CN 2011 Upfront News: Kingdom of Thundera (no planet) on Third Earth!

The 1st of 2 CN Upfront presentations began today and revealed more information on the ThunderCats series:

ThunderCats: The re-imagined animated series based on the beloved 80s classic tells the tale of a hero’s epic journey to fulfill his ultimate destiny. On Third Earth, the kingdom of Thundera is being threatened by the evil sorcerer Mumm-Ra and young heir to the throne Lion-O embarks on a great quest to take his rightful place as king. The unlikely champion, joined by his faithful comrades Tygra, Cheetara, Panthro, WilyKit, WilyKat and his loyal pet Snarf, must work together to save their world from darkness.

I think this is what they meant when they said the story would be more simplified. Everything happens on Third Earth – I like it!

I’m not entirely sure about this move, BUT I always did wonder how one king ruled a whole planet. This does technically make more sense.

Also interesting is the part saying Lion-O is “on a great quest to take his rightful place as king.”

Maybe the whole season will be like one long Anointment trial. Either that or he’ll have to reclaim it from Grune or something. hmmmm…

Interesting! And very cool! Well, I guess that’s one way they can sidestep the whole blowing-up of Thundera by just consolidating everything and having it all take place on the same planet! Looking forward to this more and more with every tidbit of news. :smiley:

Yeah, it is kinda, but it’s also completely understandable after seeing all the spam posts that were made this weekend.

I think it’s an interesting and great idea. Good twist in the story.

Like Belgus, I also always wondered how a king alone could rule over one whole planet (it is one of the things that bothers me from Star Wars).

I also think this will make comparissons between TCs and the 2002 MOTU series, where King Randor is only King of the kingdom of Ethernos, even bigger.

I don’t know how I feel about this, I don’t like it but I also thought the origin also felt very much like Superman I only liked that they were stranded in a weird planet full of mythology and I hoped they’d give a better origin in the new show. Also didn’t they say that Panthro had been in Third Earth the longest? How does that make sense if they are all in third earth. It also seems they’re getting rid of most of the sci-fi elements…

I don’t think they’re getting rid of the sci-fi elements at all. Although you dont really see any technology in the trailer the Bandai rep at Toyfair said Technology is integral to the show.

I think I like the idea, but I’m not 100% sure. Once the show airs though I’ll probably be all for it. Just have to see how they handle it in the show.

I like the idea, kinda goes along with my city-state idea. It states on Third Earth, The Kingdom of Thundera. So perhaps the Monkians, Vulture men etc etc will have seprerate nations which could be potential enemies or alliesa in the case of Humans such as Hachiman and the Amazons.

Well, Panthro could have been out exploring Third Earth, but it doesn’t have to be a different planet, just other territories.

Wonder if the Stones of Power are a part of his quest to prove he’s worthy to rule the Kingdom of Thundera.

This reminds me of Avatar (The Last Airbender) in that there were separate nations (Fire, Water, Air, Earth). And since one of the producers from that show is now an executive producer of ThunderCats, I’m more inclined to believe this is how the show might be structured.

I just hope the writing is just as strong as Avatar.

Hopefully less comedy tho. Thundercats should be a little more serious than Avatar was.

most likely this is what is going to happen, i can’t say i am thrilled with the news, it will depend on how well the scenario for Third Earth is written. So the chain of events of the original show won’t be taken into considearation

To be perfectly honest I never expected them to be. They’re doing a re-imagining not a remake. They might take the characters, themes, and ideas from the old show, but they’re going to make whole new stories.

As long as they respect the old material, Keep the characters’ personalities mostly intact, and have good writing I’ll be happy.

To be blunt… If they aren’t going to take the events of the original into consideration, then why bother to take personalities from the original into consideration?

I don’t know if I like the whole “kingdom of ThunDera” idea. I could see a couple of ways it could work, but I can see just as many ways that would make it horrible.

well if they just kept the stories from the original why even make a new one? they could just air the old one a whole lot cheaper.

I’m not too keen on this whole “everything happens on Third Earth” thing.

This would make alot more sense if it was to take place during Lion-O’s heir’s time, several years later…well after the fact Old Thundera self-destructed many years earlier.

I could understand Snarf not speaking, I could understand Thundera not self-destructing right away, but to have everything on Third Earth from the beginning? Well, this isn’t Thundercats anymore. It’s a glorified Fanfiction from a rich fanboy with Daddy’s money behind it.

I’m sorry but I’m not happy anymore. I thought I could overlook many things and I can, but to have no Thundera in the first place? Well, that ruins it.

I’m sure I’m not the only one to feel this way.

P.S. how much longer do we have to keep doing this Captcha thing? This is a paid fandom web-site. I could understand a CAPTCHA if this was a free-to-use forum bulletin forum software, but this isn’t. Isn’t this what having new forum moderators were for? To weed out spam posts on their shift?

Posts have also said “This sounds like Avatar: the Last Airbender” and since one of the people working on this was involved in Avatar, this feels like not much done in the re-imagining department.

Maybe re-imagination team should have titled the show:Thundercats: The Last Heir Bender
