IMPORTANT! Leaked team member info!

Hey gang,

I’m sorry to be blunt, but battling with a cold whilst writing this here I need to be straight to the point and then get back into bed, LOL!

I apologise for starting a new thread about this rather than keeping it to the movie script thread already on this team forum, but this is something that REALLY concerns me.

In the script discussion thread, Queen Lynxana posted this (I’ve highlighted the really relevant bits in bold):

Now, there is NO REASON why Queen Lynxana should know ANY of that. You could say “Well, perhaps someone at WB knows someone and they opened their mouth.” But, read the last part of her sentence - she knows what we’ve been talking about on this team forum. If that’s the case, there’s only two ways she could know about that - either she’s hacked into this forum and is reading everything we’re saying (including this post if she wants to), or, someone on this team has told someone about this, and it’s come back to Queen Lynxana.

Now, I’m not directly accusing anyone of leaking site secrets! I have complete faith in the good intentions of all of this site’s team members.

But, IMO, someone has been talking about site issues to someone that they trust and who they frankly shouldn’t trust.

I have my own suspicions about how this has happened but I may well be completely wrong and so will keep my own council on that for the time being.

But let me reiterate - THIS IS SERIOUS STUFF. If Queen Lynxana has accessed this info about us, she (and others like her) can access more. This can, ultimately, do damage to the site IMO, and I would like all of the team to try and identify where this leak has come from.

Take care…

Embarassingly I need to put my hand up on this. I put the following post on digg under an alias that nobody could link back to me or the site, but all the same I shouldn’t have said it:

You can tell from these comments that people haven’t actually checked the link, read the script or looked into who the creative team is behind this flick.

If you want to do something more than post: “Don’t **** this up” or “GI Joe sucked and so will this” or “Snarf is gay” then check out these links…

The script is available at http://www.thundercatslair.org/cartoon/special/mov
It’s the real script because thundercatslair.org has been told to take the script down by WBs lawyers, but there is no way to know what version of the script this is.

The director of the movie is Jerry O’Flaherty who is best known for his work on Gears of War. Check out this example of the inspired **** he’s done before http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccWrbGEFgI8

The guy originally brought on to do the character concept designs is Charlie Wen, you can see some of his work here: http://charliewen.typepad.com/photos/god_of_war_2/
http://charliewen.typepad.com/photos/god_of_war_2/

This movie is not going to be live action. It’s not going to be a cartoon. If it gets made it is planned to be a cgi movie. Here is the Lion-O concept done by Charlie Wen: http://www.thundercatslair.org/uploaded_images/lio

I’d love to see this movie get made. I thought the script was a masterful modernized version of what the ThunderCats movie should be. I hope that what Screenrant wrote about this still being developed is true, I’d be first in line to get a ticket to this.
Merged Post:

EDIT: I’ll be taking the script down today and will be posting WB’s cease and desist in its place. I’ll keep the front page of the script up there along with a link to our front page because the entire online world has linked back to that pdf and to our front page, and the one page description Chris and I put up about the contents of the script.

We got a HELL of a lot of attention on this and most decent outlets linked back to TCL as the source of the story and they linked to our branded copy of the script which is awesome too because that copy is being spread like wildfire through twitter and blogs. Do a google search on ‘thundercats script leak’ and BAM… lots of major news sites carrying our story word for word, though screenrant.com’s short expansion on our article gets referenced more often also.

Nice scoop for us, nice work Manny getting that copy so quickly and hopefully more news will start coming our way as a result.

I’ll let WB’s lawyers know we’re taking it down this evening and I’ll see if we can get a message to the internal property manager of the ThunderCats property to offer our assistance on releasing any authorized news in the future.

Cheers,
Mark

Chris here…

Hey Mark, thanks for identifying where Queen Lynxana got that from. I won’t lie…even though I understand what you were trying to do, I think that blowing the whistle on the fact that WB’s lawyers have asked us to take the script down and we haven’t yet is counterproductive. :frowning:

If we want to make ourselves look professional we need to be seen to act in a professional way, and if it gets out in the public domain that WB have served us a “cease and desist” and we ignore it, that just does damage to this site by making us look like a “gossip and leaks” site rather than a site that presents official news. :frowning:

Now, if we link to leaked news that someone else has posted, that’s different! And, I definitely think we did the right thing uploading this script. But, I think now that the whistle’s been blown on us having been asked to take it down, I think we’ll damage ourselves and our reputation further if we leave it online. :frowning:

That aside, thanks Mark for owning up here, your honesty and candor are much appreciated, and I know you were only doing what you thought was right for the site.

EDIT: LOL, looks like you added to your post whilst I was replying!

I agree with everything you’ve said, Mark, and support completely all your decisions. LMK if I can be of any further help with anything!

Take care…

By the way, did anybody else talk to Queen Lynxana about our discussions here? She said a few things that I thought might have gone beyond what she read on digg

No big deal if you did, I just want to put my mind at rest that she doesn’t have a back channel into our discussion boards

Chris here…

Yeah, I thought the same thing after I read your explanation a second time.

