I recently picked up another Captain Shiner and noticed that some of the color shades were a bit different. From my judgement it is not that either are faded as the green of his shirt/pants are the same on both figures as well as the skin color. The pictures may not show the differences as well as I would like, but the one figures straps are more gold colored, the red is a more vibrant shade and the shades of blue on the boots are different. I was wondering if anyone else has noticed any differences similar to this in their collections. Would this be considered a variant? If not are there any known variants for Captain Shiner?
Nice observation, adssse! I had never noticed that but after reading your post I checked my 5 Capt Shiners and you are absolutely right. There is a slight color variation, especially the blue/purple part at the back of his boots. One is slightly darker, almost purplish while the other is more navy blue.
I also noticed that the darker boot version’s feet are slightly bigger than the lighter one. Is that the case with yours too?
Perhaps our friend thunderianroyalguard could give us his input. He is one of the most knowledgeable people when it comes to variants.
I went to double check on mine, but the feet are the same size on both of mine. They appear to be the same mold as on both the left foot has a “1” and the right foot has a “2”. Do the numbers on both of your figures match? Which numbers are they?
On 4 of my figures, the numbers are like yours (1 and 2) but one figure has the number “2” on both feet. Strange! I’ve always wondered what the numbers signified.

HA! Well, in this case I can only offer more questions than awnsers; half of my Shiner figures are the darker variant. Funny thing is, I also have 1 that has a dark AND a light leg:
Since we are on the subject of the numbers on the bottom of the feet. I was always under the impression that these were the mold numbers. Each time a mold needed to be changed for any reason (number of uses, design change, etc) the number would be incremented. Does this sound plausible?
Sounds quite plausible to me. The different numbers on the same figure might also suggest that each body part was produced in different part of the factory and painted there as well before finally being assembled. This would explain why some Capt. Shiners have two different colored legs.
I never thought about the number representing a different part of the plant or different location. That is reasonable as well. Too bad we don’t have an LJN employee that could straighten us out!
I dont know if anyone else has noticed this … but ive also noticed a difference in monkian figures … both mine have identical feet stamps but one has a more pale body whereas the other is tanned all over … now i dont know if maybe this is just age fading but i have seen the same differences when looking at monkians on ebay too. I will try and post pics later or cover it in my upcoming mutants video review lol

Agreed. I always enjoy viewing all of the variants! I would still like to get my hands on a Playful Monkian at some point, but the prices always seem so steep.
I’m like that with playful jackalman … I really want the playful jackalman and have been eyeing the carded one on eBay up for a while lol .. His colour scheme is so much more accurate
