Favorite Thundercats Episode?

In the “Pumm-Ra” episode, after Mumm-Ra changes to Ever-Living mode, the golden ring on his right arm is missing.

at least it was just his ring and not his UNDERPANTS like in the episode “hair of the dog” don’t believe me? look it up.

At least Pumyra got that one (her swang song episode?). I can’t think of a Benagli-centered episode; another reason that makes me think his introduction was a waste with no sense at all other than replacing Tygra, they didn’t even tried to develop his character and give us an insight on him, other than showing him as an impulsive whiner.

I can’t think of a single Bengali centered episode except for maybe “Malcar” in season 4 which was just a rip-off of The Mountain with an even weaker side plot.

Bengali was nothing more than a damsel in distress in “Malcar”. LOL! :biggrin He and the Snarfs get stuck in that mine and remain there for the duration of the episode.

The only two episodes which I can think of in which Bengali had some decent screentime were “Helpless Laughter” and “Mossland Mosnter”, and even in those he is paired with Lion-O and does very little on his own.

Tygra was also a damsel in distress, even though he got some good screentime.

Very true! Poor old Tygra was often the victim in most TCats episodes. Despite that, he did get a few episodes dedicated mostly to him, even though he was the damsel in distress in them, like “Fireballs of Plun-Darr”, “Trouble with Time”, “All That Glitters” etc.

Hey! Tygra wasn’t a damsel in distress in “All That Glitters”! How was he?

In fact, he wasn’t a damsel in distress any more than other TCs, but for some reason, the situations where he was remain in the memory of the fans more, maybe because those episodes were among the more obscures in the whole series IMO. Besides “Fireballs of Plun-Darr”, “Trouble with Time”, “Trumagar the Tuska” (a little part of it, not the whole ep), “Crystal Canyon” and “Mossland Monster” -ok, maybe that’s a couple of eps over the “TC in peril” average range LOL- he wasn’t in peril more than the others (in “The Moutnain” and “Superpower Potion”, he was there with Panthro; in “Spaceship Beneath teh Sand” he was under the net with Cheetara; in many others like “Safari Joe”, “Mongor”, “Mycrits”, “Mumm-Ra Berbil”, “Queen of 8 Legs”, “Dream Master”, “Dimension Doom”, “Secret of the Ice King”, “Mad Bubbler”, “Telepathy Beam”, “Bracelet of Power”, “Chain of Loyalty”, etc, he was there with the others).

When I think od a damsel in distress, I think of a character that got in trouble and needed to be rescued in every single episode, and never did anything besides that, not even once had a “heroic” action or episode, like Teela (even she had one in “The Witch and the Warrior”) in MOTU or Bow in She-Ra. That’s not Tygra’s case.

Panthro was kind of a damsel in distress in “Spitting Image” although he solved it on his own, same as Cheetara in some eps. Bengali was in “Malcar” and Pumyra in her last appearence, and let’s not mention the kittens. I think the difference is the other TCs got to solve their situation on their own, while Tygra was neglected that chance, although he kind of did it in “Garden of Delights” and even in “Crystal Canyon”.

Sorry, but I do’t like people thinking like that of Tygra and forgetting his good actions. He had some fine moments: he almost sacrificed himself at the end of “Fireballs of Plun-Darr” and “Pumm-Ra”, where he even defeated Mumm-Ra on his own; he saved the day in “Out of Sight” even when he had other things to worry about in his mind, like remaining invisible for life; he rescued Cheetara in “Divide and Conquer” and also in “Day of the Eclipse” when she fell from CatsLair roof; he found the cure that saved the day in “Wolfrat”, one of the few occassions in which his abilities as a scientist were hilightened; he was there with Lion-O in “Mumm-Rana” and “Together We Stand”.

I know I’ve thought of him that way myself, and still do it from time to time, but let’s give the guy some credit ;).

Also, I think that’s what made him my favorite TC, that he was -and still is- perceived as the team’s uderdog LOL

Sorry, I did not mean to upset you, my striped friend.

