It works rather well, I think. Much better than the cookie cutter style music of the new show that sounds copied from star wars and star trek.
That did work did you see the other new Toon old music.
I really wish they could’ve gotten the rights for more of the old songs. They wouldn’t have to play them constantly, but just sprinkling them around at the right moments would go a long way. They should really be using the theme song a bit more often. They DO have the rights to that one. And I can only remember a couple times that it’s been used in the NS (not including the 5 second intro).
There’s just something really memorable and exciting about the old music. Trying to think back, I can’t remember any of the music from the NS, but I can remember almost all of it from the OS. And when I just watched the NS this morning and haven’t watched any of the OS in months, that’s saying something.
It’s good, i just dont think it FITS.
And the stuff you DO remember, the petalar song, for instance, sounds like it was ripped directly from Star Trek Generations. The Nexus theme song in particular ('Go and be with your mother), where Picard sends off his ‘son’ and goes with Guinan. All the music in the new show just sounds, bland, for lack of a better word.
Where as each tune in the original had a beat to it that was recognizable, distinct, and you could dance to it ;o)
It doesn’t fit great but it’s still more atmospheric than the new, generic BGM.
if they paid so much money for the music, that’s why one keeps the same tune, but does remixes. sort of like how they started off revenge of the sith with a great remix. simple, yet instantly recognizable…
As you say, the new shows music is generic at best.
I think the New Show’s music sounds fine. The problem though is that they are playing against what was done in the 80s, as a lot of shows do now. In the 80s, it was very “theme” based with recognizable tunes to associate with characters and situations. Thundercats did it. He-Man did it. Transformers did it. GI Joe did it. Ninja Turtles did it. It was pretty much all across the board.
Nowadays that style is viewed as lazy as they are just using the same tracks over and over again in every episode. I guess it sort of like just plugging the tunes into the formula of the show, and that is a fair criticism. Now the desire is to take a more cinematic approach and trying to make every episode stand out by giving every one its own unique musical score. Like I said, the new series’ music sounds good to me. A good example would be in this past episode. The music during the Lion-O/Ratar-O fight was great.
However, what it lacks is that classical familiarity that the old show did. We heard the old tunes over and over again, so they just got implanted in my brain, and they all sounded great, so its only natural that we would love them. Mumm-Ra’s theme was a staple of the character and added to the atmosphere every time he was on screen. It felt appropriate for him to have that music track in every episode.
With the new show, because the music is different for pretty much every episode (except for the occasional classic T-Cats riff and a theme for Mumm-Ra, I don’t think anything has been repeated) we can’t get as attached to the music or commit it to memory like we did back in the day.
As correct as you are I don’t think it’s better at all to have this modern approach, lazy or not, the atmospheric boost we get from that style is well worth it IMO.
