Is EOT paying too much in hosting fees and can we suggest a cheaper host?

Chris here…

It’s difficult to call without knowing their bandwidth and how many GB their site actually takes up, but I would say that IMO they ought to be able to get cheaper webhosting than that…

The company I always use for webhosting are a British company called Compila - www.compila.com . They’ve always had some of the best prices on the Internet and their service is very good. I’d recommend checking them out!

Take care…

Why should it matter to us? I really don’t care about them to be honest.

I think it’d be sad to see them go under. I’m not going to take money out of my pocket to help them keep their site afloat but if we could give them a tip towards cheaper hosting fees I think that’d be a pretty cool thing of us to do.

Well I think those fees are pretty standard across most hosts, so if they can’t afford that then I dunno what else to say.

Chris here…

I personally would have said that their fees were on the dear side, but in all honesty that’s without full knowledge of their bandwidth, how many gigabytes their site takes up, etc., etc. Fire them the link to Compila I posted above, they’ve always given me a good service!

I can sort of see both sides of the debate between you two guys. On the one hand I definitely understand where Neil’s coming from in the sense that these guys are our competition and so if we help them it could be argued that we’re hurting ourselves. On the other hand, if we help them we look like a good “community minded” ThunderCats site, which may help us in other ways in the future (such as promoting some of this site’s activities via EOT and elsewhere). So, I can see both points of view here…

They are looking at £21.99 per year, but that is if just 1GB of webspace is enough for the forum to run on… not sure exactly how much space forum software alone takes up?

The most space Compila offer is 5GB, which for £89.99 per year is a bit low. With Hostmonster, you get unlimited space and unlimited bandwidth for around £72 per year.

It will be cheap if you don’t run a forum, as you don’t need any MySQL databases.
