I received this e-mail earlier today from a guy called [b]Brian Lane[b], e-mail address dragonlane555@yahoo.com:
It sounds to me like this guy’s account has fallen victim to one of our anti-spam measures. I’ve e-mailed him back and explained the situation, and told him I’d pass this on to you guys to look into.
I think the worst thing about what we’re having to do is keep seeing things like this happen - I’m also aware of a friend of Angie’s who has now been banned twice in our spam account pruning! I’m not for a second suggesting that we have any choice or that what we’re doing is wrong, but just saying that it’s a shame to see things like this keep happening…
Anyways, if you guys could look into this for me, that would be awesome - many thanks!
I looked him up on the Control panel at Search for Users but couldn’t find him. I got the ‘No matches Found’ message.
I assume his account was banned and then deleted. But after you have banned someone how long does it take for his account to be permanently erased?
He isn’t on the ‘View Banned Users’ either, so this must have happened a few days ago.
On the other hand, Movie Prime, is an account name that none of us would have banned. It isn’t the usual ‘fwgfwgwqg’ spammers’ name! Even accidentally it is difficult to have been deleted by one of us. I don’t think we are so careless
Oh dear, I hope it wasn’t me that got him by accident. That parts thread gets a lot of spam posts and I clear them quite frequently. Would hate to think I ticked the box on his post in the lot and inadvertently banned him. My apologies if I did, and I will be more careful regardless :liono
Purrsia, if it was you, don’t worry, these things happen especially when we have to battle on a daily basis with spammers and do a lot of banning..Sometimes mistakes are made.
What can we do to rectify the situation now? maybe we should ask him to make another account.
Its unfortunate that this happened but I hope the deleted user understands that while these are rare occasions it can happen. Truthfully I’d much rtaher ban/deleted suspicious account than let them slide and have it be a spammer.
If it was done by mistake then they can contact us.If he can re-register and let us know his username and Ill keep a lookout on his account.
I hate to say this but if users make an account with a suspicious username and email then it will get banned/deleted. Ive pretty much had it with spammers and I’m taking all measures to see spam accounts gone
Thanks for looking into this gang, I really appreciate it!
Question - is there a way that one of us can effectively “re-create” this guy’s account by creating a new account with his old username, and then e-mail him the details? Obviously we’d have to pick a new password for him which we’d have to tell him to change once he’d logged in…
To me it would just seem as though we’d taken a more proactive role in trying to rectify the problem than saying “Sorry, looks like we banned you by accident, please re-register!” - please can you guys LMK if this is workable?
I believe it can be done…all i would need is his original username and his email and birth date (he can provide it or I can do a random birthdate). We’ll provide him with the password and he can change it to what he wants
This is excellent, MannyC - thanks so much for all your help! I’ve just e-mailed this guy to let him know, so hopefully he should be able to return to using our forums normally.
