DEFENDERS OF THE EARTH! Appreciation AND Continuity Order

Ah yes, when I think of ‘Bit’n’Chips’ I keep just thinking of Rick and co inside Dynak X. In fact the scene of Flash and Phantom ramming the power station withb the sword ship would be awesome and a nice tribute to the 80’s Flash movie when Flash impaled Ming at the end of the movie.

I really dislike the league of flesh and blood.

Doing quite a bit of walking myself, I am walking about 8 miles everyday.

Bits ‘N’ Chips is a great episode because everybody has their moment to shine, well, apart from Kshin. There’s so much in it, it’s hard to believe all that happens in a single 20min episode! Every friend that I’ve re-introduced to the show, I’ve shown them this episode right after the first two, and nobody has ever believed me when I told them it wasn’t the third episode aired!

I really dislike the league of flesh and blood.

The episode was a good idea in theory, but it was mishandled. The romance between Flash and Kayla was about as subtle as a brick through the window, and the way Flash figured out they were robots seemed a bit sudden. It’s one of those episodes that had the potential to be a lot more than it was. A bit like “The Revenge Of Astra”, which again focused on Flash! Boy, was he unlucky in getting the starring role in episodes that didn’t live up to their potential. The only one I can think of that centred on him that really was great was “Flash Times Four”. Although of course, if you count the original Flash as well as the four clones, the title should have been “Flash Times Five”!

Doing quite a bit of walking myself, I am walking about 8 miles everyday.

Trumps me - although when I finally have my ingrowing toenail op and stop my swimming, I’ll probably make up for it by doing more walking.

As it turned out, it’s too late now to do that walk, and I have something else to do (a CD arrived this morning, I need to put the tracks onto my hard drive, which means switching computers for an hour or so).

I watched another episode of C.O.P.S. earlier - and it’s finally hit me why the character of Dr BadVibes (who I never saw as a kid, except in the end credits), has been burned onto my retina for the last several days - there’s something of Kenneth Williams in him! The look, the voice (albeit with an American accent), all right, it’s not an absolute resemblance, but he could have played him quite well.

The more I don’t think all of it especially the shrinking down and going in the computer would work in a movie, I still love that episode, it is one of my favourites if not my favourite. when I think of DOTE it’s the one that comes to mind and if I was going to show any episode to a friend it would be this one.

Well I only got four done last night pretty late, but it was hot and I wanted some fresh air, it was quite nice walking back along the country roads with just the moonlight.

Right enough Kenneth Williams would have been a good Dr BadVibes. I also though he would have been a pretty good C-3PO type character in a spoof or similar film.
Dr BadVibes was a good mad scientist character in comparison to (more G.I. Joe hate rant) Dr Mindbender from G.I. Joe. He didn’t even dress like a scientist…he looked more like a wrestler.

Well, they could find some other way of probing Dynak, but still, bits of it would definitely make a great climax. Let’s face it, it has a much better climax than either of the first two episodes. The opening adventure needs this one as the third part.

More than I did. I don’t think I was across the doors yesterday. Or today for that matter.

Not seen him, so can’t comment. But yes, Dr BadVibes is a very memorable character. The only other mad scientist character I can think of from that period is Vultureman. I’m sure I’ll kick myself when you mention some others!

A good re-write and edit of the stories in Escape to Mongo, Creation of Monitor and Bits’n’Chip would make a good movie then.

Oddly enough no other mad scientists from 80’s cartoons come to mind. I suppose it depends on who would qualify as a mad scientist. I am thinking along the lines of actual scientists etc not just any character who carries out a mad experiment like Shredder etc. There was one in Rescue Rangers called Professor Nimno(?) but it wasn’t really an action show.
Merged Post:
What about Dr CLAW and his M.A.D. scientists.

Pretty much! You’d have had to adjust Escape From Mongo as I described already anyway, so yes, those three, as the establishing episodes.

I wonder if it might be able to merge the “quests” in “The Lost Jewels Of Tibet” and “The Adoption Of Kshin” to make another movie adventure? The former always seemed like it would have made a great two-parter, and the latter always struck me as similar to it, so . . .

Maybe, I haven’t seen that in ages.

Weird, really, given how appealing the mad scientist character is to cartoons.

I suppose there’s Giro in Duck Tales - yes, he’s one of the good guys, but “mad scientist” could definitely be said to apply to him.

Well, today has been a squandered day. Lots of little things that needed doing without leaving the house, certain phone calls that had to be made just stressed me out - first there was the explanation that the flat is unoccupied, and therefore doesn’t need a TV license, the stupid questions they asked me! Then, I was ordering a new CD player as the one I had gave out on me last week, and the idiot at the other end took the model number down wrong, they emailed me to say they couldn’t find that particular one, and I called them back to say why, and even when I was dictating precisely the model number I was after, I still had to repeat myself far too many times, it’s CMT not MCT! And don’t get me started on the unwanted software the laptop installed and I had to uninstall . . .

Most of the CD players I had ended up breaking but they were not very good makes. I must get round to buying a decent one sometime.
The only times I would listen to music would be when I am on the cross-trainer (cd plays but the skip button doesn’t work anymore) and in the car. I must get a better on for my car as the one in it is pretty old and was in it when I got it. But I have to tax it at the end of the moth so I have to take care of that first.

