Birthday Memories

Like so many other people in the world, i look forward to the annual celebration of my birth, no matter how old i get (though, in recent days, i’ve started to lose sight of why i look forward to it). But lately, it feels like i’m having a hard time remembering the good times of said Birthday (which is October 8th, by the way).

Take this year, for example; it’s currently in the middle of my Birthday, and i have to say, it’s not going as i would have liked. I’ve tried to put myself in the mood for this day, but that train of thought has strayed off the tracks a few times, and now, when i actually made a list of things i wanted to start the day with (which involved me getting up early), it feels like everything had a consequence that i didn’t foresee.

I wanted to put my dog outside first and get that out of the way, but, as it turns out, that a man was supposed to come over and work on the backyard fence and as a result this caused some tension between me and my mother, because i didn’t put my dog in a cage while he was out there. This was bad for two reasons; one, because she and i got into an argument about two other things just yesterday, so i find it upsetting that this tension is starting to ruin my Birthday mood; and two; She claims that she told me about the man coming over, even though i don’t remember her saying anything about that. She did say happy birthday a few times; once right after she left to go put my dog in the cage with hers and another time when she gave me my birthday gifts, but they just didn’t feel like she meant them, not as much as the text message i got from my father at any rate.

I tried to carry on with my early to-do list by eating my breakfast, a specific brand of cereal, but that moment just didn’t stick with me, nor did any of the other things on my list. I even had a few moments of thought where i felt that my own grandparents forgot my Birthday (even though i’m certain that they didn’t), along with my brother and sister (again, i’m sure that’s not the case). But i guess my biggest issue is that it felt like my mother cared more about an expensive fence job than her youngest son’s birthday (i can just feel it in my bones that she’ll do no such thing with my Siblings B-Days).

Later on, though, i felt that i was making a big deal out of the first half of my Birthday and that the day could still be more memorable later on. That would be nice, but i just wish the day went more according to my original plan, especially when i got my presents.

Another issue, i’ve had in the past is that I was always forgetting about my mother’s birthday, and my father’s and my grandparents’ (in fact, i still don’t know my grandparents’ birthdays or my nieces’ and nephew’s for that matter, not for certain at any rate), does that make me a bad person?

And the weird part is, i don’t think i ever had a hard time remembering my siblings’ birthdays. My brother’s birthday is just two days after mine and my sister, I’ve always known that her birthday was in December and close to Christmas. So why did it take me so long to remember my parents’ birthdays, especially since it seemed relative easy enough to make a mental reminder (my mother was born on the same day of her birth month as my sister was on her’s and the same goes for my father with me)

I don’t think that you’re a bad person at all for not remembering birthdays. It’s easier to remember things associated with things about your experiences that are important to you.

Even though it seems like things did not go as you planned, I wish you the best on your birthday!

Happy birthday, srebak!

Thanks you guys and, for the record, it did feel like things got a little better later on and hopefully, i’ll only remember the good points of this year when i look back on it next year.

No problem, my friend.

Before anything else, a very happy belated birthday to you!

See, the thing with plans is they rarely turn out the way we imagine them to. And if actually plan to be happy on a specific day, the opposite will most likely happen. Even though there are many reasons to be happy on that day, we are so focused on trying not to be upset that we inadvertently end up noticing only the bad things that are happening. It is the same reason why many people are often more depressed and stressed on Valentinte’s day than any other normal day. We try too hard to be romantic. Emotions and feelings cannot be forced or planned.

So I would advise you to not worry to much about it nor blame yourself for anything. Treat your birthday as any other day. Enjoy all the good things that happen and try not to get too upset by the not-so-good things.
