Mezco ThunderCats toys in 2015

Guess I’m not that big of a fan of action figures. The limited articulation on the Mezco mega scale figs gives them an artistic feel. I’ve also been going through the comics and it looks like they took some design elements from those versions of the characters as well.

That’s the point, my friends !

The lack of options drive us to choose the Bandai figures…I agree they have pretty good sculpture (specially Lion-O) but there are a few issues that we can not expect in a 21th century action figure branded by Bandai…

So, if I have to choose, my guess is ‘Thunder Wings Lion-O’ !

But I prefere to think the best Lion-O action figure is still to be made…

i get where ure coming from…the lack of options makes us complacent…as fans we expect near perfection…but realistically for a franchise that has struggled many years now, we HAVE to be complacent…i really doubt that MEZCO will out-do the BANDAI classics…its just not their niche market…for a real “action figure”, we need the companies that are action figure specialist…playmates, bandai, mattel etc…but as a die hard fan, at this point a MEZCO limited articulation 6 inch action figure line that covers most main characters will make me immensely happy…

In some ways. The original toy is still the most icoic and what all of us will automatically think of, but the Bandai 8" one (minus the missing paint and floppy weapons) is basically the figure we would all have wanted back when we were children. Even with its faults it was still a real joy to pose and play with LOL. I think the perfect Lion-O would be some where between the LJN and Bandai version.
Based solely on their Mortal Kombat figures I really think if Mezco does a Thundercats line in that scale we can be assured to having the best Thundercats ever made.:liono

Given the fact that Mezco mega figures borrowed elements from the comics, I would imagine that their smaller scale figs will as well. Companies like Mezco, Neca, etc aim at a more realistic take for adult collectors. I would not expect “toys” from them.

Now that the old “ThunderCats” show is 30 years old, perhaps other companies besides Mezco would be willing to put out new merchandising.

Not necessarily. Mezco did very cartoon accurate Family Guy figures and some Hellboy and other stylized figures. NECA are also doing some very animation accurate Simpsons figures.
I hope they don’t take anymore inspiration from the comics as the art work on the Thundercats comics was pretty much 50/50…the writing for them was worse than the art.

Which TC style is the best source of inspiration to a new toyline in your opinion ?

The cartoon style.

80s cartoon. No mix of comic look or added realism needed. Stick with the classic look.

Cartoon style? Lion-O for example looks so different scene to scene sometimes I don’t even know what it means to say his cartoon style.

For me, the ultimate version would be inspired by this piece:

That’s the art piece that will never be forgotten by “ThunderCats” fans. Where’d you find it, Grizzlor?

That’s a good question, isn’t it ?

Well, unlike MOTU - where the cartoon brought a very simple style - ThunderCats cartoon style is pretty cool…on the other hand, I agree with Mark there are some art concepts out there…

I love the LJN ThunderTank artwork. I’m impressed you were able to locate it.

Yeah !

I love box arts too…

I’m looking for Cat’s Lair now…

I asked Grizzlor where he found that iconic piece he posted just now. Do you know?

Do you mean this one ?

It’s easily found as TC poster…

I remember there was a rare 3D poster (embossed) of this iconic image…

Although I love that poster, my ideal reference for design and scale would be from this production art.

I love the art used for the packaging of the original figures. Does anyone have any of them in high resolution?

I actually like that group shot you posted, Booshman.

I agree on going with a likeness of the 80s original. The one Mark posted is pretty classic and timeless. A good choice if I had to pick.