What I was trying to say is that Tygra was somehow always unfairly targeted by the writers. I am as upset as you about the way he was often the one that was singled out. Yes, you are absolutely right, in many episodes, the other ThunderCats are no better than Tygra when it comes to being captured. But I think Tygra has more episodes where he is singled out for being the victim than any other TCats. Cheetara wasn’t portrayed as a single victim too many times, probably because she was the only woman (before Pumyra) and the writers wanted to show her as strong and independent. So it came down to Panthro and Tygra, and for some reason the writers preferred Tygra. Apart from Spitting Image, I don’t recall any other episodes where Panthro alone is the victim.

Also what reinforces this false idea that Tygra was “weak” is that even in episodes where Tygra is not the victim, he usually has very little to do or is absent completely (Terror of Hammerhand, All That Glitters, Return to Thundera, Crystal Queen, Sword in a Hole, etc). He is rarely shown saving the day. The writers saved that for Lion-O! LOL! :biggrin Like in “Fireballs of Plun-Darr”. I think that was a great episode and should have been Tygra’s shining moment in which he should have broken out of “Four Winds” without Lion-O’s help.

Even in “Garden of Delight”, Tygra did fight off the addiction but he didn’t really do anything useful. Perhaps that episode could have been written in such a way that it is Tygra who takes the sword from Willa (who believes that the ThunderCats are evil) and throws it to Lion-O. That way he would have sort of atoned for stealing it in the first place. But even in that episode, it is Willa who is made the hero instead of Tygra. :frowning:

No worries! I agree 100% in what you say.

Big rant comig (or a Tygra-redeeming post, if you want to see it that way LOL):

First of all, I agree in that he had more episodes than the others in which he needed to be rescued (eother a whole episode or a scene like in “Turmagar the Tuska”); writers could have balanced things a little more.

Second, yes, he was rarely seen saving the day, or made it through a minor or indirect action (like coming up ith an idea, like in “Pumm-Ra” or “Wolfrat”, which passed almost unnoticed, instead of acting). I always waited for Tygra to actively save the day, and “Garden of Delights” would have been a great chance. He could have set himself free from Mumm-Ra’s spell (which he did) and then make Mumm-Ra believe he was still under his influence until the right time showed up for him (and not Willa) to turn things around. That’s why I liked the final moments of “Fireballs of Plun-Darr” when he said Lion-o it was his mission and should stay; of course, having him freeing himself of the Four Winds would have been better.

So, yes, he was unfairly targeted by writers and usually singled as the one who needed to be saved, more than Panthro or Cheetara that is. I understand and agree what you say about Cheetara, as the 80s had this feminist movement arising and mostly every female character in shows were shown as strong and independent. But why not Panthro for a change? I’m not sure. Maybe because he was supposed to be the strong one, or maybe because he was more liked by kids. But I think that would have given us a chance to get more insight of him Panthro, because despite being the strong one and being afraid of bats, he was a very bland character IMO and that was unfair to him as well; we get much more insight on Tygra, Cheetara and the kittens and almost nothing on Panthro.

Third, I think it also influenced that in episodes where he was captured along with the other TCs, he was either the first one to get defeated (“Mongor”, “Snarf Takes Up the Challenge” -after Lion-O, “Mumm-Ra Lives” part 5) or his fighting sequence was really quick or even not shown despite him not being the first one to get captured (“Mumm-Ra Berbil”, “Dimension Doom”, “Dream Master”, “The Evil Harp of Charr-Nin”, “Safari Joe”, “Telepathy Beam”, “Wild Workout” -where he was left out of the final scene where Cheetara and the kittens got to appear to tell Panthro and Lion-O what happened), so he came by as a not-so-good fighter either. In “Dream Master”, Panthro’s and Cheetara’s sequence were longer than Tygra’s (in this same episode, he’s the one to fall asleep and then fall down from the ThunderTank when the Mutants attack, again singling him as the one who’s weak), and in “Mumm-Ra Berbil” we saw him telling Snarf to look for Lion-O and next we saw him with the bracelet in his arm (he could have turned invisible), unlike Panthro and Cheetara.

Fourth, I also agree in that in many episodes he had little to do, and in some had almost no lines or was absent in space missions or we don’t know where (“Terror of Hammerhand”, “Tight Squeeze”, “Sword in a Hole”, “The Shifter”, “The Trial of Cunning”, “Ravage Island” and good part of second half of season 2). I would have liked to see a Lion-O-Tygra-Cheetara episode, where Pantrho was the absent one. Also, having introduced three new TCs, I expected the damsel in distress role to be more equitative distributed LOL.

