I was reading an article about Grune on Wikipedia where it mentioned that Grune’s great grandfather was lord of the Thundercats, was that touched on in the cartoon, comic books or the unproduced movie script?
I have seen all the episodes, all the US comics, and read that script, and I don’t recall anything of the sort. But then again, I missed a couple things in that script like the Berbil reference. I know Grune was a ThunderCat who turned evil on ThunDera and got exiled. But aside from Lion-O, I don’t recall any ThunderCat having a family history revealed…
In the Wildstorm comic “Thundercats Origins, Heroes and Villains” they have the history of the beginning of the Thundercats and first Lord of the Thundercats. The first lord of the Thundercats was a saber-tooth like Grune. His name was Megatereon.
This was never in the cartoons, only in the Wildstorm new comics.
I’m pretty sure they are getting that info from the WildStorm comics. As to it’s accuracy I’m not sure as it’s been a while since I read those first few comics.
ThIS issue was touched solely on the WS comics.
On the issue Origins: heroes&villains,Chapter four we learn that after many years of the different tribes of Thundera fighting among themselves for dominance and control, the son of the leader of the Machairodonts ,Megatereon,united for the first time all the warring tribes bringing peace and ushered in an age of Rennaisance. Megaetereon, who looked very, very much like Grune in overall appearance was the first Lord of Thundera.
Also, according to the origin story, Megatereon’s reign lasted more than one hundred years and actually he was responsible for the creation of the “Thundercats” since under his orders the nobility of each tribe would come together to form a new body known as Thundercats. He started building the First Cat’s lair and generally prepared the ground for Thundera to grow vigorously.
On the second issue Origins: villains&heroes,Chapter one, the two old friends and great warriors, Jaga and Grune have an interesting conversation and Grune openly states his authoritarian feelings towards the current establishment in Thundera, characterizing it as inferior and suggests ruling the Thunderian populace with undemocratic ways in order to restore its power and dominance. Grune mentions to Jaga that when his Great Grandfather(Megatereon) was the Lord of Thundercats all the thunderians were worthy of his rule. This scene occured the previous day, right before Grune staged a coup to take over Thundera.
Finally, in the last volume of the mini-part Thundercats (5of5) where Grune is challenging Lion-o to a duel for the throne, he says repeatedly that he is the rightful king of Thundera( apparently as a legit descendant of Megatereon).
Great info Lordore; I do recall the conversation between Grune and Jaga. That was a great issue IMO.
I will have to go back and reread those.
Thanks Alex, i think the WS comics offered some very good and plausible explantions around the Thundercats history,still i don’t know if they are regarded as canon.
