New Mortal Kombat in 2011

I plugged TCL over at my favorite Mortal Kombat site, and figured I would do the same over here for Mortal Kombat.

Not sure what the cross over is of Thundercats and Mortal Kombat fans, but I suspect its probably pretty high. Mortal Kombat was my favorite fighter growing up as a kid (even though Street Fighter II had a much bigger impact and basically started the whole fighter scene as we know it, Mortal Kombat holds #1 spot for many fans of the fighting game community).

Warner Brothers acquired the then bankrupt development team of Midway responsible for the Mortal Kombat games, and renamed it Netherealm Studios (a nod to the MK mythology). Later this year Netherealm Studios will be releasing the first ever Mortal Kombat game since being acquired by Warner Bros, and it looks AWESOME.

The game is a going back to the roots of sorts, basically a nod to fans of the original arcade scene, as it will be a “What if” retelling of the events taking place throughout the first three Mortal Kombat games. Raiden has sent a mental message back through time to himself right before the start of the first Mortal Kombat in an attempt to change the course of events leading to Shao Kahn about to destroy him.

Almost every character you can think of from the first three games is making a return, and in a slight nod to the originals they have abandoned the 3D take on the games from MK4 onward for a 2.5D approach to this one (3D models on a 2D plane). So, its basically back to the 2D fighting action that we’ve seen Capcom revert to for Street Fighter 4, that fighting fans have loved.

Note - we actually have a trmk.org moderator (The Realm of Mortal Kombat) here as a member on TCL!! I’ll leave it up to that person to reveal themselves or not, but its a great community there as well. I post under the same name there if anyone is interested.

The new Mortal Kombat drops April 19th, so it’ll be a precursor to the Thundercats launch later this year. Its a great year to be a fan of Mortal Kombat and Thundercats, and looking like a banner year all around for Warner Bros.

If this thread takes off, maybe we can get a TCL tournament together if people want to share their PSN gamer tags closer to when the game launches.

I post Thundercats updates in a Thundercats thread over at trmk.org, and (unless the above moderator wants to be the one to do it as I won’t step on their toes) I will post Mortal Kombat updates here for anyone interested.

Lots of news coming out about old, classic stuff. There is a new Voltron game coming out apparently, but I won’t hijack this tread about it.

Someone else can organize an XBL tourny. I’m getting it for PS3, so if anybody else on here is purchasing for that system, that’s the one I’d be getting it together for.

Buuuuut, that all depends on anyone on here posting they’re getting it. If the thread doesn’t get some posts of buyers, then there won’t be one :stuck_out_tongue:

Nice to see another gamer on here! I’m also an MK fan, and I’m looking forward to the new game as well. And yes, I also liked MK Vs. DCU as well, although purists cried foul about the watering-down of the Fatalities (or “Brutalities” as they were called), but I can see why they did that. If it means I can have Batman, Flash, Green Lantern and the Joker in the same game as Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden and Liu Kang, I’m willing to go along with it.

I like the whole thing of it suddenly going into X-Ray mode to highlight a particularly vicious punch. Kind of reminds me of a movie that was out years ago that did the same thing. I think it might have been Romeo Must Die or Exit Wounds, but I’m not sure.

I’d also be interested in an XBL tournament, so once we all get the game, I’m up for it. :cool:

I am so excited for this game. I literally had dreams of a new MK game like this years before they did MK deception and the other modern MK games. I love how they returned to their darker and 2D roots.

Pretty much everyone from MK1-3 from Liu Kang to Noob Saibot have been confirmed for the game (with a few exceptions: Kabal, Sheeva, Human or Robo Smoke, Rain).

Also a lot of classic stages have been shown.

IMO its shaping up to be the best Mortal Kombat since MK II, and that’s saying something.

I’ve yet to see a PS3 response yet, but anyone who wants to take on the XBL tourney feel free to use the thread to do so.

Have you all seen the MK-Rebirth trailer/film pitch made to raise funds for a feature to Hollywood studios? Really nicely shot and looks very dark.

Just watched it, pretty cool. Kind of makes me think of Christopher Nolan’s take on Batman what with the more realistic backgrounds for some of the characters instead of the Fantasy ones we’re used to. Though I still tend to prefer the Outworld and all of that.

Nice cameo by Jeri Ryan as Sonya Blade, too. :cool:
