So a little over a year ago, my wife and I were going through a hard time, and it came down to my toys and collecting. To make a long story short I had to sell off most of my collections.
Thundercats being one of them. The collection took me over 10 years to build and there were many custom figures as well as rarities in it.
I wound up selling the collection for $2,000, which I regret but it was something I had to do. To this day i still kick myself and hate myself for selling of something I truely adored. It was a piece of my childhood that I probably will never be able to replace.
In short if anyone ever thinks of selling there collection let me know. I would buy back my collect for more than I sold it for just because of the sentimental feelings that went with it.
I’ve had to do the same thing before, although mine wasn’t that large. I had basically completed most of the figures, still was missing items like Pumyra’s whip and a few other things, but I was very pleased with it. I put it together as a sideline project when I was collecting stuff like Gijoe and G1 Transformers. It was really amazing I was able to find a lot of stuff in mixed lots. Well I ran into a month in my planning that I was literally going to have zero dollars in my bank account. I panicked, and I realized that if I didn’t sell almost my entire toy collection completely, I wouldn’t have a place to live. So, I sold it all. Transformers, Thundercats, Gijoe, just about everything.
I’m much more selective now, and I keep a much tighter budget on my spending. I’ve been slowly piecing together a new collection, but it will take years probably.
Everybody’s got a price. If someone brought a suitcase of $10 million of genuine cold hard cash for an entire collection, very few people are going to turn that down.
Of course that’s never going to happen. But hypothetically speaking, pretty much almost everybody that says they wouldn’t part with it has never seen that kind of money in front of them before.
I’m going through a similar problem, but mine is more space related than financial. I’ve been hording toys for years, hoping that some day I would move into a big place where I could properly display it all. 15 years later I have moved into that big place and I’ve found there is no way I’d be able to display everything I’ve amassed. I’m slowly selling off odds and ends of my toy collection on eBay right now (no Thundercats, though, sorry). I’m hoping I don’t regret this in a few years.
Your kids will always have those happy memories of Disneyland and toys can always be replaced. I’ve had to replace collections several times over. But your kids happy memories are priceless.
I dont regret selling my collection…yes its basically all sold except a few pieces (Cats Lair, Graded Snarf Plush) but overall I dont regret it one bit.
Got my own gold and silver treasure chest to show for…yes literally a treasure chest. I like me shiny stuff now…history in my hands
Gives the girls something for the future too and a lesson on what real money is
As much as I love ThunderCats, I can’t say I would never sell my modest vintage collection if faced with the decision. If that day ever comes, I’ll keep you in mind lostdwarf.
Thanks I appreciate that. Ive built 2 star wars sets, 2 MOTU sets sold them both. Had a complete ghostbusters set sold that, way too cheap and I had a 82-89 GI Joe set with all vehicles complete that I sold. But non of those bother me as much as the Thundercats did. I mean I don’t even want an old thundercats figure in my house, not because I hate them (definately dont) but because it’s all or nothing. I am a completionist, when I start something, buy something or do something, I need it complete.
For instance my daughters zhuzhu pets, I spent 2 months finding all the playsets and hampsters for her to play with. Call it nuts but I just felt like it would be incomplete and not right.
Ive started to collect animation cels as a nice reminder of my toys. So far I have a bunch of Ghostbusters and He-Man/She-Ra, a few random cartoon, and an original sketch of Snaft which is one of my favorite pieces of art that I have, next to the Ghostbusters. In my thundercats collection I use to have a 1986 Burger King kids meal, animation cel of the kids meal box. I posted the pics on here before. It was a 1 of a kind piece and I know I can never get that back. The seller had only 2 of them and they were 1 of each box. That got sold in with my collection.
All in all, the new release of the Bandai figures is gonna be awesome because it’s something I can control and actually put together without endless hours, years, decades of searching for certain pieces. I look foward to the future as I close the door to the past.
@lostdwarf - I remember that cell. Man, that thing was absolutely awesome. I think I even sent you a message once wanting to buy it! Any chance you still have the buyer’s contact info? I’d love to try and get that one.
Could I personally sell my collection? That’s a tough one to answer. A lot of my figures are the originals that I played with growing up, so there’s certainly a lot of sentimental value there. That’s why I am still on the fence about this new show! Now I know how the OT Star Wars guys feel!
Permit me to extend my sympathy about your valuable collection loss…
I know it must have been a difficult thing to do, however the animated cells is a great way to replace your memories.
The cause however was an importnat one, the happiness of children goes before anything else, probably i would have done the same thing with the exception of not selling entirey everything!!!
My only regret is not buying a couple of AFA figs when I had the chance at a decent price. Now they are rediculuosly over priced - $4000 for an AFA 85 Lion-O?
I’ll see what I can do to shrink the size if it Manny, sorry for the large pic.
So here is the story of this find. The lady (she was about 70ish) that I purchased this from told me her friend worked for the company that designed the kids meal boxes for the Burger King promotion back in the 80’s.
There were two main people who worked on the production. Her lady friend and another guy. Each of them took 2 prints from the production. From my knowledge of what she told me, there are only 4 total of these prints. One for each of the happy meal boxes. Making this cel a 1 of 1. She told me she’s had this about 15 years and that her friend was getting rid of them and asked if she wanted them or something like that. Last week this cel was up on ebay along with the Cheetara box cel.
I put bids on both of the cels but only won this one. (hoping someone from this board purchased the other one) She also had original unused uncirculated happy meal boxes. Which I also purchased from her. It was the set of 4. She mentioned the name JIM BOLLES as being the creator but I haven’t had a chance to research this.
The cel came framed like in the picture and on the back on the frame is a stamp of a NYC framing company. I would love to know more about this. Oh btw the framed cel cost me $48 the 4 unused uncirculated boxes cost me $35 (the cel when it was listed on ebay had errors in the listing (i.e Thunder cats origninal cell) which I guess I was the only one who picked up on that. The boxes I expected to pay around $35 I’ve been wanting them for years. Probably my greatest Thundercats find ever!!!
There’s a thread on here about it somewhere. I have no idea what it was worth but judging by what regular cels go for on ebay vs. what extended size cels go for on ebay I estimated it $700-$1000 if not more. There was only 1 ever made for that box and that was it.
I wish I still had the collector’s name and info of who I sold my collection to. I’de love to buy that back from him if he’s willing to part with it. Like I said my collection was very unusual because of the rare one of a kind items that were in it.
Money really is the root of all evil, not Mumm-Ra:mummra:
My biggest regret is letting my parents throw away my plastic Thundercats sword years ago. ::sniff::
Thankfully I still have a home movie of me and my cousin playing with it, with our parents encouraging us to say the Thundercats chant, lol. My cousin sounded a bit tougher than me though, being a boy and all. I just sounded cute, lol.
