Because we’ve just had Thanksgiving, this week’s film is “Planes, Trains And Automobiles”, chosen by Mark M.
Remember any ideas for films to discuss are most welcome, and should be made on the Movie Club Introduction thread (the sticky one).
Just a friendly reminder to everyone that, whilst fans are obviously welcome to passionately discuss and give their views on these episodes, please remember to keep things on a friendly footing and respect your fellow posters.
Also, please do not post where or how to find the full movie online. And do not post asking others to PM it to you. You are however allowed to watch the movie in whatever manner you want.
Planes, Trains and Automobiles is one of my favourite movies to watch around Thanksgiving and Christmas.
In my opinion it is one of Steve Martin and John Candy’s best movies.
I enjoyed the various cameo appearances from Kevin Bacon and William Windon.
Well, I saw it for the first time the other day, and thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s one of those films where the main characters are stuck together for so long that we get to properly know them. They didn’t choose to travel together, they were two strangers who just got stuck with each other repeatedly - more so than would plausibly happen in real life perhaps - until they just accepted that they were meant to make their journey together. And they both learned a bit about themselves, in that cliched way that can be awful if overdone, but here it does feel natural.
My favourite part was probably when they woke up in the same bed and realised they were a little too close for comfort, and both instantly jumped to their feet and started making “guy talk” just to prove that they weren’t giving or getting the wrong signals.
The burning car gag was a slow one, perhaps a little too slow? I don’t know. Normally a setup like that would have got to the fire bit sooner, and while they were still in the vehicle, leading to much manic hilarity as they rushed to escape a fiery tomb.
One other thing struck me too, with Steve Martin’s character’s wife, just how different the look was for female characters was even 30yrs ago. Of course it’s Hollywood so she has to be beautiful, but she’s the kind of beautiful that you could come home to and grow old with, as opposed to today where she would be presented purely as a sex symbol to inspire stirrings and nothing else (note I am not having a go at the women here, just Hollywood’s portrayals of them).