I’m absolutely 100% certain that no one here would have said anything to Queen Lynxana because she’s such a loose cannon, LOL! But, I am concerned that somebody here might have said something to somebody else outside of the team, and that that information might have made its way to Queen Lynxana via a “Chinese whispers” effect…

For my part, I haven’t discussed any aspect of the TCats movie script outside of this team member forum.

Take care…

I haven’t spoken to anyone about ThunderCats except for those on the team and my contacts within WB.

Chris here…

Maybe it’s just Queen Lynxana’s choice of words - had Angie still been on the team, even though I get on really well with her, I might have been a tiny bit suspicious. I’m not suggesting that she (or any TCL team member past or present) would do so with any malicious intent, but sometimes folks can say things to people without really thinking and it’s gone further, it’s happened to me several times in my “offline” life…

Take care…

Guys my apologies for having mentioned to Angie about what was going on. She has gone through similar situations with her site so all i asked was a bit of advice on the matter. At the time it was just simple talk but it turns out Angie spoke to queen about us needing to take down the script, hence her “insider” comment.

I guess one needs to be more careful about these things. By the way guys…blame me for this one but her conduct on the boards is uncalled for. She is now banned for 2 weeks

Sheesh I’m MIA for a day and all this happens! Wow oh wow.

If it were that urgent to take down the script we must have had WB very freaked out. I’m guessing a lot of the plot outlines were pretty much set in stone and whether or not it was to be re-written most of the core elements would be carried over to another draft.

Oh that Queen Lynxana is a trouble maker. She very OTT about everything. Remember this is the person who banned herself from her own site!

I’d suggest in future nobody talks about official site business to anyone outside the core team in the future. I haven’t read QL posts yet, but I’m guessing she makes us look arrogant and amateur from what she has said. If we are not careful we won’t just alienate WB, but the fans as well.

I think we need to have a team meeting asap.

Chris here…

Thanks MannyC for identifying where that came from - appreciate your honesty, my friend!

I agree with all of the above. Although this week has had positive results in terms of publicity and traffic to the site, with no offense directed at any one individual I don’t think this has been our finest hour. It looks as though we’ve gotten out of it with no major harm done thanks to Mark’s superb PR skills, but nonetheless we have been playing with fire…

I’d like to propose that for future information of this kind we need to set up some kind of internal guidelines within the team so that a) any information that goes online isn’t going to incur the wrath of WB (that’s not an issue if we’re linking to a report or leak that someone else has made - only if we are the ones doing the reporting or leaking), and b) that there are specific protocols for what we do or don’t disclose to non-team members. Again, this is all said without malice, but just trying to prevent a PR nightmare of the future.

INSERT EDIT: Just realised that “specific protocols” sounds about up myself, LOL! I’m struggling through a really heavy cold here, so hopefully you guys know what I mean.

I’m very happy to shoot for a team meeting, someone throw some dates out there and I’ll LYK what ones I can do! Be good to catch up with everyone anyway!

Take care…

That’s what I was hoping to discuss  Plus it’s nice for us to regroup every once in a while

Chris here…

If MannyF is able to make the meeting, I’d also like to suggest we use the opportunity to have a chat about “ThunderCats Lair 3.0” (the new version of the site), as I think this is a very positive step forward for the site.

Take care…

I haven’t spoken to her - she’s barking mad. I like that she has a different opinion and all that but she’s basically a nasty troll, not understanding how to express an opinion without blatently p*ssing off other folks with insults.

I think she knows exactly what she’s doing - trying to create unrest and such within our group. So the best thing to do is just not to take on board anything she’s got to say - because she’s absolutely mad.

I agree Nick. Thinking about it… if she didn’t want the script linked and thought it hurt the property, why did she wait to post her opinion until she knew about the WB C&D?

It’s obvious her original intent was to create some drama. I actually remember once that our forum was called ‘boring’

Apparently it’s dull if you don’t have in-fighting and flame wars on a forum

For those who didn’t see QL’s post that went over the line here it is:

*queen lynxana grabs Grizzlor by the shoulder fur and pins him up against the wall

Look Fuzzy Wuzzy, don’t make me out to be a bad girl.. I’m doing this for all of our own good. There is a C & D. I love this site and if you don’t work on it, WB will destroy it. They are already ****ed off about the script being leaked.

I don’t know what more to say than just kiss their ass and comply.

Gee, how much fur do you have and exactly what kind of animal are you?

*fingers can’t find skin, Lynxana is confused…

Ummmm, I’m sure there is skin somewhere,…

*punches and finds more fur

I can’t find a base!

Eiither way, there is no ebay. There is just a few big mouths out there that are ruining it for the rest of us. Until I see a damn clip, I won’t believe crap. If my Tcat film is going to get ruined, I want to see a face damnit! It was supposed to be in 2010, then it got stopped because of leaks, most likely this site, now rumor is 2012, so anymore rumors or crap, I want a face, a voice and a pic. TCL, please don’t ruin this for the rest of us! Come on! I don’t know who your inside source is but I hope he shuts the F**k up, he killed this movie.

  • This site ruined it for everyone.

