2009 Fandom Awards - announcing this year’s winners
Hi all, I am pleased to announce that this year’s awards winners have been voted on and confirmed by the section managers. First let me say what a pleasure it has been to be the overseer of the awards this year. None of it would have been possible without the contributions of some special people. In this message I’ll be thanking those who pitched in, will review the changes we made to the awards process this year and will talk about some of the achievements made by the team.

RD who managed the fan fiction section with extreme diligence and energy. RD collected an absolute ton of nominations for his section and this has led to a comprehensive list of awesome fan fics. Even if you didn’t vote or have never read a fan fic before, now is your chance to dive in. Check out the nominee list for some incredible reads.

saltygirl aka Janet who managed the fan art section this year. This is Janet’s first foray into the awards process and she did a great job of scouring the net for great examples of fan art and by actively soliciting nominees from fans. Janet is an accomplished artist herself and her broad appreciation of all forms of fan art gave us an exciting list of nominees to choose from. Thank you Janet!

Purrsia who as always has been a guiding force in these awards and a calm and steady voice when tempers inevitably flare up with something like this. She also created some fabulous nominee badges this year and by all rights should have been nominated in an awards category all on her own for that work. Thanks as always Purrsia!

Azmom who helped whittle down the fan site and community award categories this year to create a revitalized list that made it a more manageable section.

Rob Potts at Hard Hero ( www.hardhero.com ) who kindly donated a Mumm-Ra the Everliving statue to the awards. Hard Hero became the first official sponsor of the fandom awards and if you haven’t heard of them, well, they’re the team who have brought us the official ThunderCats statues, the first licensed merchandise to hit shelves in almost 25 years. Hard Hero donated a free statue to the fan site that is voted ‘Best Fan Site of the Decade’. This remarkable statue is also available for pre-order now on Hard Hero’s website and is due for shipping in the third quarter of 2010.
Changes made to the process this year:
As our goal this year was to run the process more quickly while increasing fan participation the decision was made to move the awards headquarters to facebook. This was done to take advantage of the popularity of facebook over the older style yahoo groups and to get more publicity and accessability.
We also used a third party voting software with the same goal of accessibility in mind. We chose esurveyspro.com which allows us to post polls that don’t require registration but that at the same time have a number of security controls available to help us ensure that there are no mistakes made in the tally of votes in each category. This option allowed us to bring in voters from all venues including the fan forums, yahoo group, facebook group and though word of mouth. Looking at it now at the end of the process I am pleased with the choice of esurveyspro.com and think it gave us the best balance overall of allowing accessibility for voting, ease of use and security of the voting process. It’s not bullet proof but I think most will agree that it is the better choice for our purposes.
Achievements of the team

One of the most telling achievement is the level of voting this year vs. previous years. Thanks to the efforts of the team and the supporters of the awards we saw a tremendous leap in the number of voters. There were a total of 70 voters for fan site and community, 32 voters for art awards and 27 voters for the fan fic awards. This is more that 300% participation over the prior year!

Acquisition of a sponsor and prizes. The donation from Hard Hero spurred the team to add more prizes for the award winners. Both RD and saltygirl have got prizes on hand for the winners we’re announcing below including a hand written and signed story by RD himself, some T-Cat print materials too. The artist saltygirl will provide an exclusive print of a piece she is working on too. One of a kind!

Over 260 fans joined the facebook headquarters for the awards in the short time we ran the nomination and voting process - which took only about six weeks from start to finish.
