Happy belated Valentine’s Day! Hope everyone had fun with their significant others! It’s that time again. Time for the latest batch of Blu-Ray and DVD releases. And boy do we have a lot this week!
Rum Diary- This sort of sequel to Johnny Depp’s cult hit Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas that chronicles the further exploits of Hunter S. Thompson. Probably won’t be nearly as beloved as the previous film, but it still got good reviews.
The Dead- A pretty good zombie movie I’ve been hearing about lately. Don’t know much about it. But if you’re a zombie movie afcionado like me, this is probably worth checking out.
All Quiet on the Western Front- The classic war movie available for the first time on Blu-Ray.
The Human Centipede 2 (Full Sequence)- Why? Dear god, why?
Dragon Age: Redemption- An anime based on Bioware’s Dragon Age RPGs, featuring Felicia Day playing her elf assassin character. That alone is enough for me to want to see this.
Beavis & Butthead, Vol. 4- “Uhh-huh-huh. Huh-huh-huh. This sucks! Change it!” “Heh-heh. Mm-heh-heh. Shut up asswipe! It’s cool!”
Doctor Who: The Doctor, The Widow and the Wardrobe- The latest of the the Doctor Who Christmas specials, and so far the best IMO.
Doctor Who: The Caves of Androzani- Peter Davison’s swan song as the Fifth Doctor finally comes to DVD.
Doctor Who: The Sensorites- A William Hartnell First Doctor adventure. The Doctor, Ian, Barbara and Susan land on a spaceship with it’s human crew in suspended animation. But they soon find the ship is being held by a mysterious alien race called the Sensorites, and the Doctor and his companions must try and ascertain their true motives.
Wait, Rum Diary is another film based on Hunter S. Thompson? Hmm, I’ll give that one a shot.
The Human Centipede 2, I’ve been curious about the first film honestly just to how sick it is. Besides, it can’t be any worse than A Serbian Film can it?
Doctor Who: The Doctor, The Widow, The Wardrobe, a buy for Christmas. To the point where I’ll be saving a watch for December.
Careful what you wish for. Some things just can’t be unseen. I saw the first movie out of morbid curiosity, just to report back to my friends about it so they wouldn’t have to see it. I felt like I took a bullet for them. Took me some months before I could finally come to terms with the fact this movie existed. When I heard about what the second movie was like, I wasn’t even the slightest bit interested. “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me” and all that.
I’ll agree that I’m sure there are worse movies to sit through, though. A Serbian Film, which you mentioned comes to mind. As does Salo.
Thanks for the warning, I’m thankful for that really. Just that I say I’ve been curious about The Human Centipede is that I very much survived Hostel without gagging. But I imagine A Serbian Film will be the one to finally break me. I’ve read what’s in it and I’m not interested in giving money to that movie.
The first one was pretty twisted and very sick but it does not top, and I repeat it does not top Salo. Salo is by far the MOST disgusting movie you will ever see. Many people praise it for its artistic value and the deep meaning it has concerning humanity but if you are weak in the stomach the Salo will chew you up and spit you out. You’ll be left with a feeling as if youve been dragged through crap several times and drug through it over and over again
Ahhh so youve seen Salo…I cant fathom anything worse than that, even the first Human Centipede. I think Human Centipede is mild compared to Salo
I haven’t seen Salo, but I’ve read about it and know enough of it to know it’s not something I’m itching to see anytime soon. (For those who don’t know, it’s a loose adaptation of the book The 120 Days of Sodom by the Marquis de Sade). Like Lynxana, even I don’t think I have enough intestinal fortitude to see it. And I’ve got a dirty mind myself!
Oh, getting a little back on topic, I forgot to mention this one…
The Lorax- They’re probably releasing this in anticipation of the new animated movie coming next month. But somehow I think this version, which was originally a TV special made in 1972, is probably a lot more faithful.
I’m kind of ambivalent about these recent Dr. Seuss adaptations. I saw Horton Hears a Who and thought it was decent. But some things just didn’t fit in. I mean, did they really have to launch into a rendition of REO Speedwagon’s “I Can’t Fight This Feeling” towards the end?
Ive seen my share of nasties as they call them in the UK. Cannibal Holocaust, cannibal Ferox, Caligula, and yes I have sat through the entire Salo trainwreck and I must say that Human Centipede is pretty rough but rather mild compared to some of the other movies.
Im not so sure i want to sit through Human Centipede 2 and A Serbia Film. Theyre all in the same category as enjoying watching a trainwreck or a nasty car accident as it happens. You know you dont want to watch it but you do anyways and when you do it feels like youve been dragged through crap over and over again and you feel like the guiltiest and dirtiest person in the world.
I may eventually end up watching Human Centipede 2 and A Serbian Film, but then again the movies seem to have one clear distinction from salo and it is that Salo while being a very disturbing and sick movie, was performed more artistically while HC 1 and 2 and A Serbian Film seem to just celebrate violence and torture.
Another movie that some may enjoy and it is pretty twisted but you absolutely cheer for the character at the end is both the original I Spit on Your Grave and the remake.
I’m not a fan of the live action Seuss movies, both The Grinch and The Cat in the Hat missed the point of their respective original material and just feel juvinile. Like they wanted to be mature for the adult audiences but they went the wrong way with it. The big screen animated adaptations so far like Horton just seem well recieved and to me, Dr. Seuss just works better in animation because there are no limitations. I mean the animation in The Lorax is simply beautiful. It’s the man’s illustrations being put to life.
So I found Human Centipede 2 locally on Blu-Ray for less than $15 and decided to buy it. Plenty of gore to start off with and the whole movie with a black and white tone gave it somewhat of an artistic view. That was about the extent of it and truthfully I thought the movie was crap compared to the first one. I watched the movie about 3/4 of the way through and decided to turn it off…not because it was disturbing because truthfully I thought the first one was much better made and had more suspense to it but because the movie really was a huge waste of $15. A Serbian Film sounds like a more disturbing movie and maybe just maybe worth giving a look.
Human Centipede 2 gets 2 stars from me only because of the black and white theme of the movie. Its a rental and not a buy type of movie. Hell dont even rent it…download it
That seems to be the general consensus among people I know who’ve seen it. The first THC film, disturbing as it is, at least has some artistic merit. It’s a difficult movie to defend, but it does have a few points to make. THC 2, though you really can’t defend. And I think Tom Six just wanted to make a movie for the sake of shocking people. He might have been trying to answer critics with this movie who were saying how the first one would inspire psychos to try and do the same thing, and point out how absurd that whole argument is. But it’s been done before in other movies,and better. [I]Fade to Black[/I] comes to mind as a good example.