Merged Post:

I want to say this in response to what Chris said about this not being our finest hour. I disagree completely about us making any mis-steps in regards to posting this script.

First of all WB is NOT ****ed off at us. This kind of thing is very routine for them. They followed a step by step process when dealing with this. The abuse department at a company like WB has researchers working for them all day every day who scan google and the web for key terms like “WB leak” “Warner Bros. leak” and they daily get hits back on various properties they own. This all unfolded when screenrant ran the story, we’d had it up for three days before we received the e-mail.

The abuse department sees a story like screenrant’s then will send a form e-mail to the webmaster e-mail on the site, this is done by a junior clerk and is very rarely managed by a lawyer. In this case the guy we dealt with didn’t follow his contact information with any title or designation. I don’t think he’s legally qualified at all, he is a clerk. They copy the VP of the area in on all of these form e-mails and then its the clerks job to chase down a removal of the IP as soon as possible.

At the very same time that a form e-mail is sent to the webmaster, a similar notice is sent to the abuse department of the host. Depending on the host you can see very different reactions. Some won’t obey any requests to remove IP and they are usually offshore and not in the jurisdiction of the IP laws. If you’re with an offshore host like this the abuse department at WB will keep chasing the webmaster as thats the most effective route.

The industry standard for “reasonable timeframe for removal” is 5 business days. We complied within one business day.

Nobody at WB really cared about this. A low level clerk was following their procedure on an incident among hundreds that the department he works in looks after.

It just felt like the world coming down on us because hostmonster has what I believe is a ridiculous policy of pulling down your entire site on a single unsubstantiated e-mail from one complainant. They were irresponsible for not contacting Manny first. Imagine if this website made hundreds of thousands of dollars a day and it was pulled down for something as small as this? hostmonster would be on the hook for lost revenues.

In our case we were down for less than five minutes and the guy I spoke to apologized for not contacting us first, as he should have.

I did my research before making the decision to leave the script up instead of complying instantly with WBs first e-mail. No harm at all has been done in my opinion. This was jsut our first experience like this and there will be more in our future years as the property ramps up again.

Nobody at WB or involved in the movie is upset. Manny can comment if he feels Jerry or Charlie feel otherwise.

By the way Manny, I asked Charlie also if this script was one he’d seen and he also offered to share more concept artwork with us. I don’t think he has his nose bent out of shape at all, didn’t sound like Jerry did either.

Keep this in perspective, we bought the script off of ebay. The cat was already out of the bag, all we did was get ahead of the rest of the media on it. Exactly what any good fan site worth their salt would do. Then we complied within one business day on the cease and desist order. Nobody can fault us for that, and besides what hostmonster did and then apologized for, there has only been a positive result for us. We will possibly have front of the line alerts on news WB puts out about ThunderCats, will enough persistance we can get even more access over time. We will see a lot more traffic in February thanks to this leak and our site name is branded across a script that is being shared across the net like wildfire.

QL is another story altogether and she shouldn’t be lumped in on this. I don’t fault Manny for talking to Purrsia about this. Purrsia used to be one of us and if she hadn’t left on her own she’d have been right here with us enjoying the experience of getting this script to fans first. The fact that she showed such poor judgement herself and blabbed this to a known hot head is purely Purrsia’s own fault. I suggest that based on this one example we should no longer talk to Purrsia or anybody else outside of this group about internal site business.

Yeah, a meeting would be nice and it would allow everyone to get back on the same page.

It’d be nice just to chat with everyone!

EDIT:

As for the take down, I totally understand and agree to a certain extent to what Mark posted. It probably was procedure, but nonetheless, I’m kind of hoping that the script was the only thing that they really looked at.

I’m just saying we have to be cautious. I didn’t have a problem hosting the script, but having a C&D is a bit scary, especially when my name is linked to the hosting. I just freaked out a little bit.

I still have information from Jerry and others about the concept images that I haven’t even made public yet. I just don’t want to get Jerry or my other contacts in trouble. The hosting of the script didn’t affect my relationship with my contacts, but if we show poor judgement (which I’m not saying we did with the script) about handling classified information, it will be more difficult to gain their trust.

In any event, we’re all okay. The site’s content is safe, and I think we’ve made the rounds on the internet.

Chris here…

Hey Manny, I think that’s a very good and reasoned summary of events, and echoes entirely how I feel - and I would have freaked out too!

I also think you make a valid point about hoping WB didn’t take a look around here too closely - technically we’re hosting stuff on here that, under the letter of the law, breaches their copyright several times over. Knowing how tight-fisted Mattel are with their copyrighted material (thinking of some of the hassles they’ve given He-Man.Org), we’re very fortunate that WB turn a blind eye to so much of the TCats content that’s spread around the Internet, including on this site.

I say massive kudos to Mark and his PR skills for being able to forge such a positive outcome out of this, he forwarded me his e-mail exchanges with the guy at WB and his diplomatic skills are a huge asset to this site - mad props, Mark!

I’m glad to know that this incident hasn’t harmed your relationship with your contacts, Manny - very good news!

And yep, a team meeting sounds good to me - fire me some dates and if I can be there, wild horses won’t keep me away!

Take care…
