How can they eat if their mechanical critters?
They’ve never been shown to eat. The best fannon explanation is that they raise crops to barter for things they need like raw materials and lubricants.
Or that its redundant programming.
At the end of the episode when the TCats first meet the Berbils, they all sit down for a feast at the end of the show. I don’t recall offhand if the berbils are shown actually eating, but they did all have food in front of them…
Maybe the berbils aren’t purely mechanical. Maybe they are part organic and their organic componants require food.. Or maybe the juices from the fruit they grow act as lubricant.
As a kid I never even thought about those things, but as an adult these little things really stand out and I find that I need to qualify them somehow… 
They look like robotic koalas.
They always annoyed me, I could never understand what the hell they were saying. =
I always thought they were cute. I wished that they came out with a Berbil teddy bear. They looked to me like mechanical Ewoks (and I loved the Ewoks – I was 5, sue me.)
Well, seeing as how their part organic, maybe they do require some sort of sustenance. Though how they would eat it is beyond me.
I always liked the Berbils. As for them not eating what they grow, well, I have no answer for that. Even though they’re mechanical, I always took it for granted that they did eat, at the end of the “Berbils” story where they and the Cats are sitting down to a feast to celebrate their newly-minted friendship as well as the start of the construction of the Cats’ Lair. 
That’s an awesome idea. Who do we petition?

Yea maybe the Berbils are some kind of cyborg - just like the BORG in Star Trek 
I’m not a Berbils fan but it’s OK that they are existing - even if I sometimes felt that their only job was to get recuded by the TC 
Btw. I never got along with those “Space Police Girl” riding on her “Spacebike”… In my opinion that character didn’t fit into the TC Universe, but thats a other storry
About the Berbils
Lets not jump to conclusions here. They dont necessarily have to have been born robotic. It might be that they were born missing limbs and the prosthetics were added after the fact.

That was one of the first things I thought about when I saw em “They’re robots, why do they need food”… I never liked em though, their weird way of talking was really annoying IMO.
