So u got Mumm-Ra, The Pyramid, and it seems that alot of the action took place in or around northern africa/egypt. It is a known fact that some egyptians worshipped cats. So maybe the coming of the thundercats to third earth might have been fortold in egypt thousands of years ago? Who knows, but you got to admit it sounds like good fan-fic atleast lol… Also an interesting tidbit: the thundercats logo; the background in the letters has a horizon over a desert and at the left the circle seems to be like a “sun”.
Indeed, it would be good fan-fic and it’s probably been done somewhere.
I think Grune’s the one who told Mumm-Ra all about the ThunderCats and the Eye of Thundera. After all, Mumm-Ra said he knew of the Eye for a thousand years, and Grune rampaged on Third Earth “centuries ago”, according to that one Bolkin in “The Ghost Warrior”. So it only makes sense that somewhere along the line Grune and Mumm-Ra met. :bengali:
Definitely a popular notion throughout the fandom, and surely it’s been ficced about. Lady Bast, I believe, had a particular interest in exploring that angle. Her fics are still around somewhere, last I knew.
In early mythology, ra was just amon ra, God of the sun. However later interpretations of him, saw the god been combined with Horus, forming Ra Horakhty, making him the God of the sky, Earth and slighly more iconically, the Underworld.
All of which saw the God typicated as part man and bird. Which although Mumm-ra dosn’t have a birds head, he does have wings (albeit like that of a bat) and can fly.
I can’t say what Leonard Starr had in mind when he did the bible, or
what the producers had in mind for that matter. I have done a lot of research on Egyptian Mythology (all mythology for that matter) and
I can say that there are many interpretations based on each dynasty
as well as upper and lower egypt.
Cats were mostly worshiped for their hunting skills at keeping the
pest population under controll. It wasn’t until the second dynasty that
it became a visual represintation of the fertility deity Bast. The other being
the all mother (Mother of the other gods) Hathor, which I believe to be the Egyptian version of Aphroditie. Anyway, as for the logo. I don’t believe that it was ever to be seen as a desert, just a chrome effect. The red circle in my opinion represents the Eye of Thundera itself.
Yes Ra was the sun god, their version of Apolllo. Ra was preprsented by a Falcon. So the eye of a falcon, soon was used to represent Ra. This very Eye of ra symbol was also where our current Rx symbol for medician is drived from.
Many get Ra and Horus mixed up, this is because Horus is the egyptian version of the Greek god Helios the Son of Apollo. As such he is the son of Ra. There are even some mixing Horus up with Thoth (Hermes) who is represented by the crane.
I am not saying that the red circle in the logo can’t be a sun, but if it were, it should include the “Ka” or the double which also means soul. Obvisously the wanted to use Egyptian mythology, but I don’t see a full connection.
Mumm-Ra has more incommon with Osiris and Nehebkau than he does Ra, or Horus. Heck he even has more incommon with Set and Aphophis. Now with having said that, the ancient spirits of evel are totems of some egyptian gods, mostly connected with the Underworld. The downside is that in Egypt the underworld/death was not a bad or evil thing but part of the circle of life. It was all about the rebirth.
There are the Snake-birds which seem to be like the Godess Wadjet.
I just don’t see how ra and mum-ra, or even Wizz-Ra can be
connected with one another.
So. yes. There is a connection in that there are references, but I do not see any significance.
In the original pilot concept of the show, the Thundercats do crash land in Africa, on Third Earth. For a time reference, the show creators considered our current history to be First Earth, so Third Earth is far in the future. Mumm- Ra learns about the sword while “mapping the heavens” 7,000 years prior to the Thundercats arrival, during his first incarnation. The combo of the eye arriving on Earth, along with purely evil beings (the mutants ), is what wakes up Mumm- Ra.