But (last LOL), the fact that the other TCs weren’t captured as much doesn’t imply they didn’t screw it from time to time. I think that’s the main difference: Tygra screwed things because by getting into trouble and needing to be rescued, but the other TCs, mainly Cheetara and the kittens, got the other TCs in trouble because of their insecurity, impulsiveness or curiosity (kittens: “Mongor”, “Trouble with Thunderkittens”, “Trapped”, “Tower of Trap”, “Runaways”; Cheetara: “Dimension Doom”, “Sixth Sense”), so they didn’t get the TCs in trouble directly but they did it indirectly IMO. Of course, no one sees those eps as a weakening episode for those characters because they didn’t get captured and rescued (well, the kittens did LOL). Onmthe other hand, other than “Garden of Delights”, Tygra never put the others in danger but himself alone LOL; the fact that Cheetara and the kittens didn’t get in peril themselves (but the others, which might be worse), added to the fact that they got to save the day once in a while, helps them.

But he did have some fine moments like the ones I mentioned in my previous post. Even in “Turmagar the Tuska” he’s the one to help Turmagar and gets to help Lion-O by the end; in “Mumm-Rana” he was there (so unfair Mumm-Rana teleported Lion-O and Snarf but let Tygra run his way to Cats Lair, and again he was absent on the final sequence due to the fact he was in the Feliner reinstalling the Lair’s head). In “Excalibur”, he’s the last TC to fall and the first one to raise, that should tell us something about his inner strength, and in “Monkian’s Bargain” he gives a good fight against Monkian, unlike Panthro and Cheetara who got captured pretty fast. “Superpower Potion” is a different story though; even when he gets to fight Vultureman, he got defeated in such an easy way, unlike Pantro (or not, I’m ot sure about that).

Now, leaving him out of the final episode (along with Pumyra and Jaga) is something I don’t understand and I think I will never get over it :frowning:

Bottomline: Yes, I agree he was the show’s designated “damsel in distress” most of the time (or was absent of many other eps), but he did some good things too and I get pissed at fans remembering only one side of him LOL.

Well Bengali did have a bit of a heroic moment in the thundercubs mini series. when allurro and some of the lunataks attack the lair he fights alurro’s control and tries to get Whileykit to safety. I know he failed but at least he TRIED! I really wish the new cats had gotten more love, well aside from Lynx-O and all of his “lynx-o is blind” episodes bengali and pumyra didn’t get much love. while bengali was annoying I DO like his design. I wish he’d been written better.
I kind of wish they’d introduced a deaf thundercat. Maybe an all white thundercat with blue eyes (since most white cats with blue eyes are deaf) it would have been interesting to see one doing ASL.
Crystal Canyon… POOR TYGRA that’s the second time he got addicted to something. First Mumm-Ra’s LSD fruit and now keystones. At least he overcame it. Maybe it’s just me but as the series went on it seemed to focus less on everyone getting a chance to play hero and more and more on Lion-O being the hero. If there’s one thing I hate it’s main characters ALWAYS being the hero. Why even have the other ones if they aren’t allowed to save the day?

That’s right; they should have given the other TCs a chance to e ethe hero/heroine; maybe even they all as a team rescuing Lion-O. Lion-O saving the day everytime, adn with the Sword of Omens every time, was annoying. You get to wonder what would have been of Lion-O without the sword

Well panthro did have a bit of a more character centered thing in the episode where he and snarf switched minds. I think he was not much of the damsel and this might sound a bit racist please don’t hate me for saying it. He was the 'black" character. He’s a black panther and he’s voices by a black guy. Maybe the reason he wasn’t much of a victim was because people didn’t want to be accused of being racist? I really don’t know. I’m probably wrong I hope I am. one little thing about spitting image though. when the driller kidnaps him her’s only wearing his belt but when he’s in mumm-ra’s pyramid he’s fully clothed. Did mumm-ra get disturbed by the sight of a naked thundercat and magic his clothing on him? XD
Back to Tygra well hmm.. i think the problem was if cheetera had been the victim a lot angry feminists would have been mad for the kids they had to do some “kids are capable of being heroes too” message and Lion-O is the hero so he can’t really be the one in trouble all the time though I REALLY wish there had been an episode where Mumm-Ra captured Lion-O, took away the sword for good (also no snarf around to get in the way) and the other thundercats have to find lion-o and fight mumm-ra. I Kinda wish the sword of omens didn’t get to be used at all in an episode for once. Or mumm-ra managed to be able to wield it by putting some kind of super ancient spell on it. That would have made an interesting five parter. Having to rescue Lion-O and also getting the sword back from Mumm-Ra who managed to figure out how to use it. Okay I am getting off topic here. keep it together girl, don’t start fangirling.
I think what I was trying to get at in that was if something like that happened tygra could become the hero in it, using his scientific skills to figure out a way to free the sword from mumm-ra’s control.
I guess this is one of the reasons pumyra and tygra gets bigger parts in my story because they hardly had anything to do. lol

