I always liked the Ever Living… but I think in the second half of the OS second season (you know, when the search for the Treasure of Thudera started) they kind of ruined the character, making him more kid-appealable.
Yeah he became kinda like the cranky old man that lived down the street with only his dog for companionship there in the second season. Not nearly as menacing once the Ancient Spirits of Evil started slapping him around.
Fortunately he seems suitably sinister and even Machiavellian in his current incarnation. This new techno-savvy Mumm-Ra is not your father’s Mumm-Ra. His whole pyramid looks like it came through the Stargate or something. Of course Mumm-Ra is the one who supplies the weaponry to General S-s-slithe and the lizard armies.
He also possesses the Dark Sword of Plundarr which seems to be a near match for the Sword of Omens. This would suggest that they were made by the same individual. Mumm-Ra perhaps? Remains to be seen.

Mumm-Ra referring to the Sword of Omens/ Plundarr? On a side note Mumm-Ra seems to have developed very bat-like/impish looking facial features.
Yeah, I’m actually hoping we’ll actually get into Mumm-Ra’s past in this series and get to know his motives and how he turned out the way he did. I don’t want him to be redeemable or anything like that but see how he became like he did would definately make him a better villain I think.
It could be some form of tech for all we know. It has a very techno look to it. Not at all like the more organic bubbling cauldron from the old show.

Following a live-action TV career in the 1950s and '60s, Hammond transitioned into voice acting later in his life, and is easily most famous for his role as the villainous Mumm-Ra on ThunderCats. He provided many other voices for ThunderCats as well, along with characters in Silverhawks, The Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers and Star Blazers.
I was wondering what was Mumra before he was dead/a mummy. I was thinkng wouldn’t it be cool if in fact he was himself a thundercat when he was alive. What is his actual story, what was he?
Star Blazers is one of my all-time favorite shows! So that’s pretty cool to know he was involved in that. I looked him up on IMDB, but they don’t list exactly which part he played, only listing him as “Voice.” I’m guessing though that he may have played some of the more deeper-voiced characters, like Sgt. Knox or Prince Zordar.
He also worked on another favorite show of mine, Ultraman, along with Peter Fernandez of Speed Racer fame. Not sure which character’s voice he did on that one either. I want to guess Capt. Mura, or maybe even Arashi. And apparently he worked on Space Giants, too! Another cool Japanese import show from the '60s
Yeah Earl Hammond was actually quite a prolific voice over actor and his Mumm-Ra was one of my favorite voice overs ever so I just wanted to highlight the man’s career.
That’s one thing I don’t think they do enough on this board which is pay some homage to the wonderful actors who brought this show to life.

In the new series that has yet to be revealed so we can only theorize. I like the idea of Mumm-Ra being an ancient Thundarian though. He almost seems to have bat-like features in TNS so perhaps he is a from a race of bats or is demonic in nature.
In TOS Mumm-Ra was an incredibly ancient being who had survived for many thousands of years. His knowledge and power were derived from the Ancient Spirits of Evil. These malevolent spirits used Mumm-Ra as their everliving agent of evil in their relentless assault to stamp out any and all goodness and purity thus allowing evil to dominate all.
It was revealed that Third Earth was actually our Earth in the far flung future. This would suggest that Mumm-Ra in life was probably a powerful ancient Egyptian priest or possibly a pharaoh (ancient Egyptian king) in life. My thinking is that he was a demonic ancient priest who made a bargain with the Ancient Spirits of Evil. This ensured his longevity, access to arcane knowledge, and dark powers including being able to assume any form.
Mumm-Ra’s main weaknesses in TOS during the first season was that he was only able to leave the pyramid for short periods of time before having to come back to rest and recharge. Also he was unable to withstand the horror of his own evil reflection. This was something that was actually remedied when he was destroyed by the Star of Thundera and later revived again by the ASOE.
I’d like Mumm-Ra to be an ancient Mutant himself (Bat Mutant is cool) who served the 4 ancient Mutant Kings that ruled the land of Plun-Darr. The kings spirits were transferred into statues of them and their magic keeps their ‘Warrior’ and link to the living world, Mumm-Ra, alive. Mutant soldiers could have built the pyramid in preparation for Mutants Kings taking their spirit form.
Making Mumm-Ra a Thunderian is a total cop out to me and is just too easy and predictable. We already have one Thunderian gone bad with Grune. We don’t need another!
Yeah that’s kind of what I had envisioned as well. I guess I am just not jiving when it comes to the established lore and terminogies of the new show. I was trying to say that I felt like that Mumm-Ra IS most definately from a different species. In the show Thunderians are all the cat like subjects of the Kingdom of Thundera. But there also many other animal races. General S-s-slithe and the lizard armies are but one race of them. No doubts we will be running into generals Monkian, Jackalman and hopefully old Vultureman as well. So having Mumm-Ra come from a race of bat Mutants is plausible. He could also simply be demonic in origin/nature a corrupted Thunderian if you will. Or perhaps extra terrestrial?
That had always been my theory as to who and what Mumm-Ra was as well. A shame they never went into his origins. One of the big plot points in the story Ocelli and I were coming up with was that Mumm-Ra was one of a line of “champions” that ASOE used to fight on their behalf. It turned out that the ASOE and ASOG (Ancient Spirits of Goodness) could not fight each other directly, and so used champions to fight their battles for them by proxy. The Thundercats were intended to be the ASOG’s, but the destruction of Thundera threw a monkey wrench into those plans, forcing the two to encounter one another much earlier than intended. After Mumm-Ra’s demise (told in a flashback/dream sequence at the very beginning) the ASOE choose Slithor to be their next champion.
It was never confirmed that Third Earth was our Earth in the far future. But that was the same conjecture we made (the show “Life After People” showed how all traces of human civilzation could be easily wiped out within 1,000 years). We figured a combination of natural disasters and environmental collapse forced most of the population to flee Earth en masse. They settled in the Epsilon Eridani system, eventually founding an empire we called the Terran Commonwealth, and that’s where Mandora and her people came from.
Others weren’t so lucky and had to take their chances on Earth. We speculated the Warrior Maidens were descendants of these survivors.
As for the new Mumm-Ra, it’ll be very interesting to see what his origins are. I’m betting on an extraterrestrial origin (maybe even having come from our own Earth), which would also tie in nicely with the whole “ancient astronauts” angle. Like I said in the “Old Friends” thread, it would be interesting if it turned out his powers were actually derived from science rather than magic, making for a very interesting demonstration of Clarke’s Law!
It was never officially confirmed that Third Earth was our Earth, but on at least one episode they showed a Globe of Third Earth on the monitor in Cat’s Lair and the land masses were the same shapes as our continents.
Y’know, this has nothing to do with Mumm-Ra really, but in your earlier post you mentioned Monkian, Jackalman and Vultureman.
I gotta say this, Monkian I’m fine with, but Jackalman? Vultureman? Those aren’t names. They’re the animal type with man after it.
Slithe is a name. Those are not. If you ask me they deserve real names in this new show.
