Here is the color version of that map from the pilot material section if anyone is interested. I am not sure if this was colored in by someone or taken from a comic:? (I hope I am not posting something that is already on the site, I didn’t see it.)
It would be really good if we could expand that map. I’ve noticed it dosn’t include the Ice kingdom (queen tartara, or whatever she’s called) or the Tuskens abode.
and Firerock Mountain as well.
There’s a couple of things missing, they must have been hard to place.
There is obviously a lot more to Third Earth then what is on that map. For example, “where” exactly have the Berserkers sailed in from?
It is safe to say though that the map was done early on in production so there are going to be a lot of things missing.
Also, I don’t think the creators thought that some 20 odd years later a bunch of Thundercats fanatics would be trying to figure out the exact specifics of Third Earth.![]()
I still reckon that during the end of first earth and the beginning of second, something must have happened to make the planet smaller. Successive super nova’s would be a bit much (real tempermental star). I don’t know, brains turned to mush.
Would it be safe to say though that the Cats Lair is located in what is now known as North America? Notice how it is separated by a body of water and on the east side there is Mumm-Ra’s pyramid, treasure ruins definitely looks to be around the same area as Greece and on the northeast a range of mountains…perhaps The Alps?
Well, it is very possible that the end of First Earth could have been the result of a nuclear war, or perhaps a giant asteroid hitting Earth, causing the same effect that destroyed the dinosaurs.
A massive negative effect on the atmosphere could result in a wide spread die off of land, so technically the planet its self would not be smaller, but the amount of land compared to water would be a lot less then during first Earth. So in that sense, the world would be “smaller”. Less land available to live on.
Another idea I have had is that if an asteroid did hit 1st Earth, maybe it could have changed the distance between the planet and the sun, producing radical changes on Earths inhabitants via evolution.:?
We also have Ice Ages to consider…
That is impossible to answer. Given the scale of that map (which can be decuded somewhat from things like the rivers) the entire area could fit into any number of places. With only two rivers and a couple of mountains ranges to go on it would be anywhere with Europe, Asia, united states or even one country such as New Zealand.
I was thinking about this the other day (bored moment, what can I say), is that assuming this 1000 years has passed that Mumm-ra mentioned, it would be possible that our sun, could have entered a super nova (just the one), which would make it afterwards quite a weak sun (which relates to what Panthro said). This dosn’t necessarily have to liquidate our planet, instead it just drasically scorches it, wiping away most organic life on the planet, minus some robotical bears that disney created and never managed to sell. However the effects of the supernova don’t just scorch the planet, the shift in the suns gravitational field, sightly shifts the planets course, squashing it’s eliptical orbit even more, making for very intense summers and winters (globally, not just in the nice places). The extreme seasons make for a very rapid regrown, but also over time the additional gravitational pull (during the months when it’s close to the sun), slighly crushes/compacts the planet. This compacting, makes the planet significantly smaller and subseqently more dense, displacing the gravitational pull of the sun, sending back into a similar orbit (thought no identical) to what it already was. Back in a similar orbit, what remaints of life remains on the planet, continues to repopulate and subsequently read adapt to a different earth. Also this time, Mummra cackles in his pyramid and the defunc disney merchandise start to build their own villages.
Well that’s my theory anyway and i’m sticking by it.
don’t mind me re-opening an old old thread
i remember reading an interview online with Peter Lawrence where he confirmed that Third Earth is our planet after 2 nuclear holocausts, hence, 3rd earth, the third epoch of life on the planet. the producers just felt a nuclear holocaust scenario would be too heavy to mention and bum out the kiddies.
also, in the original written proposal for the show, it was stated that the Thundercats crash land in Africa.
it would be great to see an expanded map which includes Tuskania, White Pyramid, Darkside, etc.
Do you think you could backtrack to unearth that interview Berbillion? That would be good for the archives.
I’ve thought of the Third Earth maps we’ve seen, perhaps like pre Galileo scientific ponderings, no one had gone to the “uncharted” areas, or like areas such as Darkside, were taboo, therefore no one set foot there. The known Third Earth is pretty hairy, and the unknown would be a bit much for even the most seasoned Thundercat explorer.![]()
Also, I don’t think the creators thought that some 20 odd years later a bunch of Thundercats fanatics would be trying to figure out the exact specifics of Third Earth.
God bless 'em for it too.
At least you can breathe in space there…:liono
i’ve seen a link to the interview posted on this board before, i’ll post it if i can find it for sure.
i’m really looking for the “Pilot Proposal” for the TV show. it was online for awhile this year, but the site went down and i forgot to save it. it had a lot of interesting tidbits that were planned that didn’t make it, and further background that was not discussed in the show. some of what i remember is that Mumm-Ra was 7,000 years old, and learned of the Sword Of Omens during his first incarnation while he was “mapping the heavens.” What i mentioned earlier about the Cats crash landing in Africa. the Berbils growing trees called “Tingo Trees,” which the sap is made into a celebratory drink. the Miggit Swarm Monster’s body being made up of millions of vicious, biting gnats. the River of Despair originally having furnaces at each side that when you stoke them with diamonds, create the Bridge Of Light. and a handful of other things i am forgetting.
If anyone saved the Pilot Proposal while it was online, please post it here!
Sorry for necropost…
I started a Third Earth map this weekend after reading that no one has done a complete version with all the little places from the episodes. I watched the series and came up with this:

What’s next is naming all of the places and adding a sweet looking Thundercats symbol compass showing the cardinal points. Not sure whether to use a numbering system (a number near each location) and have a list of the names to the bottom left corner above the mileage scale, or just type the names next to each location (if the lettering doesn’t cover too much of the map).
Ideas? This map is revision 4 so far… some episodes got me thinking of where to place the locations because of scenery, comments of how far the next location was, or from people being able to spot things from a distance (like Snarf seeing Mumm-Ra from the Berbil village as the mummie’s flying to Castle Plundarr from his Pyramid).

Hoooo!

Third Earth is indeed a strange place. There were places on the old “ThunderCats” series that were never included in the planet’s map, like the Baleful Swamp.
This version of the Third Earth map comes from the ThunderCats Magazine series published by Welsh Publishing in the late '80s.
It is also present in one of the Thundercats annuals.
Also, in answer to the question of “is Third Earth OUR planet Earth” - yes it is. In the episode “The Last Day” we see a graphic of the planet, and it has very recognisable continent shapes!
Most definitely.
Agreed. In addition Starr has said that it is our earth in interviews.
