I am not sure if this has yet to be addressed, I am new to collecting and although I have tried to read every post concerning variations and rarities, I am sure I have missed some. This question has been bothering me for a few days; are there really 16 different variations of Lion-O? I know in theory it could be true, but have any of the long time collectors seen them all? How about 1 or 2 variations that have never been seen. I am going to do a poll, If you own said variation (MOC only please, for card back verification purposes) please check it on the poll. I am going to leave this run and allow multiple votes; I would like to see what doesn’t show up at all.
I own most of the Lion-o Variations, for anyone interested, can check them out in my Collector’s Showcase. For any info, i’d be happy to answer your questions.
Indiabluesplit, keep in mind that Red hair Lion-o w/Battery (8-back) actually counts as the Maroon hair Lion-o w/Battery.
I used to have an 8-back Lion-o red hair on Card, he was one of my very early finds, but i did the mistake to open him!! I’ve kept his cardback though in good condition :o, (i didn’t check him on the vote yet). Also the Orange hair of Series 2 was only produced with Snarf.
Yeah, Orange and Maroon for the 8-backs W/Battery. The grading sticker
for my Lion-o stated RED but this is a mistake, it’s the Maroon hair. I’ve noticed this on other cases too. Here in the Lair we count this first version as the Maroon.
Also, it’s very hard to find the Rainbow Series 1 Lion-o which was the only one along with Mumm-ra released in UK in 8-backs.
I believe the Red(Maroon) hair Lion-o W/Battery comes first in rarity.
I actually think the maroon and red hair are separate versions. If you look at the loose acc they are a different color. I might have prematurely checked one of the battery offer lionos in haste as I know i had it at one time but I haven’t been able to find it lately. Anyway the poll does not include thunderwings liono, glasslite liono, playful liono (with and without shuttlegun), and venezualan liono, cosmocats liono. If your adding those I have two loose thunderwings, misb glasslite liono, and both versions of moc playful liono, and I’m supposed to have a loose venezualan liono coming in the mail if he ever shows up
I thought about adding the TW Lion-O but i have never heard of any variation of it (although, I guess it would be a variation of Lion-O in general.) Also didn’t know there were two different Playful Lion-Os…interesting.
Merged Post:
Assortment number 3500 would have been first correct? and this figure could have came in Orange with Orange accessories, red with red accessories or red with Maroon accessories, is that correct?
Assortment number 3527 would have had red hair with maroon accessories or orange hair and orange accessories right?
and neither 3500 or 3527 actually had Maroon hair?
It was Orange hair with Orange accessories and Maroon hair with maroon accessories. I think Matt is mistaken on this, any Lion-o figure belonging to Series 1,8-back i’ve seen comes with Maroon hair.
The same goes here, hair and accessories were always released in the same color
3527 is the maroon hair, W/Battery and 3500 the orange hair
I was thinking about this at work today and I messed up on my playful figs. I have both moc versions of mummra not liono. I only have the playful liono with shuttle gun. As far as actual playful variants there is only one lion-o, however I was counting packaging variations, as there is regular liono, and shuttle gun w/ liono (and also a liono with snarf, since there is a playful snarf and now that i think about it a glasslite snarf but ive never seen either of those sets and I kind of doubt they exist). Anyway wanted to clear up any confusion, since i lumped packing variations in as well.
As far as the maroon acc. Ill have to take a look I swear I have orange, red and Maroon. The red and maroon are different colors, just like mummra has a blood (dark) red set of acc/paint and a red set of acc/paint
I think the only Red hair and accessories wer released for the ,very hard to find nowadays, Rainbow 8-back Lion-o.
The American version either with the battery offer or not came only in the maroon color. My opened 8-back Lion-o(without the battery) is certainly maroon.
Please matt have a look too and tell me what you think.
Hopefully this helps some of the confusion. If I have to I can dig up my loose acc. If you click on the pic you should be able to blow it up more. This to me looks red and not maroon

Matt, you are right my friend, your old 8-back without battery is definitely Red. It’s quite strange though, because i have exactly the same version but in Maroon hair(i mean of my 8-back lion-o without battery, btw i opened the card, i didn’t receive it open,i am still regretting it…).
The rainbow 8-back Lion-o was definitely red but never came with the battery offer in UK.
About your ljn Battery included Lion-o, Matty it’s kind of hard to tell, due to the flash and the yellow blister, judging from the claw though, it looks maroon to me. However, if you say it is Red then i believe you.
indiabluesplit, you are going to get confused with all this variations, so generally just keep in mind that in Series 1, Lion-o was produced mostly in Orange and Maroon and apparently a few red.
Series 2-Orange and Red W/Snarf and Lion-o alone only in red
Series 3–we are talking about the 22-back European version where Lion-o was released in Red but you will find some darker-Maroon variations like the Rainbow-2nd logo Lion-o the so-called Brown chest who also resembles in face modeling to the ljn counterpart.
To make matters worse, i am staring now on my AFA 90 Lion-o, 14 back LJN/Italy. The grading sticker says RED HAIR, but this is certainly a mistake too. His hair are maroon 100%, by no means red and for some weird reason his weapons are both red. i have to admit they make a nice antithesis!
i think what really throws people off is the fact that the yellowing of the blisters actually makes things darker. But i havent really actually held the fig in my hand in a bit. Ill go to my parents house next weekend and scope it out, cause im intriqued now since i thought it was red but it looks like it could be maroon. So ill check it out in person and get back to everybody.
The bummer thing about all this is I swear at one time when I was really hardcore collecting about 3-4 years ago I had two Lion-o 8 backs with battery different hair colors and now I have only found one in my going through things. Kind of a bummer cause it seems like i have almost every version of mummra ever lol. Oh well such is life just gives me a reason to keep collecting
This is what i have been doing, and it may be the wrong method but it seems to work so far, even with highly yellowed cards. Compare the gloves to the power ring. the power ring is actually RED and doesn’t appear in any other color, if the glove is lighter than the power ring it is an orange variation, if it is darker, then it is the Maroon variation, and if it matches exactly, then it is the red variation. If you run these figures pictured above through this simple test, then Matt’s is a Maroon, just my 2c:eek:
Great information guys. It sounds like some of these variations may be difficult to tell apart in loose form. I am definitely excited to do some Lion-O hunting!
