I think it is just displayed this way so you can see that the claw shield is removable and not sculpted directly on his arm.
Im beyond excited for this, the figures that have been shown to us look fantastic. I personally like the claw shield, it beats the orange furry LJN one and the Mezco and that let me not get started on the bandai claw shield.I feel sometimes collectors take toy collecting too serious. IMO these are the best looking Thundercats figures I’ve even seen, can’t wait to own them.
No, the claw shield in the cartoon was smooth and metallic. Lion-O used it multiple times to show Mumm-Ra his reflection.

Much like in MOTUC you will find 4H will sculpt in references to certain figures regardless of what fans think.
Icarius/Flip Shot does not look anything like the character instead they decided to make him look like Val Kilmer…
Yeah, that’s certainly true. I myself do not have a problem with that, I can wait. But i can see other people preffering 12 figures a year. And from a business standpoint it certainly makes more sense.. I’ll wait and see how this first sub goes. If it goes relatively smooth and the QC doesnt disappoint, I might just be in for a 12 figure sub.

Not sure. It’s really odd that they bothered making an un-helmeted head for him if they didn’t have the rights. Even more odd why they chose to make him look like Val Kilmer.

I know it’s reflective in the show but, I mean it looks like it has a “fur” type design on it. Seriously think you are grasping at straws to hate this line Magikz. Is that a deal breaker that it isn’t reflective? And what are they gonna use, vac metal that will chip off and flake in a year??
Given what I’ve seen of the Mattel line, I just don’t understand why anyone would prefer it over Mezco.

So you just want a shiny gold paint scheme just like a figure we already got? If that’s what you want then you already got the figure you needed. I like the Bandai Lion-o I’m not gonna knock it but Magikz wants cartoon accurate and I’m trying to see my Bandai Mumm-Ra’s reflection in the Bandai claw shield and I can’t see poo. I’m also not trying to argue the reflective nature of the claw shield. All I’m saying is that the shield thing isn’t something to get all riled up about. Yes the line is based on the cartoon but there will be some call backs to LJN. To me that’s not a bad thing.
Articulation, accessories, accuracy, size and space limitations and given the fact that we are getting more figures in 6 months than we’ve gotten in 6 years from Mezco I’m willing to keep my eyes on Mattel to see what they come up with. I’m a fan of the Mezco line too but I feel that Mattel will quickly surpass them.
That Lion-O looks awful to me, it doesn’t even look like him. Also, these are statues, not action figures.
Sorry, Joa-O but you are wrong. These Mezco figures are action figures with seven points of articulation, not statues.
While I think Lion-O looks like a great figure I think his proportions are a bit off. His head looks a bit big and he is quite squat compared to his cartoon self. Here’s a pic with the head shrunk just a bit and the legs lengthened.

Regarding the claw sheild, I would be much happier if the figure came with a smooth sheild like the one Wilycub mocked up with the shots released earlier. It’s cartoon accurate and looks better all around.

Your modifications, while small, make a huge improvement in the figure, IMHO. Lion-O looks much better with the changes that you have made. I think it’s because the Mattel figure hasn’t gone with the standard 8-head superhero height. Their figure is about 6 and a half heads tall and hence looks short stocky.

I find it very surprising when some fans of ThunderCats claim that the Claw Shield was “always furry” in the cartoons. 
It was NEVER made of fur! Period. Even someone who is not a fan of ThunderCats can attest to that simply by watching the cartoon. It was made of some metallic, shiny material, to act as a shield, to repel blows. It was extremely tough and durable (remember how Lion-O used it to trip up the hulking robot Burnout in “Mandora: The Evil Chaser”. It also has a highly reflective surface, hence Lion-O often employed it to show Mumm-Ra his reflection.
Mezco decided to go with their own interpretation and made the Claw Shield furry, and that is what Mattel are doing as well. If you like the furry look, that is totally fine, but trying to defend Mattel’s action by changing the facts is just silly. Perhaps you guys are thinking about Han’s Claw from “Enter the Dragon”!

These two alterations have made him look a lot better.
I wonder if Lion-O will have a new chest piece or if Mattel will use the standard body armour over the standard body like New Adventures Skeletor.
