“The Wolfrat” is the obvious standout episode to highlight Tygra’s skills as saving the day. He makes the antidote to the shrinking potion in his lab.

“Pumm-Ra” does give him some credit, Jaga tells Lion-O that Tygra is right and should be the one to go after Lion-O argued that he’s the one with the sword. Also, in that episode, Tygra pins down Mumm-Ra don’t forget!

Other episodes that give some mention of Tygra’s skills include the designing of Cat’s Lair, as well as:

“Return Of The Driller” - Tygra and Panthro are jointly identified as being responsible for this new fuel.
“Thundercubs” - Tygra designs the modifications for the Feliner, Panthro says, “what you can design, I can build.”
“Crystal Canyon” - we see Tygra working on some plan for something, I forget what.

As for his weapon being a whip, that’s an interesting point. From a kid’s perspective it’s not the most obviously dangerous weapon, although it certainly can do damage. On the other hand, it does turn him invisible (although not initially, in the early episodes he turns invisible without his whip!). Leoric in Visionaries also had a whip for a weapon, and frequently used it to pull an opponent’s weapon out of his hand, or another opponent’s legs out from under him.

Believe me, I never forget about him pinning Mumm-Ra in “Pumm-Ra”!
Oh, and I did notice him turning invisible without the whip in earlier episodes, and in some not-so-early as well (but all first season eps).

When you take into account Tygra’s mind powers, invisibility and intelligence he really should have been written as the most accomplished Thundercat of the group.

Oh, and I did notice him turning invisible without the whip in earlier episodes, and in some not-so-early as well (but all first season eps).

And pretty much all Leonard Starr episodes. It was Peter Lawrence who first made it the whip that makes Tygra invisible. The first hint of how all of Starr’s great achievements with the show would be undone by Lawrence . . .

I agree 100%.
It’s a shame Peter Lawrence didn’t like Tygra. Personally I thought he was probably the most interesting Thundercat.

Tygra definitely had a great design.

As far as designs go I wouldn’t say I disliked Panthro’s colour scheme but he would have been far better in black/dark colours instead of the grey blue scheme. There was already a lot of blue in the other characters so a colour that contrasted to the others would have really made him standout more. He could have been the awesome guy in black character like Snake Eyes in G.I. Joe.

The R.O.C.K.S. discussion thread that Liam, Mark M and myself have started is a perfect “excuse” to watch such old shows. In our earlier discussion we watched some episodes of “Transformers” and I enjoyed them a lot.

As you said, Panthro was more of a bad-ass, thanks to his martial arts, Nunchucks, temper, and, probably the biggest reason why he was most likely chosen to appear over Tygra… he drives the ThunderTank!!! The two are inseparable and R/B also most likely wanted the tank to appear as often as possible to promote sales of its toy.

I started watching old shows I had never seen before called Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z and I love it. I wish I had watched it when it was originally broadcast.

I always found the Panthro and Thundercats toys ironic as Panthro was quite difficult to get into the drivers seat.

That’s a very good observation! Panthro probably had the “blandest” design of all the other TC, who were all quite colorful. Panthro was just grey and blue. A little black thrown into his design might have looked amazing. And would go well with his martial arts nature. How about making Panthro completely black? Like the actual black panther. Hmmmm. Maybe we should try and Photoshop some different colors onto a Panthro screengrab.

It was IMPOSSIBLE to get him in the driver’s seat!! Poor guy would usually have to end up in the back, operating the laser cannons. LOL! :biggrin

So, if I got this right, Leonard Starr liked Tygra and seemed to be developing his character strongly, and then Peter Lawrence came, didn’t like him and treated him like rubish?I was never familiar with the writers and crew.

I think a black character wouldn’t have fit a good band back in the 80s… you know, because black is dark and evil and all that.

I think he also becomes invisible without the whip while underground in “The Time Capsule” right before confronting Mole Master. I’m not sure who wrote that episode though.

Back to the Panthro design I find it interesting the changes they made from his earlier designs. He looked much more human in the face/ears and obviously had a dark complexion. Now that you mention it, you’re right. He uses his bolowhip to turn invisible at the start of the epsiode, when the TCs go each one a different wayt o look for the time capsule, and then turns invisible without it before Mole Master shows up.

Yes it would be great to photoshop ome colours on him. We could make Panthro completely black/light grey with maybe some silver trim on his outfit and weapons. Black would make him more like a ninja and like I said a bit like Snake Eyes.
