Anyone on these forums watch Father Ted..i dont know if its shown in the states but here in the UK i just watched an episode for the first time in ages tonight and just had to see if anyone else watches this irish comedy as it had me in stitches tonight. Heres a link to a clip to if youve never seen the show before..so funny its about a simple priest (Dougal), an alcholic priest (Jack)and Father Ted who is the more sensible one out of the bunch. Yes, I love Father Ted! I am a big fan of English comedy myself. I took a chance and bought the entire Father Ted series on DVD. I am glad I did. Great comedy.
There is one episode called “Kicking Bishop Brennan Up The Arse”. I almost pissed myself the first time I saw this one.

I’m born and raised in the US. I just have always liked English comedy. There is a station here called PBS that would play BBC stuff late at night, which is how I got hooked. Then later on when I got Directv, i got BBC America as part of the package, so I watch a lot of that as well.
My all time favorite is “Keeping up appearances”. I am currently watching “The Vicar of Dibley”, and that is great as well. Thanks to Netflix, I can now get even more English Comedy.
Yes, the guy who played the bishop did an amazing job. My favorite part is when they walk outside and the huge photo of Ted kicking the Bishop up the ass is outside the house. That was hilarious!!
Hey Alex, thats good to see that so many of our shows in the UK are reaching the states, i wouldnt of thought you had heard of any of them shows! Keeping up appearances is really good as well. Have you seen only fools and horses?
No not yet but I do have it added to my NetFlix account. I have been told it is one of, if not THE, funniest English comedy series ever made. I am sure I will like it.
Oh yeah and of course Mr. Bean is awesome. I love Rowan Atkinson’s work. The American Bean movie(s) however are not so great, which is really ironic.
Father Ted was fantastic: its a shame that the main actor died young (IIRC, the main reason was stress), meaning the series was cut short. Gently surreal comedy at its best, with plenty of excellent performances: for example, the guy who plays Father Jack is a highly regarded Irish actor who normally plays much more ‘serious’ roles. The best episode is probably ‘Speed 3’, where instead of a bus…its a milk float. 8)
However, my favourite comedy of all time is still Blackadder, followed by Fawlty Towers, The Young Ones and Red Dwarf (pre-Kochanski, which is when the series went rapidly downhill). I also quite enjoyed Coupling.
If you like Father Ted, you should check out the The IT Crowd, by the same team: similar brand of comedy, as you’d expect.
Yea i heard about the same team doing the IT Crowd but still havent really sat down and watched it yet, just bits and clips, i must check it out see what its like.
I’m gonna have to disagree with you there. The 7th series wasn’t great. It drifted a bit too far into the realms of comedy-drama. Series 8 on the other was a return to form in my opinion. It introduced a new dynamic to the show and freshened things up a touch I feel.
‘Red Dwarf’ is a classic show and one of my favourites along with ‘Blackadder’ and ‘Mr Bean’ (Anything with Rowan Atkinson really. I’d put him up there with Chaplin).

Have to agree to disagree, then: I thought the 8th series was the worst by a huge margin. Then again, its been a long time since I saw it, so perhaps I’d feel differently now. Been meaning to buy the various series on DVD, so that might be the time for me to re-evaluate (though I’ve got a whole crapload of 80s cartoons to get through first: Mysterious Cities of Gold is the one I’m looking forward to, as it looks to be stuffed with extras :D).

I think Rowan Atkinson is a superb comic actor, and Blackadder is probably my favourite comedy series of all time, but I’ve always hated Mr Bean. Very irritating. However, I think thats more the specific genre of comedy he’s using (slapstick, I guess?) as opposed to it being a poorly made show. Then again, I can enjoy the physical comedy of somebody like Jackie Chan, though thats probably an unfair comparison given the athletic ability of Chan in his prime, which isn’t matched by any English comedian (though Michael Crawford was often impressive, in acrobatic terms, during Some Mother’s Do Ave Em).
Thats funny about Rowan atkinson because for me, I had to force myself to finish watching Black Adder 1, yet I absolutely love Mr. Bean.
At first I thought it was because I was so used to seeing the Mr Bean character that I just couldn’t see Rowan playing a different part, but that turned out not to be the case as I love his work on “Not the 9 o’clock news” and his stand up material.
I’ve got the rest of the Black Adder series on its way through NetFlix so hopefully the others are better.
In other Britcom news; I just finished watching the “Vicar of Dibley” series, and it is absolutely fantastic. The characters are superb. I am going to end up buying the series off eBay if I can get a good deal, as I will definitely be wanting to watch it again someday.
The first series of Blackadder is very different to the rest, and is generally regarded as the weakest of the four. Atkinson is effectively playing a completely different character than the one most fans are familiar with from 2, 3 and 4. Personally I think the first series has some merit, but it took me a while to appreciate it - I’d certainly agree with the consensus that later series are much better.
You should be pleasantly surprised when you see the next series.
