The 2016 trailer has now reached over 500,000 dislikes.
And how many likes?
Just over 200,000. Although some of those are computer generated by Sony.
How can you be sure?
According to the other comments that’s what a lot of them are.
Sony are still deleting lots of comments.
The Reboot 2016 action figures are in the shops in the US now.
At the moment, the trailer for this Ghostbusters reboot is the most disliked trailer in the history of Youtube. (according to a number of movie websites).
That doesn’t surprise me LOL.
I can’t recall any movie facing so much hatred even before its release.
Nor I. Even the 2011 The Three Musketeers movie didn’t even have nowhere near much hatred. And in that movie of the Musketeers they have a Ninja/martial artists assassin and AIRSHIPS!:confused
I have a horrible feeling that a lot of the hatred about the new Ghostbusters film stems from pure sexism. Shocking to think that in this day and age, gender is considered a bigger deal than historical inaccuracies. The Three Musketeers with ninjas and airships copped some flak, but I have a strong suspicion that it would have copped even more flak if they’d made the title characters female. That such attitudes still exist in this day and age is saddening.
Check out Marcus Brigstocke’s reaction to that on youtube, he nails the subject.
There may well be problems with the new version of the film, but it won’t be as a result of the title characters being all women.
It’s a bit like in any TV show when a main character is replaced (or the role is taken over by a new actor). The audience start finding fault, and lay the blame at the door of the new cast member, irrespective of what other changes might have taken place.
My problem isn’t the fact the main characters are women, far form it. I personally don’t want a reboot at all with an all male cast, a female cast or even a mixed gender cast. The original was fine and they should leave it alone. If they demand on making a sequel…let them cast whoever they want.
They did make a Musketeer film about a female Musketeer.
I know there was “La Femme Musketeer”, starring Suzy Amy as D’Artagnan’s daughter - and, perhaps in a bid for credibility, they got Michael York as D’Artagnan, a role he played in the 1970s films and their 1989 sequel.
I personally don’t think that the genders of the leads has anything to with the hatred. It’s just the reason (or lack of) for the gender swap and the way the whole film appears to be done.
Audience don’t hate female leads. In fact, good female leads in action/sci-fi movies have a huge fan following from both sexes. Take for example Sarah Connor or Ellen Ripley or Lara Croft. All great and iconic characters. It is when an established character’s gender is changed for no apparent reason, then the people are angered. Imagine if suddenly they decided to turn Lara Croft into a male “Larry Croft” in the next movie. Would audience be cool with that? I highly doubt it. Similarly, what was the point of changing Johnny Storm’s race from Caucasian to African American in the latest “Fantastic Four” movie? It was just pandering and trying to be overly politically correct. People who hate it aren’t racists, its just the illogical decision that makes people mad.
The new Ghostbusters movie is hated because they made it a reboot and then flipped the genders for no particular reason. If it was sequel with an all-female cast, it wouldn’t have gotten the hatred it is getting now. Say for example one (or two) of the daughters of the original Ghostbusters decides to restart their father’s business of catching ghosts. They then employ more females to round up the cast to 4 or maybe even make it 3 or 5. Also this reboot has been treated like an all out comedy. The original GB had its funny moments but it had a lot more scary moments as well. This reboot has been treated almost like one of those spoof movies. The library scene is a prime example of that. Just take a scene from the original and make it over-the-top Leslie Nielsen funny. :biggrin
Ghostbusters is a classic movie with a HUGE fan following even today. And hardcore fans DO NOT like reboots or remakes. Why reboot a great movie? If you want to reboot, make a reboot of a flop movie. That way you can fix the things that led to the movie flopping in the first place. Fans will almost always prefer sequels to reboots, no matter how bad the sequels may eventually turn out to be. There are rare instances of course where reboots have been successful but that is usually when they are done in a different way and intelligently. For most of the time, filmmakers remake a successful movie but disguise it as a sequel (cough “Predators” cough).
Even if this new Ghostbusters reboot had an all-new male cast, I feel it still would have gotten a lot of hatred. Imagine the Ghostbusters reboot starring all the male comics of SNL! :confused I don’t think people will be cool with that. Today if they decide to remake “Jaws” there would be a huge backlash irrespective of if the cast is male or female.
Wilycub, I do agree with probably everything you’ve said here.
I love the original Ghostbusters, and have it on DVD. It’s a classic, no question.
And if you’re going to reboot, reboot a flop - I’ve been saying this for years. Remake something that didn’t do so well the first time round, and make it work. (Of course, the studios will never touch that kind of idea, because they don’t want to associate themselves with something that failed!)
I can’t comment on the new Fantastic Four film as I haven’t seen it. Also I don’t know who Sarah Connor is.
As for the new Ghostbusters? I’ll reserve judgement on the film itself until I actually see it. Although I rather suspect I’ll view it in a similar light to Jurassic World.
Technically they did remake Jaws…well the basic plot of Killer Sharks/fish attacking people. Deep Blue See, Piranha, Sharknado, Mega Shark Vs Giant Octopus…even Sharktopus LOL.
I seen the remake of The Thing which is a prequel and sequel (I know) to the original and it has a female lead. I am not keen on reboots but it was okay.
When I was a child female leads never bothered me in films, TV shows, cartoons or toys. Like when I was 4 or 5 I wanted Cheetara and Evil-Lynn figure because I loved the cartoons and the characters so when I got them I never thought twice about getting them instead of male figures. I am sure I would have had even more female character toys from other toy lines like Arcee from Transformers, JB from Bravestarr, Galadreia and Verulina from Visionaries if the toy companies had made them. Even when I was 11 and found some Pumyra figures in a shop I didn’t even hesitate I just instantaneously grabbed it and bought it.
I even used to watch Buffy The Vampire Slayer and I really liked it.
*Btw I am amazed you didn’t mention The Force Awakens. ![]()
Sarah Conor is the female from the Terminator movies.
The 2015 Fantastic Four film is really, REALLY awful.
I think that’s the best way to approach the movie. :thumbsup
I almost did. But then deleted it because I didn’t want to wake up with a horse’s head in my bed! LOL! :biggrin
I don’t think there are enough "really"s in the world to fully justify how “really awful” it was! ![]()
