Martial arts, anyone?

Usual question I ask when I first join a forum: anyone else into martial arts? I’m a Brazilian jiu jitsu guy myself, about which I can go into painfully longwinded detail if anyone cares.

Jeet Kune Do.

Cool - which side of the fence does your JKD fall? As far as I understand it (which isn’t very far), there’s been at least one major JKD split, between those who take Lee as the creator of a tradition which needs to be held to, and those who feel that the whole point was not to fall into that kind of thinking (though I’m sure thats massively simplifying the distinction). JKD concepts and JKD nucleus or something like that?

Although JKD does seem to cover a broad range (forerunner to MMA in some respects, and there was a JKD guy in the one of the early UFCs - Todd Medina in UFC 5, though he appears to have wholeheartedly jumped into BJJ since then, judging by the Carlson Gracie tats on his chest): I seem to remember Matt Thornton used to define himself as JKD (perhaps he still does?), and then there’s the highly regarded Dan Inosanto (who was still capable of getting a black belt in BJJ despite being past 60, IIRC). Another black belt, but here in the UK, Rick Young, is also big on JKD (again, IIRC), but then that would be unsurprising given his close connection to Inosanto.

Most of my martial arts days are over unfortunatly.

But back before ‘the accident’ I did alot of Judo and as a side line sport a bit of Tang Soo Do.

I also had a couple of sessions of Budoken No Taijitsu, but that was a matter of padding the class out at a friend of mines request.

I see you like to talk martial arts, so i’ll warn you now, I don’t, so don’t expect any long winded posts discussing the finer points of Judo. Simply put, it was something I did, was ok at and don’t do anymore.

Fair enough - most people aren’t quite as keen as me to babble for several pages about martial arts.

Would be interested to know what Budoken No Taijitsu is, though: sounds like some ninjitsu thing that might have popped up in the 80s? Of course, I can always just have a look on wikipedia or something, rather than pestering people who’ve already told me they don’t want to talk martial arts.

I have a first degree black belt in Taekwondo. It’s been awhile since I did any martial arts though.

If what sensei said was true. It’s actually what pre-dated ninjitsu, a simplier form of the art, only ever taught orally.

I believe Jeet Kune Do is how your soul reacts and protects your body in a life threating situation through physical combat, thus showing your true self. Its no style, its how you fight in a REAL fight…showing your true self, that is the art.

Was that ITF, WTF or one of the smaller ones? And do you ever watch it in the Olympics? I was looking forward to it last time around, but got bored as they just seemed to be bouncing aggressively at each other without actually doing anything. On the other hand its a sport with a set or rules like anything else, so I guess once you understand them fully it becomes entertaining.

My preference would be stand-up with K-1 rules, or even better, BJJ in the Olympics, though then that might suffer the same fate as judo with all the restrictive rules (though judo remains a great style to take despite some of those restrictions).

Probably a big ‘if’ in that case, although I don’t know much about ninjitsu. From what I’ve read, its sounds as if it was mainly invented in the 70s/80s rather than have a great deal of historical basis as an actual codified martial art.

Used to do Karate do Shotokai but I thought that was really boring. I also did a lot of Judo, which was fun but lately I’ve been doing Bujinkan Taijutsu. Haven’t actully been really that active since it just costs so much but maybe a little later when I have some more money I’ll pick it up again.
