Although I am Irish, as a child, I was raised by a Japanese (step) grandmother. This instilled in me a deep love for all things Japanese…especially Samurai. There fore, it was only natural that I would love the character of Hachiman. However, if I had watched the show as an adult, rather than as a child, I would have been quite unhappy about how his character was introduced.
If the new series’ version of the character is from feudal Japan, I dearly hope that they come up with a good story on how he came to be around, and the severe culture shock he’d surely experience, being a man “out-of-time.”
The first time I saw Nips in the forest of the magi oar episode, i thought he was going to end up being hachiman until the episode went on. To me the design of his character was very close to hachiman. oddly close especially if they are going to bring him into the series.
I think that’s very likely as well, though unfortunate. Many cool things are “Samurai inspired” but they’re rarely as awesome as an actual Samurai, just as no “laser-sword” is ever gonna be as cool as a Lightsaber…
I really never liked Hachiman, neither the eps were he appeared, so I really wouldn’t miss him if he doesn’t make an appearence in the new series. Sorry Hachiman fans
However, I think the Drifter was somehow based on his character.
I don’t see it. Other than the fact that he was a Swordsman (and everyone in that town was), I saw no similarities in their characters.

I DO see your viewpoint though. That’s what I meant by having a problem with the original character. If you’re going to throw a Period Samurai into Third Earth…there’d better be a really good story behind it. Otherwise, it’s just a cheap and corny gimmick. Samurai are very cool, but they’re not so cool that you should just arbitrarily place one in a story.
I don’t see it either. Everyone they’ve shown from the OS so far has pretty much been instantly recognizible in the NS even through the redesigns. Hattanzo (the Drifter) looked nothing like Hachiman, nor did he have a similar personality. The only similarity was that he was a swordsman.
In fact the whole episode was inspired by spaghetti westerns instead of anything Japanese.
i have seen tons of japanese swordsman movies, they do resemble the episode, theres one in particular, i cant remember the name, but a former samurai goes to this town and their are 2 lords, that both want to employ him, and he plays both sides for awhile until they figure him out. it was a spaghetti western style samurai flick, both styles are similer is what i mean. and i hope they dont introduce humans. hachiman, the black knight (mumm-ra’s disguise) safari joe, hammerhand, all would actually take away from the seriousness of the show. the old school’s episodes with these guys were way over the top and really odd. safari joe hunted big cats on earth makes sense, but dumbing down the thundercats so he can capture them is sorta silly. even for a kids show.
I agree about the “handling” of Human characters…but to not even include them would be a huge mistake, in my opinion. Showing what’s become of Humanity in this future Earth could make for some GREAT stories, if done well.
in another thread, actually right now, balgus suggested they could be introduce as a new species, like the wood forgers, i like this idea, as long as they dont introduce safari joe. soemthings even in the os dont make sense to me lol!
