I know a lot of folks here on the board are avid gamers, so I thought I’d start this thread by bringing up those games by independent developers that some may not have heard of that are worth checking out. I’ll start with a few
The Deathspank Series (Deathspank, Thongs of Virtue and The Baconing)
A Hack n’ Slash series of games by Ron Gilbert (co-writer of the Monkey Island and Maniac Mansion games). It’s got a great sense of absurdist humor and a cartoony design aesthetic that makes me think of Sergio Aragones’ Groo the Wanderer. Best of all, the title character, Deathspank, sounds to me like Larry Kenney as if he was doing Lion-O on a drunken bender!
Outland
A side-scrolling platformer in the vein of Metroid that looks like shadow puppets meets Tron. Has a very interesting game mechanic where you must change colors to get through obstacles and defeat enemies. Fun to play and beautiful to look at.
Bastion
This new Hack n’ Slash game has been getting a lot of positive buzz of late. I like it mostly for the on-the-fly narration by the Ron Perlman sound-alike. 
'Splosion Man & Ms. 'Splosion Man
These platformers from Twisted Pixel alternated between looney fun and controller-throwing difficulty. But somehow they’re still addicting. A large part of the charm I think comes from their offbeat sense of humor and the title characters, who run around like five-year-olds on a sugar high.
Space Pirates and Zombies (S.P.A.Z.)
Two great tastes that taste great together! It’s a top-down space combat shooter in the vein of old-school games like Asteroids and Star Control II, coupled with space exploration and RPG-styled gameplay. If you ever wondered what captain Mal Reynolds and the Serenity crew would do if they came up against the living dead, this might provide an answer.
Hawken
This first-person mech simulator is just around the corner. Rather than tell you what it is, I think it’s better if I show you…

SOL: Exodus
It’s been a while since we’ve had a really good Space Combat Simulator in the vein of Wing Commander or TIE Fighter. And it looks like that situation will finally be remedied by the release of this game, which is looking to come out some time next year. Again, I think I’ll just show you…
