New 6" Classic toy line from Mattel!

Great lineup.

Now we just have to wait for mattycollector to confirm what the packaging will look like.
I really hope its the same look as the original LJN figures

I’m hoping we see at least drawings/prototypes of packaging at Toy Fair this month!

I know there are a lot of nitpicks that we can do on these figures but man, seeing that line-up has got to have even the pickiest fan smile at how awesome they look. I for one am not expecting beat for beat cartoon accurate sculpts. It was said early on and you can see clearly with MOTU that we are getting heavy cartoon inspiration with the Horseman’s slight spin. In the podcast Eric Treadaway even talks about how full cartoon accuracy is almost impossible since so many cartoonists worked on the show and each frame has slight differences. Either way though I am blown away by what we are getting and so happy to see Mumm-ra. He was actually the figure I was most worried about them getting to look right. His mummy form is my favorite of his incarnations and I have to say I’m stoked. He looks so good!!

Classics did not emulate the original Masters of the Universe packaging, so I do not suspect ThunderCats will either.

I agree, they will probably do something different.

Wow, they’re five for five with me. Loving that Mumm-Ra!

That Mumm-ra is a MUST HAVE for every collector! :thumbsup

I think they all look great! I’ve waited a long time for this line, I hope it goes very far!

The root of these issues come from the main concept of this line. It’s based on the MOTUC Buck, drawing inspiration from the MOTUC aesthetic. That right there gives you a buffed Jackalman, an off-looking Lion-O, a muscular and older looking Pumyra, etc. Its a line made by MOTU fans with a casual interest in Thundercats, FOR MOTU fans that have a casual interest in Thundercats. It’s a bit dissapointing for me but hey, maybe that was the right call business wise.

It’s not a proper Thundercats line but rather a MOTUC companion line.

I don’t understand this seeminly popular way of thinking. Obviously the Cats look differ from episode to episode and from frame to frame, but every animator that worked on the show drew inspiration from the character model guide that was (I believe) part of the series bible. Therefore, when creating merchandise, in this case action figures, the basis should be that same guide! Episodes should be referenced for whatever is not present/visible on the guide or for selecting accesories and the like.

I mean it’s as if Playmates tried to convince us that in the original TMNT toon Raphael wore blue, based on this frame:

Full cartoon accuracy may be almost impossible but just give it a try at least. Take a page from DCC’s Batman Animated line, to name an example.

Apparently that wasn’t deliberate. If I remember correctly, MOTUC wasn’t even going to have proper packaging but was going to be distributed in plastic bags. Toyguru at the last minute asked the Graphic Design department to improvise a package design (for that same day i think). Take this story with a truckload of salt.
So who knows, maybe we’ll see some LJN type packaging. You know which packaging was spot on perfect? The one from the TCas Classics line from Bandai (well, except maybe for the updated character art)

It would have been a bit off as Lizardman has hairless limbs but I agree that those parts would probably work on Jackalman.

Maybe I am easy to please but I am completely geeked about these figures even if we see no further improvements. I have waited so long for a classics based line and so far this has exceeded my expectations!

I’m not going to bash anyone’s feelings on what they want in a Thundercats line. I just know from my own experience in collecting I always try to manage my expectations. Are there going to be things I’d change about some of these figures as they are released, absolutely but those changes are not going to ruin the line for me. Jackalman’s size doesn’t bother me at all. The MOTU bucks are not outrageously buff where it makes him look odd to me. The idea to go with the furry claw shield homage to the LJN toy I think is cool. I’m hoping for a mix of toon and LJN just like the addition of the Mumm-ra’s staff. As far as the toon variation because of the animators I think it’s more as in trying to translate details like head sizes and and other proportions than mistakes in color. Panthro’s head is a subject of some fans concerns but his head and neck size changes from scene to scene. Bottom line is no toy line is going to hit the nail on the head for every fan. I collect a lot of Hot Toys which are supposed to be the pinnacle of accurate and realistic sculpts and even they miss the mark from time to time.

Dude I like the stuff and see no need to argue about it. I’m not going to force myself to like something for the hell of it. You aren’t into it and that’s cool. I just don’t agree with your criticism. Maybe when I get them in hand I’ll agree with you but from where I’m at they look great and I’m excited to get them.

I’m still on the fence about the line. I need to see the packaging. I personally prefer the Mezco line. However, if Mattel comes through on the packaging it might be a good collection to have mint on card.

The big question, will the first wave sell enough to keep going?

I’m happy to have my subscription and these are without doubt the best representations of these characters in this scale ever offered. That said I can see room improvement in all of them. Seeing how cartoon accurate these guys have gotten their new Filmation figs of He-man/Skeletor/Beastman, I know they could be spot on. Hopefully there will be some minor tweaks before release.

I wouldn’t mind some minor tweaks, but I would be happy with them as is too. Especially the sizes…I like the MOTU size bucks, especially for females. Too many lines make females too thin and spindly looking, MOTU females are the perfect size (to me). Jackalman looks perfect.

Mumm-ra is beyond all expectations…I think he alone will sell the sub. So excited for these and this line. I wish they would do a full 12 month sub next year, but I think Mattel aid they may stick with the mini-sub option (6 + exclusive…maybe 2 deluxe items/figures). I want Luna-taksand other never done characters!

Ure looking tooooo much into it…yes a jackal is smaller than a lion, this is also a fantasy cartoon and pretty much nothing in it can be held to real life expectations and comparisons… If u dislike them so much…simply dont buy them…