It’s odd that no other mad scientists come to mind. I think we were tricked as so many villains carried out mad experiments creating monsters and potions for their various plans.

Well, the one that conked out on me last week was a Sony, I’ve had it since july 2008. I got another Sony back in may 2008, that gave out on me about 3-4mths ago. Prior to that, I had had another Sony one from 1999-2007 when it gave out on me.

No other make has served me anything like as well. In 2007-8, I tried out a few other brands, all of them had problems. So I’m sticking with Sony when it comes to CD players.

Considering how much use I get out of CD players, listening to music, comedy and audiobooks, I’d say that 6yrs of that kind of heavy-duty use is pretty good.

Oh - I HAVE just remembered another cartoon mad scientist. Baxter Stockman!

So obvious yet we forgot about him.
Another one came to my mind, Herr Fiend from Gobots…the only sentient transforming robot with a German accent.

Just back from another walk, so 8 miles done today.

All my CD players were not very good makes like Alba and Bush etc. My DVD player is Sony and my Mum and Dad got one the same and both are great and have lasted years, far better than the cheaper models we went through before.

I guess Baxter was obvious to a point, but at the same time he was only really in the very early episodes. After he got turned into a fly, we didn’t see much of him. Shredder, Krang, Rocksteady and Bebop were the main four villains overall.

I still can’t believe that Pat “Krang” Fraley was also the voice of BraveStarr.

I didn’t realise Pat Fraley voiced Krang. He was great as Bravestarr.

Yes it is hard to think of Baxter as a scientist as after several episodes he was turned into the fly and that is how he stayed for the entire series
Personally I liked that Baxter but in the original comics he was a black mad scientist who built robots like the mousers etc. In the 2002 cartoon he matches the comic description and even builds a big robot body/suit. In the 2012 series they have combined all elements of the character. He is black and a mad scientist who builds robots and a robotic battle suit but he does not get turned into the fly until sometime in season 2.

I didn’t know Baxter was black originally! I wonder if the change in the cartoon I know and have mixed feelings about was down to the fact that it was a time of being very PC, and with the main baddie being of oriental origins, they didn’t want to give kids completely the wrong idea about non-white races.

I’m in something of a state of shock right now after hearing about Robin Williams. One of the most unique talents the world has ever known. He will be truly missed. Although I don’t believe in religion or any supernatural beings, I hope he has at last found peace.

It’s possible but I don’t think it would really have mattered as he only appeared in one or two issues of the original darker mirage comics.

In the original comics for instance Leatherhead wasn’t evil yet in the cartoon he was…and Cajun and wore redneck/hillbilly clothes.

Even Krang was changed in the cartoon as in the comics there was a race of them and Utroms and technically they were not that evil.

I am really shocked about Robin Williams also. He was a great actor and comedian. I think tonight I will watch Mrs Doubtfire, and absolute classic, and try and track down One Hour Photo to watch as well, I seen a bit of it on TV one night and it seemed good but I couldn’t be bothered staying up to watch the end of it.
I guess my idea for a Mrs Doubtfire sequel definitely wont get made into a film now.

I never saw those comics; I collected the ones in the early 1990s (or was it even 1989 the run started?).

Don’t remember Cajun, but I do remember Leatherhead, baddie in the cartoon, sort of reluctant goodie in the comics.

Interesting!

I’m probably going to look up some of his standup on youtube.

There’s been quite a few notable celebrity deaths this year, but this is the only one that’s really got me this choked up. Robin Williams was one of those people who could just make people laugh so naturally, so effortlessly. He had the comic timing of Humphrey Lyttelton, the character box of Ronnie Barker or Peter Sellers, and the speed and energy of Leonard Rossiter.

I remember him on Parkinson once, he set a record for the longest anyone had been out for the interview before the first question was asked. Stephen Fry was on the same episode. I’ve still got it recorded somewhere. It was back in 2002, just after Edwina Currie had admitted to . . . John Major. It was getting a few mentions in this show.

I know there is a TMNT Japanese anime series but I only seen bits of it on Youtube, not sure how accurate it is. It just looks like a slightly anime version of the 90’s cartoon.

I must look up the Parkinson interview.
He was always really funny. the first time I seen him was on repeats of Mork & Mindy. My cousin kept calling me Mork for a joke.

In fact it was from his appearance in the Legend of Zelda TV adverts (with His daughter Zelda who is named after the game) made me interested in playing some Zelda games but aside from some poor emulators I never played one on a real Nintendo console.

I think Mork & Mindy was the first thing I saw him in - I do know it’s what brought him to the public eye.

I’m currently watching his standup show “Weapons Of Self Destruction”. It’s from about 5yrs ago, I’ve got it recorded somewhere. I love when he talks about his open-heart surgery, and how to examine it, they had to go up through you know where. His line of “who’d have thought the way to a man’s heart was through there? And of course you women have known that forever . . .”

I recall an interview with him on Graham Norton. I have never seen much of his stand up shows, just the odd clip.

I am STILL watching “Weapons Of Self Destruction” - I have to pause it every 10-15min to get my breath back I am laughing that hard.

I didn’t get chance to watch Mrs Doubtfire, but I will at some point during the week or weekend.

Well, I eventually finished “Weapons Of Self Destruction” - hilarious. Well worth watching on youtube.
