus and being Lion-O’s “brother” in that way would not interfere with Lion-O’s right to being the next Lord of the Thundercats.

That and the fact that Tygra bears NO resemblance to Lion-O physically, or to a lion leads me to believe that he is a pure member of his tiger clan, and thus of no blood relation. I would think any blood relation to Claudus, and he would have to share some sort of noticeable physical trait w/ Lion-O or Claudus (furless arms, more head hair to appear mane like but still with tiger stripes, or perhaps red hair with stripes instead of orange)

But of course, maybe Thundarians have completely different rules than the monarchies of old did here on 1st Earth :eek::eek:
Merged Post:

In addition to what I just said earlier another reason I can’t see this happening is because, again as I’ve stated before in every depiction of them both Tygra is older. He’s older in the series, and as far as I know he’s older in the comics. It would be impossible for Claudus to have married Lion-O’s mother first, her passing away, and then marrying Tygra’s mother and having Tygra afterwards. I don’t think WB would drastically change their ages to re-order who is older between the two. But who knows at this point, I could be wrong :rolleyes::rolleyes: (that isn’t at you, that is at WB if they decided to go this route as it wouldn’t be faithful to the original series).

Also the only way this could work is if Claudus married Tygra’s mother first, they had Tygra, and then something happened and he married the mother of Lion-O later. Again I find holes in this scenario above that (unless I’m wrong) also make this not likely.

Your logic is correct Grune_ I agree.

Let’s get some things straight taking into account what we know so far from the original 130 episodes and the latest updates:

1)Tygra was already considered as a noble Thunderian by the time he was in Old Thundera,at least this is how Claudus referes to all of the team at the episode “Return to Thundera”.

2)Lion-o is much younger than Tygra, contradicting the theory of the older male child to be the rightful successor to the throne.
Consequently, three acceptable reasons explain why Lion-o is the Lord of the Thundercats: a) Tygra wasn’t recognized as Claudus legit son back in Old Thundera for unknown causes. b)Tygra was simply brother to Lion-o from the mother side, so the heir goes to Claudu’s first born and only son,Lion-o.
c) Hereditary in Thundera doesn’t follow the same rules as in Earth.

  1. Most likely and judging by what we have seen at the original show, there are no allusions and Tygra doesn’t know anything of his familial bond to Lion-o.This is a very basic point.

  2. We have no mentions of “mothers” generally in the old show. However, keep in mind there are no mentions suggesting that Lion-o is Claudu’s one and only son either.

5)Even before Lion-o’s sudden aging to adulthood because of the capsule malfunction it was a foregone conclusion that he will be the Next Lord of Thundercats, this is what Jaga tells him inside the ship upon leaving Thundera.
From day one we knew LIon-o’s destiny but the latest news pave the way for unexpected revelation..

6)This might sound a bit naive but it is a fact. Claudus was blinded during the war against the mutants of Plun-Darr which reasonably took place a long time ago, so maybe he wouldn’t be able to distinguish clearly even by the voice a lost or forgotten son…and of course i am saying about Tygra.

7)In the episode “All thast Glitters” Lion-o does indeed instruct Tygra to take up the mantle of leadership as the Next Lord if he doesn’t come back but this statement has nothing to do with any implication as being relatives.

  1. Jaga who was an adviser and protector of the Lord’s family, he also wielded the sword of omens doesn’t hint anything about Tygra being close to Lion-o and we shouldn’t forget that Jaga is around Claudu’s age meaning he has witnessed a large part of Thundera’s history and seen many things too.