Didn’t know about Panthro being voiced by a black (Afromamerican) guy; I didd suspect he was the black guy of the team though. That could explain why Tygra was the designated vicim in order to not offend other demographics or “minorities” (again, I’d have liked that role was shared with Bengali in the second season,a s well as Cheetara and Pumyra given that now tehre were two adult females… but not Lynx-O, don’t let us have a blind guy being the designated victim, that would have been seen as discriminatory as well).

Now, don’t take me that serious. I always root for the underdog weven before I know he’s destined to be the underdog. I use to pick a character from the start, not even knowing he is usually doomed to be the designated victim, and then that happens (I want to ask if I’m alone here). As if I had a special sensibility to them:
[ul]
[li]Tygra in TCs. He had a very good start in “Exodus” and all the iitial arc, and even had some great moments in earlier episodes as mentor of Lion-O and Head of Council and then was relegated to what we all know he was.[/li][li]Pumyra was my favorite new TC. [/li]
[li]Aquaman in SuperFriends (don’t laugh).[/li][li]Professor Lupin in the Harry Potter series (he was so mistreated in later books, not to talk about the movies).[/li][/ul]
Even when I choose the hero, he turns oput being relegated by otehr haracter and turns into teh underdog (in terms of fan-acceptance):
[ul]
[li]Luke Skywalker lost the shining spot to Han Solo[/li][li]Hank the Archer (Dungeon and Dragons) was supposed to be the lead character, but was overshadowed by almost every other member of th gang.[/li][li]Quicksilver in SilverHawks… again I liked him (I guess because he had Tygra’s design/face) but lost his lightspot to the new SHs.[/li][li]Cyclops in X-Men (he has a great role in the comics, but wa so mistreated in the movies. They even killed him! And such in a lame way!)[/li][/ul]
And so on… so in ñpart it’s me LOL. Don’t know what attracts me to those characters, or what do they ignite on me from the start, even when they have a good one and look promising.

That’s why my stories usually give them (Tygra, Pumyra, Auqaman) a big role.

Yeah, Panthro is voiced by the guy who played Grandpa Huxtable in The Cosby Show. XD

lol for me other things attract me to a character. I guess that’s why I love Mumm-Ra so much. He started out as a great villain then some jerks who probably hated his guts ruined him in season 3and 4. MUMM-RA DOES NOT GROVEL TO THUNDERCATS. Lol he went from being an epic dude to a woobie. I know mumm-ra should not be a woobie but that’s how he wound up for me! He ain’t gonna grovel in my fanfic, no frigging way. But I’m not being a jerk to Lion-O whom I DON’T like I’m keeping him in character without bashing him.
My attraction to characters tends to be strange. I am usually also drawn to very sweet characters. some of my favorite female characters are sweeties. Pumyra, Flora from the winx club, Lettuce from Tokyo Mew Mew, Aerith from Final Fantasy 7, though it also depends on their personalities. I mean my favorite jedi in star wars is MASTER YODA! don’t laugh. he’s epic.

Mumm-Ra, like most fictional villains, was always meant to be intimidating.

well he wasn’t much of that in season 3 and 4 because the new writer’s seemed to hate his guts. and I STILL wish he would have won in “return to thundera”. You know how many good plotlines would have come of that?!

Almost all the ThunderCats had ginger-colored eyes (even Lynx-O, albeit briefly). Ben-Gali had blue eyes, Jaga and Grune had brown eyes, and Pumyra had red eyes. I came up with different eye colors for the original 'Cats: hazel for Lion-O, peach for Panthro, pink for Cheetara, burgundy for the ThunderKittens, and amber for Tygra.
